The following certificate' gives the his
tory of the introduction of the Panacea iuto
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary
Those rvho read it, will lie convinced tha
the proprietor has never feared the invest!*
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces tlie prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious, originally to
exclude the medicine from this institution,
would neglect no opportunity of pxpeUing
it, after it had hceu introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE. Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City of Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. S--vai,m, proprietor of a ntedical.com-
position called Swaim's Panacea, applied
to tno, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of his inodtoino into
tlie Alms House—qnd 1 consider it a duly
to comply with his requ st.
Being President of the Board nf Maun
gets of rite Alms House in the year 1820,
Mr. Swaim expressed to mo a wish to un
dertake the cure of tunic persons then in
the house, whose cases were given Bp as in
curable hy rlto medical gentlemen, Hint he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to he derived from the service rendered.
1 promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so; hut I found that some nf
tho medical gentlemen in tho house had
labored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to preptfsse3s me against what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to (lie. trial, consid
ering that as they um o cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to he opera
ted upon, no harm at least would lie done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them i by which I understood tliat they did
not like to put tjtemseivei in opposition to
the physicians. Olllors opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and tool; upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
tha. case, and notified Mr. Swaim that 1
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case selected was that of a woman,
whoso appearance was horrib'e, and whose
condition was so deplorable that tho pa
tients in the same room wished to have her
removed, and the evidence of my own sen
ses justified their complaint. Slio was a
woman of about 30 or 82 years of age, her
right eye was alredy Destroyed, tho left
eye protruded more than half nn inch out
of the socket, the flesh of tho left cheek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of the nose
trad disappeared and left the nostrils two
naked holes, the tippet lip on tho left side
was. destroyed, and the teeth and gums
bare, and the wliolp face, as it appeared to
tne, in. a stale of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a.llving skel
eton frightful to behold.. Mr.Swalm said
he could cure her; ho could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but he could
restore theloft eye and the mouth. 1
He undertook the case, anti I .frequent
ly attended him In Ids visits to the pour Wo
men, and she was cured—and I have fte-
nuently seen her stnCe, going about her
ordinary-business with the alacrity usual
to a person of that age; the defmmlty of
course remained ; but all that, remained
besides appeared -healthful, I have -eon-
fined myself to this case, ujion which 1
