    A Care for Toothache.
I is not at all Uncommon to have tooth
e with perfectly sound teeth, or in
th that have been lecently filled.
explaining the cause for this I
would simply recommend a very conven
ient little application, which you can
readily prepare yourself and keep on
hand. Take a piece of chamois skin, or
of fine, closely woven flannel, and soak
it thoroughly in a good extract of Jamaica
ginger, or what is better still, in tincture
of capsicum, which you can obtain from
any druggist. Let this dry, and put it
away until the time of need. To use it
in the case of the toothache I have meu
tioaed, with a pair of scissors cut a small
piece off and plnce it between the gum
and the lip, directly over the root of the
offending tooth. This will act as a coun¬
ter irritant, and its effect is really mar¬
velous.—Laury McHenry in New York

Are there pot scores of people who
cannot see themselves as others see
them? They have bad blood, pim¬
ples, blotches, eruptions, and other kin¬

and the skin restored to “lily white¬

Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery,
were given a fair trial.
It cures all humors, from the ordi¬

REMOVING GREASE FROM CLOTH.
There are various ways of removing
grease from cloth, and each way has
its adherents, but as there are different
kinds of grease aud different dyes, a
never-failing cleanser has yet to be
discovered. Sometimes the following
preparation works like magic: Put
•ome salts of wormwood in a cup and
leave it in a damp place until it has be¬
come a liquid. Drop a couple of drops
of this on the grease spot, then wash
immediately with luke-warm water
and then with cold water. Oil of
tartar can be used instead of salts of
wormwood.— [New York World.
DOUBLE BOILER FOR SWEET POTATOES.
Sweet potatoes, unless roasted, re¬
quire skillful cooking, as to be at their
best they should bo dry and mealy
when served. If they are cooked so
that the water can touch them they are
apt to be watery, and it is difficult to
expel the water from them. One good
way when boiling them is to select
them as nearly the same size as possible;
wash them and put them into cold
water without any salt. Boil until a
fork will easily pierce the largest one;
then take them up and lay in the oven
to dry a few moments. Kemove the
skins before sending to the table. But
i better way is to cook them in
'■double boiler,” aud then the 'water
cannot touch them. A very small
double boiler may be gotten for 50
cents, and a larger one for 80 cents or
$1.
Make you own double boilers, how¬
ever, if you cannot afford a better one,
by setting a tin pail that has a close
cover into a kettle of boiling water, or
a tin pail inside of a larger one.
Wash your sweet potatoes—without
peeling--wipe them off that no water
may cling to them, cut them in half if
they are large, put them in a smaller
pail, which must be dry inside, and
push the cover down closely so that no
water or steam may get in. .Set this
pail into a larger one two-thirds full
of boiling water, l’ut a cover over
the large puil and the potatoes will
come out of the small pail when done
dry and mealy. This arrangement,
or the double boiler, is nice for cook¬
ing rice, custards, etc.— [New York
News.
VARIOUS USES OF KEROSENE.
There tire many ways in which
kerosene may be utilized iu house¬
work. The followiii"' have been col¬
lated by Good Housekeeping': Marks
oil tables caused by hot dishes may be
removed by kerosene rubbed in well
with a soft cloth, finishing with a little
cologne water, rubbed dry with an¬
other cloth. When giving the final
polish to stoves, before putting away
for the summer, mix the blacking with
a little kerosene instead of water, to
prevent rust. Tarnished paint may
be cleaned by rubbing with a cloth
wet with kerosene. Black walnut,
or any wood finished in oil, may be
kept bright by polishing with kero

Pour a teaspoouful of kerosene into
each quart of boiled starch, for a gloss.
This will also prevent irons sticking
to thiu goods. Kerosene will brighten

a little keroseaic. This will make them
much clearer than if soap isu8“d;

A Milk Bath.
A milk bath means a beautiful com¬
plexion and luxury. If purses would
permit the extravagance the city milkman
■would not. Water clear is just as bene¬
ficial as water combined with a little
milk.
Here is a mock milk bath that is al¬
most as beneficial to the skin as pure
milk. Make up a dozen or more bags of
cheese cloth about a foot square. Fill
them with oatmeal and pure white cas
tile soap, shaved fine—two-thirds oatmeal
and one-third soap. Add a little borax
and some powdered orris root and tie up
the bags securely. One bag in twelve
gallons of water makes a delightfully re¬
Chicago freshing bath and the skin like velvet.—
Herald.
Borax water is excellent for sponging
cither silk or wool goods that are not
soiled enough to need washing. Cashmere
or any wool goods may be washed with a
little borax in 'he water and the color not
be injured. They should not be rubbed
on the board, but only between the hands
and hung on the line to dry without
wringing. If treated in this way ami dry
