WM. SWAIM. • September, 1028. The following certificate gives the his tory of the introduction of the Panacea into tiie Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary. Those who read it, will bo convinced that the proprietor has never feared the invest'^ gallon of physicians, or endeavored to ad minister the medicino in secret. It also evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that tlioso who were so anxious originally to exclude the medicine from this institution, would neglect no opportunity of expelling it, after it had been introduced. FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq. One of the Aldermen of the City of Phi• ladel/ihia. Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com position called Swann’s Panacea, applied to me, requesting me to state what 1 know about the introduction of his medicine into tho Alms liouso-.and 1 consider it a djity to comply .with Iris reqn -st. Being President of the Board of Mann gel's of’ tho Alms House in the year 1820, Mr. Swaim expressed In pic a wish-to un dertake tiie cure of somo persons thep in the house, whose cases were given up as tn- curabloby the medical gentlemen, that he. was confident of curing by his medicine tlioso cases, ami would undertake some of the most desperate—and would require no other compensation than the satisfaction to be derived from tho service rendered. 1 promised to consult the other mana gerj, gml did so; hut I found that some of tho medical gentlemen in the house had labored to prejudice them, as some of them attempted to prepossess mo against wlint they denominated quackery. Sornc of the managers (th inclined to the trial, consid ering that as they were cases abandoned by the medical men which were to lie opera ted upon, uo harm at least would be done, was inippssible to bo mistakcn r and for-, borne to introduce shy olbor circumstan ce’ than What belong immediately to it. „ WM.DUANEf, Philadelphia, March lltl) 1828, CERTIFICATE OF"DR. Averse as l am to qnaekery, I hope oy er to lie preserved from unjust and selfish prejudice ; and, therefore, do not hesitato to give my name, in confirmation of tho ef- storing the memory when impaired by djs- ficacy and safety of Mr, Hwajm's ipcdi- orders of the head, cine. ... Others Opposed it alto gether. I therefore offered and took upon myself whatever responsiliility there was in. the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I' would accompany him, and did so. The first case selected was that of a woman whoso appearance was horrible, and whose condition was so deplorable that the pa- lients in tiie sameropm wished to have her removed, and the ovjdcnce of my own .sen ses justified their complaint. She wns : woman of abqut SO or 82 years of age, her right eye way airedy destroyed, tho left eye.piptruded.more than half an in oil put of tiie socket,.the flesh of the left cheek was one complete, ulcer, the flesh ef the nose had disappeared and left die nostrils two naked holes, tho uppei lip on the left side was il,strayed, and the teeth and gums bare, and the .whole face, as it appeared to me,,in a state of dissolution; her appetite had left her—:sho represented a livipg skel eton frightful, to behold, Mr.Swqim said he could cure her; he could not restore the. lost eye, nor restore the nose, but he could restore theleft oye and the mouth. Worms frequently infest chil (Iren, aggravate their other diseases, and are tho chi f cause of most fivers, hncrl complaints, and chronic anti nervous discus es, incident to childhood, which ore so nil morons and frequently fatal. It is much regretted (lint most vermifuges no'< in use are injtui'UK, and thousands of children are suept off. or are rendered feeblo. pale and tunanciated through tho first stage of life —wltirli leads on to pulmonary complaints be. &c. &c. Woufn being especially apt to Infes't persons «f debilitated digestive organs and mnacinted constitutions, much mischief is often dope by the ordinary worm modi cities, which generally consist of tiie strong est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narco tics, or spirits nf turpentine. Articles nf this kind tnay destroy worms, but they de bilitate the stomach, and often materially injure the general health. Swat si’s Ver- mivuos has the peculiar advantage of de stroying and removing worms from the bowels without the weakening consequen ces of the stronger purgatives, Arc and it has, moreover, a decided tondency to give vigor both to the stomach and bowels and orgnnsaf digestion—thereby relieving the general system from many troublesome complaints. It is by this meaui that so many grown persons have been relieved, by its use, of different complaints—snppo sing themselves to be in a decline, Arc. Are This medicine will relieve bowel com• plaints cr dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit- ng, richness, pain or weakness in the sto mach or bowels, loss of appetite, either in children or grown persons, in a few hours, and it seldom fails curing ciui.ls and fe ver or revjeh ague. No family ought, or.ever will bc trithmtf it, after a trial. Worms are capahle of producing great disturbanoes in tno system, Not only du they aggravate ordinary diseases when they are present, but they also give rise to a great variety of very alarming anomalous affectious.
