FROM WTLLI AM DUANE. Esq.
One of the Alilermen of the City of Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaiin, proprietor of a medical.com-
position called Swalm’s Panacea, applied
to fife, requesting me to strife what 1 know
alHiu, the introduction of his medicine into
the Alms House-rand 1 consider it • duty
4o comply with his request.
Being President of the' Hoard of Mai
gers of the Alois House in the year 18
Mr. . waiin expressed’lo me a wish to un
dertake the cure of sumo : pttsons then in
trio house, whose eases wefe given rip as in
curable by the medical gentlemen, that he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cues, and would undertake some of
the moit despernte-r-nnd would require.no
other compensation titan the satisfaction
to be (thrived from tho service rendered.
I promised to consult, the other mana
gers, and did-so; hut I found that some of
the medical gentlemen In the house had.
labored to prejudiceTnem, as some of them
attempted to prepossess'me against what
thoy denominated quackery. Some of tho
managers felt inclined to the tVlal, consid
ering that as they, were cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to be opera
ted upon, no harm at least would .bo done,
and if euro was practicable, tlio opportuni
ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood they they did
not like to put tHeinyelves in opposition to
the physicians. Olliers opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was In
tlio case,; and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, trnd did so. Tlio
first ease selected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was liorrib'e, end whose
condition was so deplorable that tlte- pa-
tients in tlie same room wished to have her
removed, and the evidence of my own .sen
ses justified tlreir oomphunt. She was a
woman of about 30 or 32 years of agb, her
right oye was alrody uestroyod, tlio left
eye'ptotrttdcd more titan half an inclt out
of tile socket, the flush of tile left cheek was
ene completo ulcer, tlie flesh of the noso
hid disappeared ami. left tlie nostrils two
nailed holes, the uppet lip on tlie left aide
was destroyed, and tiie teeth and. gums
bure, and life whole face, os it eppourod to
me, in a stato of dissolution; Iter appetite
iiad left licr—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swaim said
jie could Clirfl liet*; he could not restore the
lost eye»- nor restore the ndso, biit he could
restore theleft eye and the friouth*
He undertook tlie oaso.jand I frequent
ly attended him in hii visits to the poor wo
man, and she was cured—and 1 have fre
quently seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the nlccnty^usual

regretted that mast vermifuges now in use
are injurious, and thousands nf children are
swept off, or are rendered feeble, pale itnd
emanoiated through the first stage, of life
—which leads on to puliuonaly complaints
tie, ice. Sic.
Worms being especially-apt to infest
persons nf debilitated digestive organs end
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often done by tho ordinary worm medi
cines, which generally consist of the strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bittors, narco
tics, or spirit* of turpentine. Articles nf
this kind limy destroy worms, but they de-
biiilato tiie stomach, and often materially
injure the-general health. Swaiji’s Ver-
mikuoe lias the peculiar advnutago of dc
stmyiriB urd^removing worms from the
bowels without the weakening Cunscqiien-
oes of the stronger purgatives. Ac.—and
it lias, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor both to the stomaelfeiid bowel*
and organs of digestion—thereby relieving
the general system from many troublesome
complaints. It is by this means that an
many grown po«oui have, been relieved.
by its use, of different complaints—stippo-
silte themselves to be in a decline, Ate. &c.
. This medicine will relieve bowel com
plaints or dysentery; bilious cholic,- vomit
ing, sickness, pain or wedlmess in the sto
mach or bowels, loss. of appifltl. either In
children or grown persons, in a Jew hours;
and it seldom fails curing chills ard fe-
van ob feveb ague. No family ought,
or ever wiU be withoif it, after a trial.
Worms are capable of producing great
disturbanaes in the system. Not only do'
they aggravate ordinary diseases whop they
are present, but they also givi rise, to a
great variety of very alarming anomalous
affections. The whole train nf spasmodic &
convulsive diseases may proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus, pa-
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety of other nervous and convulsive
affeolioni, are not unfrcquently the imme
diate effects of tills cause Besides these
diseases, worms have also been known to
produce pleuritic and rheumatic pnins.dys-
entery, remitting fevcr.dronsy of the brain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. fio.
Si o.
Among Ihe symptoms which indicate
tlie presenoe of worms, Ihe following are
the most common and striking:—A’ pale,
ieadeu-riolotircd, and occasionally flushed
countenance;'a bluish - streak under the
eyes, theso are dull and"heavy, the pupils
are dilated and much contracted, the low
