•The following certific ite dves the his
tory of th** introduction of tl.c Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Iriflrmarv
Those who read'it; will bo convinc'd lint
th proprietor lias never feared the investi
gation of physicians, or endeavored to id*
minister the medicine in secret. It also
e.vinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those « ho were so anxious origin illy to
exclude tho medicine from this institution,
would ueglect.no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DIJVNR, Esq*;
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swiiini, proprietor of a medical com
position called S vaim’s Pa mice 1, applied
to me, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of his medicine into
the Alins House—and I consider it a duty
Vo comply with his reqiV si.
Iloing President “of the Board of IMana
gers of the Alms House in the year 11120.
Mr. Swaim expressed »o me a wish to un
dertake the cure of some persons then in
tho house, who-ve cases Were given up as*in
curable hv the medical gentlemen, that lie
was confident of curing' hy hjs medicine
-those cases, and would ontTertaki* some of
the most desperate—and would require no
other compensation than the s itisfaction
to he-dt»rfved from tho service rendered;
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so ; hut j found, that shine of
the medical gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to prepossess me against what
(hoy denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that ns they were cases abandoned by
the medical men .which were to he c^era
ted upon, lio ii.irnr a’tjenst would be done,
and if cure was prjit ticable, the*6pportuni-
ty ought to be alforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
then; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
tho physicians, fathers opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case selected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrib’e, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients iu the same room wished'to have her
removed, and the evidence of my own sen
ses justified their oomplaint. $he waa, a
woman of about 30, or 82 years of age. her
right eye was already destroyed, the led
eve protruded more than half an inch out
of thceocket; the flesh of the left cheek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of the uose
had disappeared and left the i ostrils. two
naked holes, the uppei lip on thedeft side
was destroyed, and tire teeth and gums
Inrei and the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a state of dissolution ; her appetite
had left lieu—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr. Swaim said
he could cure Jierj hn could not restoreIne
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but he could
restore the left eye and tjie mouth.
Ho undertook the case, and.l frequent
ly attended him in his visits to the poor
woman, and she was cured—and I -liave
frequently seen.lieV since, going nboUt her
ordinary bu^nbss• witn the alacrity usual
to 1 <x porson of that age; the deformity of
course reuiained- \ hut all that reulamed
besides appeared heiiltli.fu^' I have con*
fined myself to this cftse. ugoa which I
was impossihlo to ho mistakon, and for
borne to introduce liny other circumstan
ces than what belong immediately to it.

ALTER,
Member of the Philadelphia Medical Sock-
ty.
The case detailed in tlio above certifi
cate came under m^ observation, and I be
lieve Alderman Du mo’s statement to be
strtctlv correct. Mr. Hwnim showed im*
two other cases nearly similar, which were
cured by his Panacea, after every other re
medy had failed* '
Averse as l am th quackery, l hope ev-
