The following certlfioate gives the his
lory of the introduction of rbe Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alins Hobse Infirmary.
Those who read It, will bo convinced that'
th<-' proprietor has never feared the invest!

minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinoes the prejudices of the facultv, tliai.
thoso who were so anxious originally ya

would neglect 110 opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swahn, proprietor nfa medical com
position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state -what I know'
about the Introduction of his medicine into
the Alms House—and 1 consider it a duty
In comply with his request.
Being President of tho Board of Mana
gers of the Alms House in the'ye-ar 1820,
Mr. Swnim expressed in me a wish to un
dertake the curh^af some person:, then in,
the house, wltoie cases wera-given Upas in-,
curable by the nfedical cnntleiuen, that he-
was confident of curinl; by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the ntost desperate—andiyould require no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to be.derived from the service rendered. -
I promised to consult t|ie other mana:
gers, and did so; hot I found that, some of
tho medical gentlemen in the house had
labored t6 prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to prepossess me against whait
they .denominated quackery. Somepof the
managers T-qlt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases' abandoned by
tjie medical men which, were to ho opera
ted upon, uo barm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty oltght to.be afforded, imt they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others Opposed It alto
gether. . I therefore offored and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swnim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first -case selected was that of a womart,
whose appearance wnthonib'e, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in the same room wished tb have her
removed, and the evidence of my own sen-
ses justified their complaint. She was a
woman of abont.SO or 82 years of age, her
right eye wns already I.estroyed,. the left
eye piotruded more than half an inch out
of the socket, the, fleah of the left cheek was
one. complete ulcer, the flesh of the riosa"
had disappeared aftd left'the nostrils two
naked hoies. -the uppet lip an the left side
was destroyed, and -.rlto teeth and gums
Bare, andlhe whole, face, as it appeared to
me, in a state Of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skid-,
eton frightful to Behold. Mr. Swaim said,
he could cure her; he could not restore the
jost eye, nor restore the nose. but he could
restorethe left eye andlhe moirth. ... ‘
Ho undertook the opse, and I frequent-
ly attended, him in his visits to the poor
woman, and she Wait cured—and I have
frequently seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the alacrity usual
to ’ a person of that age: the deformity of
course remained ; hut all that remained
