Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com position called Swalm's Panacea, applied to me, requesting me to state what 1 know about the intrndhetion of his medicioe into the Alms House—and 1 consider it a duty tn comply with his requ st. Being President of the Hoard of Mana gers of the Alms House in the year 18*0, Mr. Swaim expressed to m« a wish to un dertake tire cure of some persons then in the house, whe-e cases were given up as in curable by vhe medical gentlemen, that he was confident of curing by his medicine, those cases, nnd would undertake some of the most desperate—and would require no other compensation than the satisfaction to be derived from tire service rendered. I promised to consult the other mana gers, and did sox hut I found that some of the medical gentlemen in the house had labored to prejudice them, as some of them attempted to prepossess mo againit what they .denominated quackery. Some of tho managers felt inclined tn the trial, consid ering that as they were oases abandoned by, the medical men which were, to lie opera ted upon, no harm ait least would be done, and If cure was practicable, the opportuni ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed a reluctance to take any responsibility upon them; by which I understood that they did not like to put themselves in opposition to the physicians. Others opposed it alto gether. 1 therefore offered and took upon myself whatever responsibility there was in the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I would accqnipatiy him, ahd did so. Tho first case selected was that of a woman, whoso appearance was horrible, and whose condition was so deplorable that the pa tients in the .same room wished to have her removed, 'and the evidence of my own sen ses justified their ooniplnint. She was a woman of about 30 or 82 years of age, her right eye was already uestroyed,. the left' eye protruded more than half an inch out of the socket, the flesh of the left chock was one complete ulcer, "the flesh of the nose had disappeared and left the nostrils two naked holes, the upper lip on the left side was destroyed, and -the -teeth and guini bare, aud the whole face, as it appeared to me, in a state of dissolution; her appetite had left her—she represented a living skel eton frightful tp beheld. -Mr. Swaim said he could cure tier; he could not restore the lost eye, nor restore the nose, lint he could restore tlie loft eye and the month. He undertook tho ease, anil I frequent ly attended him in his visits to. the poor woman, and she was cured—and I..have frequently seen Her since, going .about her ordinary business with the alacrity i)su.al to a person of that age; the deformity of course remained ; bitt all that remained besides appeared healthful I have ■ eon ■ finedjjnyself to-this case, upon avhicli l Was impossible to be mistaken, ami for-' uornn to introduce any oilier'circumstan ces than ivliat belong immediately to it. „ WM. THIS yalulilrle Anli-dysen- MgPI® leric und Warm Medicine has been used for these seven SKjl years past, and its virtues ere 1 universally acknowledged by all who liavo tried it, to Ire far superior to any other medicine over employed for most diseases children are subject to.. It is perfectly safe, and no child w ill refuse to take it. It seldom fails curing Dysentery, Summer Complaint, Onlln or Cholera- .Morbus, either in grown persons trv children aird it gives appetite to almost all debilita ted persons. Worms frequently infest civil dren, aggravate their other diseases, nnd are the chi-f, cause of most fmro, boipel complaints, anil chronic and nervous diseas es, incident in .hildltourt. which nre so nu merous ami frequently fatal. It is much regretted that jfftpst vermifuges now In use nre injurious, and thousands of children are sraept rtff. or are rendered feeble, pale nnd einancinted through the first srago of life —which leads on to pulmonary complaints &c, &c. Sic. .Worms being, -especial)' apt to infest pnrsnns of debilitated digestive organs and emaciated cbt&tjlutions, much mischief is often done by the oroinary worm medi cines, Which generally consist of tho strong est purgatives, mercurials, titters, narco tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of Ibis kind rnay destroy worms, hut they do hjlitate the stomach, and often materially injure the general heallh. SavAist's Vuit siifuoe has the peculiar advantage of do straying and removing worms from the bowels without the weakening consequeu- eea of the stronger purgatives, die.—and it has, moreover, a decided tendency to give vigor Until to the stomach aiul bowels rod organs of digestion—thereby relieving the general system from many trouhlosdute complaints, ft Is hv litis means that so many grown persons have been relieved, hi/its use, of different complaints—..suppo sing themselves tn law in a decline, &c. Sic This medicine will relieve bowel com plaints or dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit- intf, sickness, pain-or weakness in the sto mach nr bowels, toss of appetite, either in children or grown persons, in a f tp hours t audit seldom fails curing chills ai*i> pf.- vkr or ft,ver ague. No family ought, or ever-will be without it, afle; a trial. Worms are capable qf,,producing great disturbtinses in tue system. Not only do they aggravate ordinary diseases when they are present, but they also give rise to a great variety of very alnrmiiig anomalous affections. The whole train nfspasmodic & cnnvulsivedisenses may proceed from the irritation Of worms in the alimentary canal. Gholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus, pa ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well ns a variety of other nervous and convulsive affections, are not tinfrequently the aiimier tliate effectsof this cause. Besides these diseases, warms hnve also been known lo produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains,'dys entery, remitting fever, dropsy of the brain, chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. &c. <&c. Among the symptoms which indicate tlje prrpsence of worms, the following ate tire most common and striking:—A pale, leaden-colpured, arid occasionally flushed counlenanecVia bluish streak under the eyes, these are 'dnll and heavy, the pupils are dilated and much contracte.d, tho low er eyelids and uffper lip swell, especially' during tire night while sleeping! great' itching in the nostrils, which causes the. patient to pick Iris nose; foul breath; dis turbed sleep; during which the patient grinds his teeth, is apt to scream out ami start up suddenly ,ns if frightened: tingling iii Die ears; giddiness; interrupted speech; palpitation of tire heart a dry spasmodic cough; irregular and depraved appetite, 1 being sometimes entirely-suppressed, and at others exceedingly voracious; abdomen swelled and hard; looseness of tire bowels: costiveness; unnatural, slimy,or fool stools; pains in thw bowels; w asting of the .flesh; convulsions; (its; palsy; and finally ilektli.
