The following certificate gives the his
tory of the introduction pf tla: Fe'naceainto'
the Philadelphia .Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, svlll bo convinced that
th proprietor has never feared the investi
gation of physicians, or-endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret, ft nltn
evinces tile prejudices of tile faculty, that
thoso who were so anxious originally to“
exclude the tnediciqe from this ,ins!i'tution,
would neglect pa opportunity of expelling
it, after it bad been introduced.
FIlGM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City at Phi-
-■ladelphia. ,
Mr. Swaiirt, proprietor nf te medical com
position called Swaiin'a Panacea, applied
to me, requesting rim to state what i know
about the introduction of his medicine into'
the Alms House—and I consjder ft a duty
to comply with his requ st.
Being President of the Bnnrd of Mnna .
gers of the Alms House in the year. 18*9,
Mr. Swaim expressed t.s nto's wish to un
dertake the cure of. loffie persons then in
the house, whose cases were given up as in
curable by tile medical gentlemen; that lie
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most.desperate—and would require no
other, compensation than the satisfaction
to be derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, arid.djd so t hnt-I found that somenf
the medical gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice them. as some of them
attempted to prepossess me against what
they denominated quackery. Some of tho
managers' felt inclined to the trial, ennsid-
cring that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to be opera
ted upon, uo harm at least would be done,
apd if cure eras practicable, the opportuni
ty plight to be afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance tQtake any responsibility upon
themby which I understood that .they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. . I iherefore offered and,;ook upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
tho case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case stledted was that of a woman,
whoso appearance was horrible, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in tlie samo room wished to have her
removed, and tho cvidenco of my o,vn sen
ses justified their ooinpiaint. Siie was a
woman of about 30 or 32 years of age. tier
right eye was already .-esiroyed, the left
eye piotrtuled more than half an iilcll but
of the socket, the flosh of the left choek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of the nose
had disappeared and left the nostrils two
naked holes, tite uppei lip on the left side
was destroyed, and the teeth and glims
baro, anil the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a stale of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr. Swaim said
he could cure her; ho could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the tfbse, but he could
restoro the left eye and the month.
He*nwWtook thb case, and I frequent
ly attended him in his visits to the poor
woman, and she was curcd-—.uid I have
frequently seen her since, going about her
ordinary . husiness with the alacrity usual,
to a person of that age: the dulormity of
course remained ; but all that remained
besides appeared healthful I Irnvo con
fined myself to this case, upon

arc the chief cause of most fetiers, bowel
complaints, and chronic and nervous disras

merous arid frequently fatal. At is much
regretted that most vermifuges pow in use
are injurious, and thousands ufohildren are

&C. &C. &C. '
Worms being expociaffy ifpt to infest
persons nf debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often done by the ordinary worm modi'
ciifes, which generally consist of the strong,
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, liarCo-
tics, or ’spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy worms, but they de
bilitate the stomach, and often materially
injure the goneral health.' StVAlw’s Ver.

siroylng and removipg .wofims from the
bowels withorit the weakening consequen

it has, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigrir both to the stoinaoh and howeiq,
and orgarys of digestion—thereby relloying 1
the general system from mkriv troublesome
complaints. It is hy this means that so
many grown persons have bpert relieved,
by its use, of different cojriplaiiits—suppo

This Medicine will relieve bowel com

children or grown ptrsons, in a fw hours;
and it seldom fails curing chills ami te*

Worms aro tapahto of producing great
disturb macs in tne system. Not only do
they aggravate ordinary diseases when they
are present, but they also give rise to a
great variety of very'alarming anomalous
affections. The whole train nf spasmodic Ac
convulsive diseases may’proceed from the

Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy J lelanns. pa

variety of other nervous and convulsive
affections, are not unfrequently the imme

diseases, worms have also been known to
produce pleuriticjand rheumatic pains,dys
entery, remitting fever, dropsy of the brain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. *Atc.

Among the, symptoms which indicate
the presence Of worms, tho following are
the most common and striking; -A pale,

countenance)-A bluish streak under the
eyes, these are dull and heavy, the pupils
are dilated and much contracted, the low.
er eyelids and upper lip swell, especially
during the night wliilo sleeping; great
itching in the nostrils, which causes the
patient to pick his nose; foul breath; dis

in the ears; giddiness; interrupfed speech;
palpitation of the heart a dry spasmodic
