Stores in the fire limit district are going to rent well iu about thirty days from now, we judge. By the way, wo would suggest that that fire limit ordinance might be overhauled to advantage. It might be so changed as to allow wooden structnroB put up not less than a certain number of feet to other buildings. Tho truth is, the ordinance is too sweeping for a terri tory as largo in area aud sparse in houses as that indicated by the limit A goad joke is told on a St. Simons- er, by his wifo, so it must be true. It seems that with his family he had gone to the upper portion of the State to spend about six weeks or so, rus ticating among tho grand old bills aloug the Coosa. Source two weeks elapsed before he longed for the crabs and mullet of his native home, aud yielding to tho impulse, left for home with his family. As they gray streaks of dawn wore visible, the next morn ing he was speeding aloug between No. 1 and the six mile crossing, and coming in sight of a bit of marsh aud a salt creek, he frantically aroused his youngest boy, exclaiming, “Wake up Charley and seo tho marsh." Ht. Simonai Item*- BY OURAY. Sailed Thursday for New York, brig Manson. The steam-tug Win Penny, of Sn ▼anoftb, passed here on Sunday morning from Satilla river, with * Ht* Went, Hut Didn’t Conquer. Withing loss than ono thousaud miles of Brunswick resides a young man who, in order to gratify his fond ness for tho society of the fair sex, does not hesitate at great inconveni ences, but whoso cup of trouble was more than filled on a recent occasion. It seeins that, a few Sabbaths since, ho startod by water for the residence of a family which embraces sovoral young ladies. When our' young friend neared his destination he dis covered, to his horror, that tho inevi table flow of the tide bad had a downward tendency for several hours, and in consequence about one-quar ter of a mile of water, mud and marsh lay betweed the head of navigation and tho usual landing-place on dry land. Two alternatives wero thus presented to him—to wade and bog through or turn back. His manhood rebelled against the thought of retreat, so he quickly removed his shoes, stockings and pantaloons, rolled up his uuder garment as high ns possi ble, held up his coat-tails, and started for solid ground, followed by his col ored oarsman. All went well nntil his erring feet found a spot a little softer than ho supposed, when down ho went, just a little beyond tbo point to which his aforesaid under gariueut bad Seen rolled, which was quickly suturnted with mud aud water. His colored companion assisted him tore- gain a firmer footing, and again thoy wont on. finally reaching dry land. Hero ho was met by the gentleman of tho house, who was taking a morn ing stroll, aud who invited him to go right up to the house and tboro make his toilet, as all tho ladies had gone to church. This invitation was ac cepted, hut as thoy neared the house the front door opened and the young ladies tiled into view on their way to church, having been detained from some cause. Our young friend gave a horrified yell, turned his face to ward the neighboring forest, and heavy tow of naval stores* Arrivod, Wednesday a. m., schooner Portina, to load for the company, and schoouer Mallory at the Gnscoiguo Mills for R. Two vessels with cargoes for Bos ton sailed this week, Norman on Mon day, Four Sisters ou Wednesday. Two barks, one brig, aud two seboou- ors now at tho docks. The cut of tho Mills last week was eomowbat above tho nverago, being over 9G,00Q feet per day for tho first four days. Owing to the weather on Friday aud Saturday it was not so very good. The heavy storm ou Saturday eve ning did uot do a great deal of dam age on the Islaud, except to blow down a fow fenoes, numerous trees, etc. Tho shipping nt tho wharf sus tained some littlo damage, but none wero hurt more than to carry away about all tho Hues that could ho fouud, The steamer Florida, Capt. Life uad I*ro perty Destroyed—Hoa ph nnd Inhabitant** Swept ’ With the Resins Tide. Bat where to begin and bow much to tell is the great desideratum with ns at this juncture. It would take volumes to tell of the tales of misery and death that has followed in tho wake of this tbo most terrific galo ex perienced in ibis latitude since the summer of 24, when death and deso lation swept our coast. * Tbo storm had been announced through the signal service long before it reached us, and sure enough it came, reaching our fair city during Saturday, and by 9 p. m. was making things lively both on land and water, tho wind up to midnight coming from tho north-west. About that hour it shifted to the west and south-west nnd spread terror ovor many households, but in due season the morning dawned nnd fears wero dispelled. Wo are pleased to stato that oar casualties can bo summed up in few words. A few trees snapped, an occasional upturn ing of somo roof corner, etc., about makes up the snm total, with tho ex ception of tho sulking of the steam dredge Hercules, which was stntionod in tho channel whero it had beon nt work. Mr. T. W. Doxter, therefore, is our biggest loser. Wo might also note somo littlo dnmngo done to ship ping, nnd also to lumber aud timber adrift. Bnt then all this sinks into insiguincnuce when wo rend of tho misfortunes of others. This cyclone for such we judgo it to be from tho direction of tho wind at differont points, scorned to extend from a short distance below us ns far north as abovo Charleston. Our sister city Savaunah aud vicin ity seemed to bavo been it tho vory path itself of tbo fearful wind and it is indeed appalling to read of the hor rors of its work. Houses wore blown down, pcoplo caught in the ruins, some maimed, some crushed to death and somo tmrued np, tho building taking fire from lamps or stoves. Negro lints along tho water courcos, with all their inhabitants, were swept nway l»y tho raging current and no traces left of either. The death rate has boon four- fill; prolmhly uot loss thau 300 people have been cither killed or drowned.— Dund bodies continue to bo found, and probably a true count will never bo Imd. So far ns henrd from, this seems to havo been more of n laud thuu a sen storm, though tho loss by sea was very great. In this particular section tho wind blew to tho sen, honco vos sols off onr coast wero blown away from the breakers. lifted and trees down by tbo scores. Our beautiful vil lage of Dorchester is a scono of shock ing desolation—every honso is in jured; nearly all out-bnildings crushed. Each house was grazed by some of them iu falling.— Just a trilling cbnngo of tlio wind, at tho moment, nnd uvory house might have been crushed, and many lives lost.
