TQOTM-ACJIEx
Petersburg, Va. 9 4- June, 1836.
H. D. M'lntosh, Esq., Henry County, Ga.
Dear Sir;— l am this morning in receipt of
your favoug of the 18ih instant, requesting to
have some of the Balm sent out to your State as
•oon as possible. Such is the pressing demand
in every section, that I have, as yet, not been
able to supply the orders that have been some
time on hand. I have had an order from Au
gusta, Georgia, and Savannah, since last win
ter, and only last week sent one grece to each
plaeo. Dr. E. R. Calhoun, of South Carolina,
has contracted for that Stale and Geergia, and
I have shipped to him near five thousand bot
ties, all that I could spare. As soon as I cut, 1
will send him more; but when,l cannot say, as
I must divide it as well as I enn, until I can sup
ply each State fully. 1 willdtunysclf the pleas
ure of requesting Dr. Cali>o.u> o.tablteb-esi a
gency at your office as soon as other engage
meats wtlLallow. I have been putting up near
ly two thousand per day, and now find myself
in want of about fifty thousand for immediate
use, and have not fifteen bottles, but what are
packed up for shipment. From the present de
mand, I should not be surprised, if it were to
take five.hundred thousand bottles a year to sup
ply the demand.
Yours respectfully, &c.
H. B. MONTAGUE.
ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATES.
ALBEMAKi.it, April, 1886.
Dear Sir:— Wo suppose you like good news,
particularly when you arc mostly interested.
We have but two bottles left of the bwx of Balm
you sent us. You can draw nt sight for $ ,
which we believe will be the amount, after de
ducting commission and expenses We will
thank you to send to our friends, Messrs. • •
es Richmond, by first conveyance, a double box,
which you will put at your wholesale price, for
which you can also draw or. us. it has failed
in two instances in this neighborhood, but one of
the persons that wo have seen, thinks it -was
(with him) rheumatism, as he had the tooth
drawn, and the pain still continued.
Several persons have used it, with defective
gums, or scurvy, and are so much delighted with
it, that we are charged to keep a supply. The
ladies are using it with the tooth-brush, and say
that it is the boat thing for the teeth and gums
they have ever uwfl. We arc glafi, for the sake
of the sufferers, as well as on your account,
that this remedy is not orjy not es Northern or
igin, (from whence all the patent nostrums
come.) hut is a Virginia preparation, aud by a
Virginian. Nor does it detract from its efficacy,
on account of the place of its preparation, (Pe
tersburg.) once styled by Mr. Jefferson, the
“ cockade of America.” It seems to us, that
all you now have to do, is to see to it, that yen
keep a supply sufficient for the demand—for if
it sells elsewhere a. it has dono here, there will
be no end to the demand. Several merchants
of my acquaintance, mean to send for a box. -
Allow usttp congratulate you, and the public,
the discovery and use of the only remedy (ex
•n-pt drawing) for tooth-ache, that has yet been
discovered.
Respectfully yours,
R. R. &T. T. G.

Dear Sir: I bought a bottle of your Balm
from Messrs , in Petersburg, in Februa-
ry, chiefly because I had a servant who hsd
suffered most cxcrutiatingly for some months.
We had tried all the remedies which were in
our reach ; an attempt was made to extract the
tooth, but broke it off. I caused the Balm to
be used after warming it in a cup—this was re
peated with a secund spoonful, when she vas
entirely relieved. The next night she came for
more, saying that a tooth on the other side
ached, and also requested some for her husband
who, she said, hid been suffering with the same
disease for some weeks. I cheerfully gave
uni the next day <>ninquiry found that both were
rsliaved. One of iny neighbors of high respec
tability sent to me for some for his wife. ]
have this day sven him, and he assures me that
it afforded immediate relief, and there has been
no return; before, she suffered almost constant
ly, and could not bear to lot cold water touch
the tooth, an I f.»r two nights previous to the
application, she had not been able to sleep
scarcely nt all. Now she has no inconvenience
from cold water or any thing else that conies in
contact with the tooth. The night before last'
he used some with one of his own men, with the
same success, and says if he could have had this
remo ly fifteen years ago, and known its effica
cy. he would willingly have given a hundred dol
hrs for it. I have written in haste, giving a
phm swtement of facts.

WHEREAS it has been binding on me for

it doing no good, lam done with it. But, ho it
known to the citizens of the 102 d district G.
M. that I shall take a shorter way to pat a stop to
it. Tho law is very pointed, that auy whito per
son offending agaiust the provisions of this act, be
i.tdicl6d and prosecuted before the Superior court
for any such offeuce, aud on conviction thereof,
shall forfeit aud pay a fine of fifty dollars, and all
cost ofsaid suit, now if the owners, guardians and
managers of sueb, will read the law, they will find
they are not as friendly to their country as they
thiuk they are. They were friendly enough with
me once, to employ an attorney to drive mo and
other constables iuto our duty, is bi iuging their
slaves before the court* for trial ; and have they
ever p lid us our costs ! No ! neither de thoy ever
intend if they cau help it, but 1 intend to have
mino. Have they over paid their attorney that
they employed ? No! they thiuk he is rich and
cau do without it, and Rhodes is poor, aud they
can swindle him out of his foes. Now there is
but little difference between your cases and mine,
mine is ten days imprisonment more than yours,
which Ido not intend tobear. f can employ an
attorney to attend to the business better than you
have, where he will get his fees; and 1 will get
mine that is behind, for lintend to have my full
cost. I know who they are tl ia t is owing cost,
and they that owe it know as well -s I do. and
they would do well to pay it before n B execution
comes after them for it. I also well know w fo o j t
is that give their slaves privilege of hiring ‘heir
o in time, and I have sufficient proof, and mean
try the project next Superior Court ; I shall take 1
every one indiscriminately, and they must take it
as well as thoy can, I expect they will think'very
' strange of this, that I have quit bringing their
slaves to court for trial, and bring the owners in
stead of the slaves, but I can tell my reasons for
that, there is more to be made by taking the own
ers, than the slaves, and a!) you who are guilty of
■ giving you have given your slaves,
i know it; and as Ido not intend to bo bothered any
more, with thetr slaves. 1 will take the owners
i and bring them to court, and when they corn* to
pay fifty dollars, fine aud cost of suit, on two or
threeslavis, they will learn to keep them ion way
that they ought, (if they are friendly to rhe govern
ment) without having poor Rhodes dragging them I
up to coart for trial; and after triil, in less than
one week, they ate buying their meats, and they
will buy a small bit to-day, aud sttsil twice as much
next day, they will buy a chickm from a friend
Friday night, and Saturday night they will steal
a pig from another person ; you who are letting
slaves do that way, may watch.hem, for I intend
to watch you. ' HENRY IV. RHODES.
