Jack Archie one day last week while

I write yon a few lines which I hope

We bad a g- od rain on last Sunday
evening, which raised Sfeoal Creek so
that it waa impossible to cross it for
some time at the ford. 7here was some
hail near here, but damaged nothing
that 1 heard of.
Farmers are getting along tolerably
well, consideriuj^he late spring aud so
much wet weather.
Wheat is excellent in this sectiou ami
commencing to head. From the preaent
prospects we will Soon have buiscuit.
Oats look well also, and I hope we will
have a good yield, even ’"an hundred
fold.”

fine Mineral Springs on his laud.
Capt. Sherwood moved his futility to
tbia place last Saturday.
The locusts huve not visited this sec-
tiou yet, though very plentiful two or
three miles below here.
Splendid crop of huckleberries around
Walesca, of which we had some nice
pies recently.
A nice drove of loose mules running
at large in this settlement, yet too young
to work.
Several years ago there were two very
dr.-11 brothers living in Clara county, Gu.,
by tlie name of Martin and Willis T—,
(1 will not give the Bir-namc.) and one
day they had been out in the forest,
chopping wood, and on tlieir return
home, Martin saw a lion* in a tree that,
had b.-eu cut for the purpose of catching

Mary Leonard, colored, who lives five
miles from this place, with tlie family of
a Mr. Self, was committed to jail on 11
charge of concealing the dead body of
her infant. It was hid behind a log
about a hundred yards tfroni tlie premi
ses, where it remained for two weeks be
fore it was discovered on last Friday ev
ening. She wns seen to frequent the
place where the child was very rudely
burried every day, and suspicion finally
rioeoed into a search when the infant's
body was found. A ooroner’s jinquest
was held on Moadaj^last over tlie bones
of the child, and a verdict rendered
“that it camo to its death from an un
known cause,” yet it is supposed to be a
first class case of infanticide, and tlie
mother will bo held for trial at tho Au
gust term of Cherokee Superior Court.

going up, and put to any reasonable test
upon completion.
Contractus will be required to give
bond and security in double the amount
of the contract, for its faithful perfor
mance in the time agreed upon. Said

Canton, Cherokee county, Ga,. between
ilie hours of 10 a. m„ aud 2 p xr., the
building of two Rock Pillars at tlw for
mer site of Hawkius' bridge across Little
River. ' ’
Also the building of two Rock Pillars
at (Jlierokee J/dls, at or near the place
of tlie old bridge across Little River at
thut place. These pillars are to be of
good rock, faced and laid iu lirae trad
rnortar—first class work- They will be
some 13 feet wide, three feet thick on
top, and batter one inoh iu every foot to
tbe Imttom, Every contractor will be
required to give a bond with two good
securities, in double the amount of bis
bid, for the faithful performauce of his
Coutraot iu the time that may be agreed
upon. Said work to be paid for when
taxos are collected in the fall, of the
present year. Said pillars will be
