On last Sunday morning Mr. Fayette Varnell had reached the foot of the hill at Judge Maddox’s mill when one Bide ot the shafts dropped from the axle at his horses heels, which g-»ve him a great fright, and at onee started at full speed. Mr. Varnell in attempting to jump from the buggy, fell and broke some of the bones in his hip joint. Our able poung physician, Dr. Walt. Annerson, met Dr Div¬ ings, of Dalton, at Mr. Varnell's on Monday and dressed the wounds. We hope he may soon recover^ We learn that Dolph Hays, a veteran “moonshiner,” was cap¬ tured in Dalton Monday evening together with mules, wagons and whisky. The violat ors of Saw may expect sooner or later to be over taken in their misdoing. There are many men claiming to be good citizens who are violating this law. The campmeeting at Casey was attended on Sunday by an immense crowd, estimated at about 1700. The morning being fair and pleas¬ ant, all who had previously ar¬ ranged themselves made their way to the campground expecting the sunshine to continue through the entire day, but, as doubtless many rem; mber, about eleven o’clock the watery Leavens began io turn loosse theii pent up con¬ tents on the assembled multitude below, and white dresses with the starch knocked out, and wry faces could be seen in every direction. The showers fiaally passed off for a time and the people quickly start ed for their homes. Found Dead. We learn with regret of the death of Mr. Smith Hulsey, of the Ball Ground, who was found dead about two hundred yards from his fat her's reside nee on last Saturday, A jury was summoned which after the proper investigation gave the following verdict: We the jury summoned to bold an inquest over the body of Smith Hulsey deceased, after obtaining all the testimony at hand, on said case, find that said deceased came to his death from some cause unknown to the jury, and further find that there was no evidences# or marks ot violence discovered as connected with the death ot said deceased. Mr. Hul¬ sey was a young man in the prime of life and esteemed by all who knew him. Here is one example showing how suddenly our sho>t mission on earth may be ended, and onr spirits required at the hand of Goa. We extend our sym patliy to the bereaved parents and relatives. Death of Col- Johnson We were pained to Uarn of the tragical death of Col. Wash Joan son, of Dalton. On last Wednes day he told his wife to prepare din ner that he wanted to go to Chatta¬ nooga, which she a( once began to do. Mr. Johnson went up stairs, came down, and stepped out, and when dinner was ready Mts. John. son could not find the Col., so she supposed that he being in a hurry had gone. Nothing was beard fiom him till on Saturday his wite sdp^raphed to Chattanooga and . Atlanta concerning him, but no i information could be obtained, which soon caused great alarm. He was found on Sunday morning only a few steps from his own res¬ idence, his body was badly decom¬ posed that a close examination was almost impossible, a shot was din discovered entering the throat and passing out near the top of his head. A pistol was lying near by with two chambers discharged, but one chamber seemed to have been discharged for some fimr. Col.
