FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq-
One nf the Aldermen,of the City of Phi

Mr. Swaiin, proprietor of a medical com

to me, requesting me to state what I knotv-
about'the introduction Of his medicine into
the Alms House—and I consider it t duty-

BWnS President of the Hontd of Mana

Mr. Swaiin ex|Kossed in me a wish to un*
dertako tbe cure of sumo persons, then in
the hpusi, whose cases were given i/gjvt in
curable by the nredical eentlemen, that he
was .confident of cnrtng by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would, require no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to bo derived from, the service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana

the medioxt .gentlemen In the house had
labored to prejudice them, ns stupe of them
-attempted to prepossess me against .what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid

a reluctance to trike any raaponsibility upon

myself whatever responsibility there was in
.the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accon)pany him, and did so. The
first case selected was. that of a woman
whose appearance was horrib’e, and whose
condition wns so deplorable that the pa-'
tiems in the aame room tvjshed tu have her
removed, and the evidence of my o.vnsen*.
ses justified their complaint. She was a
woman of about 30'or S2.years0f age, her
right eye wa* already (destroyed,,the left

of tilt socket, the flesh of the left cheek was-

was destroyed, and the teeth and gum»
bare, and the whole face, es it appenrefftb

he could cure her t he could not restore the.
