WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1906.
Anyhow, Teddy has made the beef
packers sit up and take notice.
The stork has no more respoct for
the wishes of royalty than for the
''' hopes anil aspirations of humbler folk,
and haB a tantalizing habit of bring
ing daughters to ruling famlllos over
whose doors appear signs reading:
"Wirated—Sons Only. 1 ’
The little monoplios are being
rounded up together with the big ones,
aiif| Atlanta Is getting In the game by
beginning to camp on the trail of her
terminal company and cab company,
two local trusts that are clmrgod with
employing methods which might well
be envied by the King of Standard
OU.
seif,
£:? t
The Atlanta Georgian well says that
the "civilized world which throws up
Its hands In horror ovor the floiidtsh
crime of Manuel Morales, the bomb-
thrower of Spain, mny well turn with
a greater loathing and aversion toward
‘th^se magnates of the beef trust' In
America, who are willing to sentter
their diseased and horrible rood
through the homes of their fellow
countrymen."
Peoplo who have rend the Nell-
Reynolds report now know enough
about the conditions that obtain tn the
big packing houses and the unsanitary
methods employed to forever turn
them against ronned meats of all
kinds and the various kinds of sau
sages that are turned out of the pack
ing houses as well. And nbuut tho
best way for the public to bring the
packing houses and the beef trust to
terms Is to quit eating their products.
Congressman Ellehbe, of South par-
| ollna,' Introduced In the House of Rep
resentatives yesterday a resolution
■ charging that the cotton acreage re
port of the Department of Agriculture
Issued on Monday giving an estimate
of 28,686,000 acres, exceeds the amount
. actually planted, nnd is not warranted
from the returns received by the De-
", pnrtment from Its corps of corre
spondents. The resolution directs the
... Secretary of Agriculture to furnish the
„-J House at once the tabulated sheets
i . showing the estimates of acreage
- made by the seven classes of corre-
> \ spondenrs, namely, the Held agents,
the state agents, the country corre-
' spondents, the township correspond
ents, the glnners, the special cone-
' spondents nnd the Individual farmers.
THE JOINT DEBATE.
Only yesterday, noting the fact that
the two Atlanta candidates for gov-
orno’r, Messrs. Hoke Smith and Clark
Howell, were'to engage In a Joint de
bate tn Atlanta next Friday night, we
remarked that we didn’t envy Atlanta
and the Democracy of Fulton County,
as the Joint debate would be a rallying
occasion for the partisans of the two
men, each at the head of a faction In
what has become a feud. And before
The Herald carrying' that paragraph
had gone to presB there came a tele
graphic dispatch from our Atlanta cor
respondent Announcing two other Joint
debates between Messrs. Smith and
Howell—and one of these scheduled to
take place at Albanyl
And bq thlp Atlanta political and
rival newspaper feud Is to be brought
to Albany.
All right; lot It come. We suppose
the Democracy of Dougherty County
can stand It If that of Fulton and
Floyd counties can. As for Albany, It
Is more accessible from all points In
Southwest Georgia than any other city
In this part of the state, and we are,
porhaps, as well prepared to house,
feed, water and liquor a multitude of
political enthusiasts as any town In
the country, and—well, our hospitality
1s established and proverbial.
Republicans of the Ninth Missouri
district meet at Warrenton today to
name a candidate to make the race
against Congressman Champ Clark
this fall.
WAR ON R008EVELT.
President Roosevelt appears to have
aroused the animosity of some of tho
big trusts and captains of finance.
According to a Chicago dispatch,
“the political destruction of Roosevelt
nnd nil who acknowledged alliance
with him In his light on the packers Is
the plnn of tho millionaire proprietors
of America’s meat industry.
“As soon ns J. Ogden Armour re
turns from Europe the heads of big
concerns will meet nnd arrange a plan
of action.
"It contemplates the’ enlistment of
all trusts nnd corporations at whom
admlnlstratlvo guns have been aimed,
with the powerful organization of mil
lions InvoBted In great industries.
“Captains of finance will endeavor
to capture tho machinery by which
one of the two parties may bo most
effectively utilized.
"According to a leading lawyer who
waB engaged In defense of tho pack
ers In , their recent trial before Judge
HumphrqJL tho great capitalists .real
ize that Roosevelt Is no longer to be
trusted to represent their Interests.
.Lately he has shown tendencies that
are dangerously socialistic. They aver
that he has demonstrated the perilous-
neBB of electing a man of radical mind
to the presidency.”
To cancel one’s debts by commit
ting sulcldo Is worse than bankruptcy.
POLITICS AND POLITICIANS.
Gen. Horace Portor, recently am
bassador to France, Is said to be the
choice of Chairman B. B. Odell for the
Republican candidate for governor of
Now York.
O. H, Truman, whom the Democrats
of tho Seventh Kansas district have
nominated for congress, is un<ordnlned
minister of the Christian clKtrch. He
was ordained In 1874 and lias had
charges In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and
Nebraska.
Colorado will bo the next state to
furnish a hot light among millionaires
for a seat in tho United States senate.
Senator Patterson, whoso term will ex
pire next March, has announced thnt
ho will not run again. The million
aires who will probably enter the race
for Senator Patterson’s seat are Thos.
E. Walsh, the mining king: Dave Mof-
fntt, the railroad magnate, nnd Mr.
Guggenheim, the head of the Ameri
can Smelting & Refining Co. The out
look Is thnt there will be lively times
at the next session of the Colorado
legislature.
' Mr. Ellerbe states that he has dlreqt
and positive Information that this cot
ton report has been manipulated to
V the, disadvantage of the South and al
leges that no one of the three travel
ing agents “was in two states upon
which they passed."
The success of the “insurgent" Re
publican faction In South Dakota will
mean that Representative Eben W.
Martin,-'the author of the house reso
lution under which the beef trust was
investigated by the commissioner of
corporations, and Representative Clias,
H. Bnrke, who was recently mnde the
chairman or the executive committee
of the Republican congress campaign
committee, will be retired to prlvnto
life.
The Oregon election this week is
the last state election to be held until-
September, in which month state elec
tions will bo held In Arkansas, Ver
mont and Maine.
Indiana Democrats are to assemble
in Indianapolis tomorrow to name can
didates for the state offices to be filled
at the fall election.
