September, 1818.
The following certificate gives the his
tory of the introduction of tire Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will he convinced that
the proprietor has never feared the investi*
gatiun of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine from this institution,
would neglect uo opportunity of axpelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Ph
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietorof a medical com
position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to slate what t know
about the introduction of his medicine into
tire Alms House—and 1 consider it a duty
to comply with his reqm s(.
Being President of the Board of Mana
gers of the Alms House in the year 1820,
Mr. Swaim expressed to me a wisll to un
dertake the cure of some persons then in
tho house, whose cases were given up as in
curable by the medical gentlemen, that Ire
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to be derived from the service rendered. .
I promised to consult the other inana
gers, and did so; but I found that sume of
tire medical gontlemen' in tho house had
labored to prejudice.thcm, as some of them
attempted to preposhe3i me against what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to-the trial, consid-
oring that as they were cases abandoned by
tiro medical men .which were to lie opera
ted upon, no harm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportune
ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to taka any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
tire physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offorctf'aud took upon
myself.whatever responsibility there was in
tho case, and notified Mr. Swaim that
would accompnny him, and did so. Tho
first case selected was that of a woman,
whoso appearance was horriido, and whose
condition was so doploralrle that the pr
lients in tho siimo room wished to have hi
removed, and the evidence of myown sen
scs justified thoir oomplaint. ’•She i .wns I
woman of uhont 30 or 82 years of age, her
right oye was alredy ..estroyCd, tire loft
oye protruded more than half an inch out
tif the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh' of the nose
lvrd disappeared aud left-the nostrils two
naked holes, the upper lip on the left side
rvus destroyed, and tho tooth and gums
hare, r«d the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a stale of dissolution; her appetite
had left tier—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Sivitiin said
Ire could cure her; lie'could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but Ire could
rostore theloft eye und tire mouth.
He undertook the case, arid I frequent'
|y attended him in his visits to the poor rvo
man, and she was cured—anil I have ifre-
qtiently seen Iter since, going about her
ordinary business with tho olaority usual
to a person of that age; the deformity of
course remained ; but . all that reniained
