FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of .the Aldermen of the City of Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaimi proprietor of a medical Com
position called Swaittfs Pariicca, applied
to me, requesting me to state what I kop.w
about the introduction of Ins merltnine into
the Alms House—and 1 consider if a duty
lo comply with ids request.
Being President of the Brmrd of Mana
« ers of' the Alms House in the year 1820
Ir. Swaiin expressed to me d wish to rtn-
rlertako the cure, of some persons then in
the house, whose cases were given up as in
curable by file medical gentlemen, that be
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, end would undertake some of
tlie most desperate—and would reqtiiro no
other compensation than the satisfaction
lo be derived rrohi the service tendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so ; hut I.found tint same of.
the medical gentlonien In the house had
labored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to prepossess mo against what
they denominated quackery- Some of the
managers felt inclined tn the trial; consid
ering that as they wero caaas -abandoned by
the medical men which were to be opera
fed upon, n® harm at least would be dope
lind if cure was practicable, -the dppdrtuni-
ty ought to he afforded, but they expressed
a rcluctauce to tajre any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not ilka to put themselves-in opposition to
the physicians. Others iSpposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swnim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case selected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was Horrible, and whose
condition wns so deplorable-that the pa-
tiebts in tlie same room wished to have her
removed, and the hvidenq# of my o,vn sen
ses justified their Complaint. She was n
woman of about 80 dr .82 yenrs of <ige, her
right eye was olredy destroyed, the left
eye protruded more than half an inch out-
of the socket, tlie flesh of the left cheek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of ibe.nose
had disappeared and left the ft*™?
naked holes, tho upper .lip onflte left side
was destroyed, and llie teeth imd gum*
bare. and the'whole fpce, as Jt appeared to
me, lifa' state of dis3ofution; her appetite

he could cure her; he eoUld.not restore t he
