'attempted to prepossess me against what
they,denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined tn tho trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical men wfitch were to he opera
ted upon, uo barm at least would be done,
and if cure-ivas practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be afforded; but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
tliem't by which I understood that they did
nut like to put them-olkei in opposition to
tlie physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myseif-whntever responsibility tliete was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did :0b. The
first case selected was that of a woman,
svhose a'ppearfincd was horrib’c, and whose
condition .was so deplorable that the pa
tients in the lamd room wished to have her
removed;- and the evidence of my own sen
ses justified their complaint. She ivns a
woman of about 30 or 82 years of ago. Iter
right eye was alredy cestroyed, the left
eye protruded-more than half an inch out
of the socket, the flesh of the left check-was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of tlie nose
had disappeared and left Jhe nostrils two
naked holes, the tippet lip on the left side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
and | bare, and the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a statu of 'dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to. behold. MnSwaim said
he could cure her; he could not restore the
lost rye, nor restore the nose, hut he could
restore theleft eye and the month.
Ife undertook the case, and I frequent
ly attended him in liis visits to the poor wo
