The following certificate gives Iho his
tory of the introduction of the Panacea into
the Philadelphia'Alms House Infirmary.
Those who road it, dill bo convinced tlyat
the proprietor Inis never feared the investi
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad"
minister the medicine in secaet.' It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious originally to
exclude the modioine' front this institution,
would neglect no opportunity'of spelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM,DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the dtp oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr, Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaim's Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to slate what I know
about the introduction of Ins medicine into
the Alms House—-and I consider it a duty
lo comply with his reqii si'.
lielng President of the Hoard of Mnna
gers of tile Alms House in the year 1020,
Mr. Swaini expressed In me a wisli to un
dertake the emo nf sntno person* then in
I he house 1 , whose cases were given up as in
curable iiv tile medical cumieoien, that lie
was confident of curing by his medicine
lliosn cases, and would undertake some ill'
the most desperate—aiid would require no
othpr compensation than tlie satisfaction
to bo derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult ilia olliei mana
gers, h ii-1 did so; but I found ihat Milne of
tlie medical gentlemen in tjie bouse bail
labored to prejudice ilusnj, a* south of them
attempted to ptTpo.sse3* toe against what
they denominated quackery- Some of tlie
managers fell inclined ttMlie trial, consid
ering tli.it as tlnSy were eases abandoned iiy
the lucdicnl men which were to lie opera
led upon.'no barm at least would budone,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought til be afforded, but they expressed
a reliic't.ince to take any responsibility upon
them ; by which I understood tiiat they did
not like lo put tljeimelvt-s in opposition to
tlio physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. 1 therefore offered and took llpo.i
myself whatever responsibility tliore was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swuint tiiat I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case stlected was that of a woman,,
-whose ^peatupce wasiiorrib’e.'und whose
condition was So deplorable that the pa
tients in the same room wished to have her
removed, and the eyidonce of my olvo sen
ses justified their oomplaiqt.' She was a
woman of about 30 or 32 years of age. her
right eye was alrody oestroyed, tho left
eye protruded more than half an inch out
of tlie socket, tile flesh of the left cheek was
ono complete ulcer, tlie flesh of the nose
had'disappeared and left the nostrils two
nuked holes, tlie up'pei lip on tlie left side
was destroyed,' qnd the leelh mid gums
Imre, and lire wIioIp face, as jt appeared to
me, ina state of dissolution; her appetite
had i ff her—she represented a living skcl-
oton frightful to behold. Mr-Srvaim said
lie could euro her; lie could not restore tlio
lost eye, nor restore the nose, hut lie oould
restore the.loft eye and the mouth.
He jmdevtook the case, and I frequent
ly attended'him in. his visits to" the' poor
woman, and.sho wa’s cured—mid ;-I have
frequently seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the alacrity usual
to a porsou of that age: tlie, deformity of
course remained ; but all that remained
besides appeared healthful I have con
fined myself to this case, upon which I
was impassible to ha mistaken, and for
borne to introduce any oilier circumsUi,-
ces than what belong immediately to it.
