It it much regretted that most vermifuges now in use are Injurious, and thuusaudsof children are swept off, or are rendered feeble, pale ami cm,undated through the first stage of life —which leads on to pulmonary complaints See. Sec. See. Worms being especially apt to infest persons of debilitated digestive organs and emaciated constitutions, much miscluof is often done,-by the ordinary worm medi cines, which generally ponsist of the strong est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, natali ties, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of this kind may destroy worms, but they de bilitate tlie stomach, and often materially injuro the goneral health. Swaim’s Vrr- MfrooE has tlie peculiar advantage of de stroying and removing worms Loin the bowels without the weakening consequen ces Of the stronger pKrgativ0t Sec.—and it has, moreover, ,a decided tendency to give vigor bntli to the stomach tslxl bowels gent. It also evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that thoso who were so anxious originnlly to exclude the medicine from this institution, would neglect no opportunity of expelling it, after it had been introduced. FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq. One of the Aldermen of the City of Phi ladelphia. Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied to me, requesting mo to state what I know about the introduction of Ins medicine into the Alms Home—and 1 consider it a duty lo comply -withjiis requ -si. Being President of the Hoard of Mena S ets of the Alms House in-'the year II18|I. ir. Swaim expressed to ni# n wish to un dertake (tie cure of nitae persons then in the house, whose cases were given up as ins curable by tile .medical gentlemen, that he -vas-confident of curing, by hi. medicine those cases, and would undertake some of the most desperate—and would require no other -compensation -than the satisfaction to j>e derived from the service rendered. I promised to consult the other mnna gers, and did so; hot i found that stone of tho medical gentlemen in tlie house had labored to prejudice them, as-some of them attempted to -prepossess ine against what they denominated quackery. Some of the managers felt inclined to the trial, ennsid- ecing that as they wore cases abandoned by the medical men wliich ware to bh opera ted upon, ua lurra at least would be dene, and if cure was practicable, tlie opportuni ty ought to be afiorded, but they expressed a reluctance to take any responsibility upon them; by which I understood 4hat they did not like lo put themselves iq opposition to tlie physicians. Others opposed it alto gether. I therefore offered qud took upon myself whatever responsibility there was in the base, and notified Mr. Swaim that I would accompany him, and did so. The first ease selected was -that of a woman, whose appearance was horrib’e, and whose condition was so deplorable that the .pa tients in the same room wished to have her removed, and the evidence df my own sen ses justified their oomplaint. She w#« t woman of about 90 or 38 years of age, her right eye was already uestroyed, the left eye protruded more .than hair an inch out of the sookot, the flesh of the left cheek was one complete uloer, lire flesh of the nose had disappeared aud left tlie nostrils two naked holes, the uppet lip on the loft side was destroyed, and -t|ie teelh and gums bare, end the whole face,-as.it appeared to me, in.a Mato of dissolution; her appetite had left her—sho represented a living skel eton frightful to behold. Mr, Swaim said he could ouro hej; he could not restore the lost eye, ndf restore tjie nose, but he could restore the left eye-and the mouthi , .He undertook the case,. and 1 frequent Iy attended liim in his visits to the poor woman* and shb was cured—and I-.have frequently seen her since, going about..- her ordinary business with the alacrity, usual to a person of that ago i thedeformity. .Of beside; appeared heal fined myself to this ei il I have con 10, upon wliich I The Yirtiies aiid Use OF THE CORDIAL Cephalic Snuff, lVhich, by long experience, has been found an effectual Remedy for most Disorders ■ofHEAD, especially the OoeiWon IlcaaX*^ which it hardlu ever fails giv ing immediate e&!, ‘nnd ay frequent use prevents its return. gT admirably opens and purge. the'ixiBd, M. strengthens tb# nerves, revives the spi-' rits, and has a most gtateful aromatic smell. - It relatives Prpwsiacsi, Sleepiness, Gid diness, and Vapours, relieves dimness of the eye* is excellent in curing recent deaf-, ness, and has been of great service In Hys teric und Paralytic complaints, end in re storing the memory when impaired by dis orders of the head.
