We now.notify congressmen not
to send us any department reports*
We have seen over-worked mail
bands tugging up bills iroin do|>ot
to post office, with two or three
bushel sucks of such litcraturo till
conscience forbids our becoming a
party to any such imposition upon
our laboring follow men,who get
no pay for such service.
“And yet there are statesmen
who think thut Georgia inis enough
people for iis Territory, and the
last legislature refused to appropri
ate a few thousand dollars to Com
missioner Fountaine etc;*’ Thus
writes H. W.G.in the Constitn
turn. Yes and tliore are others of
us, who, after studying the ques
tion for years, ondorso every nc
tiou of the legislature, that tonds
t« leave the people of other dimes
to seek homes among us, without
any hot-bed influence being
brought to bear. If they come let
it be hecauso they like our institu
tions and modes of thought, for nb
sence of affinity, accounts for the
effervescnco of chemicals, and the
disruption of society. Again, if it
is true as II. W. G. says thut onr
population is only 26 to the square
mile it is because marshes, swamps
sand beds, rocky mountain-peaks,
and gorges out of which nothing
but a goat or squirrel could climb,
are counted in its area. In many
parts of the state, where it is rea
sonably inhabitable the people are
already in want of elbow room.
For this reason many risk the wes
tern drive; and on this account
many are cultivating lands that do
well to yield five bushels to the
acre, and much ot it never that,
and yet many have to pay vent on
such lands. Wc have but one sure
crop in Georgia, and that is the
Genus homo, and consequently wo
are independent about popula
tion.
