The folbming neidflcate gives the his
tory of th" introduction of t' e Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary
Those who read it, will be convinced tint
til proprietor lias never.feared the investi
gation of physicians, or'endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in socret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those "ho were so anxious origin illy to
exclude the medicine frojn this institution,
mild neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been inlnwluend.
FROM WILLIAM DIJANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
-Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a me.dical coin-
position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state what I know
about tbp introduction of his medicine into
the Alms'House—and I consider it a duty
in comply with Ills reqii st.
Being President of the Hoard of Main
gers of ihe Alms House in tin* vear 1820.'
Mr. Swaim expressed to pie a wish to un
dertake the cure of some persons then in
the house, whom cases were given up as in?,
curable bv tin. medical entiemen, that lie
was confident of curing bv bis medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the iriost desperate—and would require no
other compensation thaiv the satisfaction
to be derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so ; but I found that some or
the medical gentle nen in the house had
lahored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to. prepossess me against snyhat
they denominated quackery- Some of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, conVul-
ej-ing that as they were oases abandoned by.
the medical men which were to be opera
teef upon, no barm aMeast wnuld be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. . I therefore offered and'took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was iu
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case scletftod was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrible, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in the same room wished4o have her
removed.-and the evidence of my own son
des justified their oomplaint. • She was a
woman of about 30 or 32 years of age. her
right eye was already uestvoyed, the left
eye piomided more than half an inch out
of the socket, the flesh of the left chock was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of .the nose
had disappeared and left the nosirils two
naked holes, thc*iippei lip on tlio loft side
was destroyed, and the leeili and gums
bare, and tlio whole face, as il appeared to
/ne, in a state of dissoliitjou; her appetite
dad left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr. Swaim said
he could euro Iter.; ho could not restore.tlie
lost eye, nor restore tlio nose, but lie could
restore the left eye and the nioifth.
He undertook the case, and [ frequent
ly attended him in his visits to tlio poor,
woman, and sho was. cured—and I have,
frequently seen.liorTince, going about her
ordinary . business with the alacrity usual,
to a person of that ago; the deformity of
course reoiainod ; but all that- remained
-besides appeared healthful I have con
fined myself to this case, upon which .
was impossible to bo mistaken, and for
borne to Introduce any oilier circumstan
ces than what belong immediately to it.
„ WM. DUANE.
Philadelphia, March 11th 1828. /
CERTIFICATE OF DR. EDWIN A,
ALT EE,
Member ofthe Philadelphia Medical Socie
ty.
The case detailed in the above ceitifi-
cale came under my observation, and I be
lieve Alderman Duane's statement to be
strict I v correct. Mr. Swann showed in
two other cases neatly similar, which were
cured by his Panacea, after every oilier re
medy had failed.
Averse gs. I am to quackery, I hope ov
er to be proMsrved from unjust and selfish
prejudice ; and, therefore, do not hesitate
lo give i^v name, in confirmation ofthe ef
ficacy and safety of Mr. Swaim’s medi
cine. *

THIS valuable Anti-dyscn-
Irric and'hr,orin Medicine Inis
been used for these seven
years past, and its virtues are
univer>ally acknowledged by
all who have tiied it, to be fur superior to
any other medicine over employed for
most diseases children are subject to. It is
perfectly jufe, and no child will refuse to
take it. It scl'fcmi fails curing Dysentery,
Summer l^oiiiplaiilt, Colic dr Clioleia
Morbus, either in grown persons or cliildicn
and it gives appetite to almost all debilita
ted persons. Worms frequently infest cliil
dren, aggravate their oilier diseases, and
are tlie chi *f cause of most fevers, bowel
complaints, and chronic and nervous diseas
es, incident to childhood, win Ii ace so nu
merous and frequently fatal. It is much
regretted that most vermifuges non in use
are injurious, and thousands of children are
swept off, or are'rondnred feeble, pale and
eniiiiicriated through the fu r t stage of life
.—which leads on to pulmonary complaints
&c. Arc. &c.
Worms being especn’ly apt to Infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often done hy tlio ordinary worm nndi-
ciues, which generally consist of the strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narco
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy worms, hut they de
bilitate the stomach, and often inateii.illy
injure the general health. Swaim’s Ver
mifuge has the peculiar advantage of do
stroving mid removing worms from the
bowels without tlie weakening consequen
ces of the stronger purgatives, &c —and
it has, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor both to the stomach and bowels
md organs of digestion—-thereby relieving
the general svstem from many tiotiblesomo
complaints. It h bv this means that so
many grown persons have been relieved
by its use, of different complaints—suppo-
ing themselves to lie in a decline, &c. &c
This medicine will relieve boutd com
plaints or dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit-
n<r, sickness, pain or weakness in the sto
mach or bowels, toss of appetite, t ither in
children or (frown persons, inafw hours;
md it seldom flits curing chills an » fe

Worms are capable of producing great
listurl)'macs in the system. Not duly do.
• liev aggravate ordinary'iiseasbs »lien they
ire present, but tlioy also give rise to a
gre't variety of very‘alarming anomalous
affections. The whole train ofspasmtidic &
convulsive diseases inay proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety of other nervous and convulsive
affections, are not unfrequently the inime-
liate effects of this cause. Besides these
diseases, .worms have also been known to
produce pleuritic find rheumatic pains,dys
entery, remitting fever, dropsy of the brain,
dironicand spasmodic cough, &c. &c.
kSM.
Among the symptoms which indicate
the presence of worms, the fbllowing are
the «(iQst couiflion apd striking:-—A pale,

are dilated and much contracted, the low

start up suddenly as.if frightened: tingling
