SWAIM. September. 1828. The following certificate elves the his tory ofthe introduction of tke Panacea intn- the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary. Those who read it, -will Ire convinced that the proprietor has never feared the investi gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad minister the medicine in secret. It also evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that those who were so anxions originally to exclude the medicine from this institution, would neglect no opportunity of expelling it, after it had been introduced. FROM WILLIAM DUANE. Esq. One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi- ladeiphia. Mr. Swaim, proprietor of n medical com position called Swaltn's Panacea, applied to me, requesting me to state wltat I know about the introduction of his medicine into _the Alms House—and I consider it a duty to comply with his requ st. Being President of the Board of Mnna gers of tho Alms Home in tho year IB20; Mr. Swaim expressed to me a wish to un dertake the cure of seine persons then in tho house, whore cases were given up as in curable by the medical aentleujen, that he was confident of curing by iris medicine those eases, and would undertake some of tllP most desperate—and would require no other compensation than the satisfaction' to be derived from the service rendered. I premisod to consult the other mana gers, add did so; hut I found that some of. tho medical gentlemen in the house had labored to prejudice them, .as some of them attempted to prepossess ine against what they denominated quackery. Some ofthe managers felt inclined to the trial, consid ering that as they were cirses abandoned by the medical men which were to be opera ted upon, no harm at least would be done, and if cure was practicable, the opportuni ty ought to be af. r orcloil, but they expressed a reluctance totake any responsibility npon- them; by wbiuh I understood that they did not like td-put themselves in opposition to the physicians. Others opposed it alto gether. I therefore offered and took upon myself whatever responsibility there was in the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I would accompany him, and did so. Tlie first case seledted was that of a woman, whose appearance was horrib’e, and whose condition was so deplorable that the pa tients in the same room wished to have her removed, and tlie ovldence of my own sen ses justified their oomplaint. She was a woman of about 30 or 32 years of age, her right eye was already uestroyed, the left, eye protruded more than half an inoh om of the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was one complete ulcer, the flesh of the nose had disappeared and left tlie nostrils two naked holes, the uppei. lip on tlie left side was destroyed, and the teeth and gums i l vi auiu uaii uillE'l V iwn vjr CHARLES A. Articles of lids kind may destioy t7orm>,.but thev de- bilitnto the'stomach, and often materially injure the goneral health. Swaim's Vkr- MtruoE has the peculiar advantage of de stroying and removing worms from .the bowels without the weakening consequen ces of the sltonger purgatives, Ac and it has, moreover, Jr decided tendency to' give vigor both th the.stomach aiid.howeit. and orgnns of digestion—thereby relieving' the general system from many troublesome complaints. It is by this means thht so many grown persons have been relieved, by its use, of different complaints—suppo sing themselves to be In a decline, he. he This medicine will relieve bowel com plaints or dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit ing. sickness, pain or weakness in the sto- tnach nr bowels, loss of appetite, either in children or grown persons, in a fsu> hours and it seldom flits curing ciiills awd fe ver or FEVER AOCE.
