WATERSPOUTS.
The Tornadoes and Whirlwinds
of the Sea.
Theory Concerning the Forma¬
tion of these Phenomena.
Such an unusually large number of
waterspouts has been reported off this
coast and in the western part of the
north Atlantic ocean during the last two
months, says the Hew York Commer¬
cial Advertiser, that the government
hydiographic servico has taken advan¬
tage of tho data furnished by ship cap¬
tains to compile somo interesting infor¬
mation about them. Several theories
are supported as tho result of these com¬
pilations. Up to withia a comparative¬
ly few yean little was scientifically
known regarding them marine phe¬
nomena. Sometimes those waterspouts
were observed to move along tho ocean
with immenso rapidity and at other
times to remain almost stationary. They
have been shattered by a gun shot, and
at other times they have disappeared of
.themselves.
The general theory regarding tho
character and formation of waterspouts,
which these latest reports bear out, is
that (hey aro simply special cases of
tornadoes and whirlwinds, but on a
much smaller scale. These are princi¬
ples underlying all these phenomenas:
A layer of warm, moist air at tho sur¬
face of the ocoan happens to have above
it a layer of cooler, drier air; this con¬
dition of things it one of unstable
equilibrium, and sooner or later the
warm, light air at the surfaco rises
through tho cooler and heavier air
above. This process sometimes takes
place gradually over large arears, but at
other times it is more local, and there
seems to bo formed in tho upper layer a
break or opening through which the air
of the lower layer begins to drain’up¬
ward, as through a funnel. Under
favorable conditions, that is when the
differences of temperaturo and moist
uro and tho supply of warm air
at tho surface aro great, this ac¬
tion becomes intense, and this in¬
tensity is still further increased by the
condensation of the rising air and the
liberation of the latent heat, which
drives it upward. As this surface air
rushes in and escapes through the open¬
ing tlins formed in tho upper layer, it
takes up a rotary or whirling motion,
the velocity of which increases toward
tho centre or axis of tho funnel, and a
suction or partial vacuum is created, as
is indicated by the low reading of the
bnrometcr at tho centre of a cyclono or
whirlwind. In tho case of n great cy¬
clone or hurricano, tho direction of ro¬
tation is determined by the revolution
of tho earth about its axis, and the well
known law of storms is founded on tho
fact that this rotation is, in tho northern
hemisphere, invariably against, and in
tho southern hemisphere with, the hands
of a watch as you look at it when
laid down with the face up. In the
ease of tornadoes and waterspouts this
direction of rotation is not so uniform,
although the same law holds good in
most cases. When a whirlwind is thus
formed over the ocean water is often
drawn up the centre of tho whirl for
somo distance, owing to the suction
created, and at tho same time the mois.
ture of the air is condensed as it rises,
so that tho name “waterspout’’ is very
applicable. When a spout is forming,
its upper portion is often visible first,
scorning to grow dowaward from tho
clouds. By observing carefully with a
telescope, however, it has been seen
that tho motion in tho column itself is
upward, although tho moiituro in tho
air which is rising is condensed lower
end lower down, thus rendering th#
whirl vlsiblo lower down continually
and making it appear to bo actually
descending.
That portion of tho north Atlantic
from tho northern coast of Cuba to the
fortieth parallel, and from tho Atlan¬
tic coast of the United States to the
Bermudas, is pre-eminently a region
where waterspouts are liable to occur
owing largely to tho warm, moist air
which hangs over the Gulf stream and
the cool, dry air brought over it by the
northwesterly winds from off the coast.

There is nothing startling about .this fact

The Proper Way to Brink Milk.
“What did you drink?’’ askod the
doctor.
“Nothing that could have made mo
sick, I am sure,” replied the pationt.
“Only a glass of milk.’’
“I thought so. Now let mo give you
a word of advice. Many persons com¬
plain that they cannot drink milk with¬
out being distressed by it. Tho most
common reason why milk is not well
borne is duo to the fact that peffplo
generally drink milk too quickly. If a
glass of it is swallowed hastily it enters
the stomach and then forms in one
solid, curdled mass, difficult of diges¬
tion. If. on the other hand, the same
quantity is sipped, and three minutes,
at least, is occupied in drinking it,
then, on reaching the stomach, it is
so divided that when coagulat¬
ed as it must always be
by the gastric juice while digestion is
going on, instead of being in one hard,
condonsed masq upon the outside of
which only the digestive fluids can act,
it is more in the form of a sponge, and
in and out of the entire bulk the gas¬
tric juice can freely play and perform
its function. Milk can be rendered
more digestible, and, for many, of a
moro agreeable taste, if prepared by
slowly adding a few drops of dilute
hydrochloric acid to it, drop by drop,
while stirring it at the same time. By
this means the ctlrd is broken up, and
it is a more favorable state to be acted
upon by tho digestive fluids. You fol¬
low my advice and you will have no
more attacks of sickness such as the
ono you aro troubled with today. Two
dollafs, please. Good day.” —[New

The puerile effort on the the part of any ooo
to deny the inestimable value of ioedoc in mod¬
em medicin e may deceive and mislead the igno.
rant, but is truly ridiculous to physicians and
other students of medical science. It is a base
characteristic of quaokery to promulgate such
falsity, and with fin an ci al gain an only object, is
indeed disreputable. In the cure of the worst
form of Blood Poison, Iodide of Potash is indis¬
pensable—a fact acknowledged by all intelligent
physicians—combined (as in the case of B,
B. B.) with certain vegetable ingredients every
fault of the drug is removed, and it does not dis¬
order the stomach or dog the kidneys.
The following testimonial comes unsolicited
Kennesaw, Ga., Sept. 11,1887.
B. B. B. Company—Ms Deas Sib : We had
#11 despaired of my wife ever recovering. Her
mouth was one solid ulcer, and for two months
or more her body was broken out with sores un¬
til she lost a beautiful head of hair, also eye¬
lashes and eye-brows; in fact, she seemed to be
a complete wreck Now comes the great secret'
which I want all the world to know: That three*
bottles of Blood Balm medicine has done the 1
work which would sound incredible to any one
who did not know it to be so. To-day my wife is
perfectly healthy, and has a three-months’ old
babe, also perfectly healthy.
Very respectfully, H. L. Cassidy,
B. Be B.
