We '•all attention to the card of W M Haig & Co., in this issue, nd vertiaing his fine horse. If yon want to keep up with the Times, call in to see ns— it. will just, cost you one dollar per year. The measles is still in our midst and is using -Tames McGhee in a rough and unpleasant manner this week. The farmers of Murray are about through their crops and are lejoic ing over the pleasant growing showers. John W Hill and Miss Alice Bur¬ nette were married at. this place on last Sunday. Col. H Heartsill Esq officiating. Miss Julia Williams, one of Dal¬ ton's brilliant young ladies is vis¬ iting Miss Lena Wofford at Capt. W C Tilton‘8. We leam that all the houses at Cohultah Springs, are now oc¬ cupied, and that 1 hire is a demand for a number more. Herbert Anderson, one of our bright young men from the country, is boarding in town and reading law under Col. Starr. We havn‘t heard of any one who went to the hanging on last Friday, but we can find hundreds who went over that day on business. Miss Nannie Duglass, who lived near Cohuttah Spr ngs, died on last Fnday. We sympathize with the borveved parents and family. M R Chastain says, that he has the finest, colt in the county, and since we have seen it., we agree with him until some che shows a better one. Notice in this issue, the card con¬ taining Dodge’s COCO which will cure your chickens ot the ehol. era and lteeD those that havn’t got it from taking it John Holland, formerly of this county, but now ot Johnson county Texas, is visiting at his fathers near town. John has been in the Lone Star State thirteen years and this is his first visit home. As his mother is a great lover of her chil¬ dren, we know she rejoiced on his retorn. We would like to see Spring Place wake up from her dead leth¬ argy on the school question. We have the material to support, a large school; but no house suitable for a school to be taught in- Now is it posible that our people are going to let (heir children grow up in ignor¬ ance, simply for the want ot a lit¬ tle energy, and interest in this, an important matter. Three months ago people would have been sup prised 4 Rev. E M Stan I on had told them that he was going to got up money and build a new M. E. church at this nlace; but regardless of how impossible it may have looked to some, ho h'sa secured a subscrip¬ tion of four jbr five hundred dollars and the wort, on the church will begin soon. Now in the name of justice, to your .children and in the interest that you have for your town and comnVunify take some steps forward in'this cause; now while crops bid fair is the time; let every citizen in town, begin at once to agila'e this question, and each one, feel that he ha'e an interest, and ere the distant, future we will hear the Spring Place college bell, calling the children of the village ipto the houue of knowledge. Oak Hill ^enuterv, is in a bad condition. Will some one please suggest, when it will suit the peo¬ ple to have a meeting and look aft¬ er this, an important duty. Why Holman Didn't Hang Since the Governor respited Hol¬ man for 30 days, renewed applies tions were made by petitions, by letters, by personal interviews and lastly by Hollman's poor, heart¬ broken mother for a commutation of the then, doomed man's sentense to imprisonment foi life, and pre¬ senting new features and develop¬ ing certain important facts in Hol¬ man's favor, that were latent to his Excellency on the 8th of J une, when he respited him, which, made it important, with the lights before him, and in behalf of Holman who was then strngling between life and death, to review the evidence in the case again. And on examination the following lifesaving features in Holman's favor were discovered: First, that Lizzie Holcombe, a de¬ based woman and her sister Carrie Holcombe, an eleven year old girl, also reported unvirtuous wore the only witnesses whose evidence could be considered direct testimony as to the guilt of Holman, and secondly, that these two witnesses, since the conviction of Holman and the refus¬ al of a new trial in his case by the Superior court have sworn beiore the grand jury of Whitfield county that their testimony in the Holman case was false and that they were not present at the killing of Matilda Gudger, and thirdly, that all the evidence in the case besides these two witnesses, was purely circum¬ stantial. Hence after due consid¬ eration the Governor commuted Holman's sentense. While ihe a bove decision did not meet with the approbation of all, we believe that Governor Gordon did what he thought was right in the premises. As we know nothing of the evi¬ dence in Holman’s case, we are not prepared to say anything in the vindication of either, the Governor or Holman. Remember the Powder Maga¬ zine in Dalton.
