FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City of Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaiiti's PanaGca, applied
to mo, requesting ine to state what [ know
aboul the introduction of Ifts medicine into
the Alms House—and I consider it a duty
to comply with his regu-at.
Being President of the Bourd of Mann
« ors of tlie Alms House in tho year 1820,
Ir. Swaim expressed to me a wish to un
dertake the cure of some persons then in
the house, whose eases were given up as in
curable by tlie medical gentlemen, that he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of,
tlio most desperate—and would require no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to be derived from llie service .rendered.
< I promised.to considt 'tlie other.mana
gers, and did so; but Lfuund that some of
Alie medical gentlemen in the hopse had'
labored to prejudice them, ns some of them
attempted to .prepossess me against what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
nianagers felt inolinod'to the uial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical inen which Were to he opera '
ted upon, uo harm at least would'be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be nffordad, bqt they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; bywhicliT understood that-they did
not like , to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alloy
getlier. -I therefore offered-and took upon
myself wiiatever/esponsibility tliete was in-
tile-case, and notified Mr. 9waim : -that I
would accompany him, and (lid so. Tlie
first case selected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrible, and whose
condition' was so deplorable that jhe pa
tients in tlie same room wished to have her
removed, and the evidence of my own sen^
ses juslified thcir-oomplaint. She was.a
woiiiimnf about 80 or 92 years of age. her
right eye was alredy destroyed, the left
eye protruded'more than half an inch out
of the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was,
one complete ulcer, the flesh of'the nose
had (disappeared an'd left tlie nostrils two
naked holes, qfie.llppei flip on thelaft side
was destroyed, .and -the teeth and, gumx
bare, and.llio whole face,-as it appeared to
me, in n stalo of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—slie:represe,ned ; n living skel
eton frightful to-behold., Mr.Svvaim said

The case doiniied in the above certifi
cate came under my observation, and I be
lieve Alderman Duane's statement to ‘be
strictly correct. Mr. Swaim showed me
two other cases nearly similar, which were
cured by Ids Panacea, after every otlie’r re
medy had failed.
.Averse as I am to quackery, I hope ev
er to be preserved from unjust ami selfish
prejudice ; and, therefore, do not hesitate
to give inv name, in confirmation of tlio ef
