Mr. Editor:—While others are
Ttnfilating their view* in rtgitril to
the evils . till which the ptople ot
the cotton producing portions of the
country are afflicted ; uud arc point
ingout the* cause ami tdiggetting the
remedy, I ask the u»e of a amall
apaoe in your ooluinna that I tray
give the lean It <1 my deliberation*
upon the aubj ui ; and your reader*
may take it lor it is worth.
That thoae who aie engaged in
agricultural pnramia in thit* country
bare long been puraning a mistaken
policy, ia a aellcvnlent proposition,
and no argument it iieceaaarv to dem
onatrate the tact. 'I he moat caauul
observer know* that labor does not
receive an adequate reward, and that
bankruptcy and |roverty threaten tbe
whole country under the preaeut
atate of thing*. The end of eucli
year witne**e* the difficulty in the
caae of a large majority of fanner*,
to “make buckle and tongue meet,”
or in other word*, to make their tn-
coniea meet, their < X|*tiset. One gen
eral failure in the crop*, caused lit
drouth, atorm*, catapillar* or gra»«
hoppers, aould cause umveriul di<
treat and untold Buffering. And not
only would the lurmer be tbe anffer
er, but all claaae* would feel the
■hock, and la-come victim* of the
wide spread ruin There ia a great
wrong in our syatemi. Thia fact, I
repeat, ia evident to all. Now tin
question n, in whut doea thia wrong
consist? The ateiotyped aiiawer I*,
•'Too muck cotton and too little corn'.''
But with all due deference to the
servants of the preaa und their hoso
ol norrea|K>ndeiita, I mant that the
anawer ia not correct! The cauae ol
the evil ta to lound elaewheie. Munv
of ua havcolteii hit. during the pu*t
til teen year*, Ihut there was too much
corn. %t least, there wa* so much
in the market taut we could not sell
our surplus of that article for enough
to pay the cost of production • and
if all were to follow the advice of
thoae who are everlaatiuglv crying
"plant more corn," it would aoon be
ao plentiful that it would be u mat
ter of economy to uae it aa luel, ns ia
tbe cuatom in aome portions of the
west. Com ia a good thing, but “too
muoh of a good thiug ia good for
nothing.” Wliv, air, not longer tbun
ten year* ago 1 had corn hauled six
teen miles to the railroad, und found
g’eat difficulty in selling it ul all
J et at the saint-time, the puper pub'
ished at that place was coutinunilv
crying “plant more corn !” For one
I could not tee the point, nor can 1
see it yet so plainly aa tome preteud
to. Not more than four years ago, 1
had a few huudred bushels on baud
and ooutd uot sell it all, until tli
rats had destroyed a great port ion ol
it. I finally sold the most of what
waa left to aome Hard Shell Baptists
at about seventy cents :>er bushel on
aoredit. Under the mith-ntble law*
I waa afraid to aell it toauyU dy else
on those terms. I will admit Ilia'
aome men ought to “plant more corn,'
bnt I deny that all should. Koine
lands are better adapted to corn than
anything else, anil in such cases it
should be put in oorn ; and if all the
landa of a neighborhood are of that
class, let oorn he the general crop ;
bnt on the other baud, there are
lands that will make a fair yield ol
cotton but will scarcely produce corn
at all. A man’s whole farm may be
of that nature, and all the iurms lor
miles around may be of a similar
character. Must corn lie the prin
cipal crop where auch is the case ?
To illustrate: there is u larni that
will produce, on an average, two
hundred and fifty pounds of lint cot*
ton per acre, which, at ten cents u

than fifteen bushels per acre in corn,
which at fifty oeiita per bushel (the
common price in the fall) will bin-g
•even dollars and fifty ceuia, making
n difference of seventeen dollars and
fifty oents per uore. Which then i«
better, to plant ull that larni, or even
a part of it, in oorn, or to plant it ull
in cotton und buy the corn ?
The South is a cotton country,
and the God of nature intended tbai
it should be used principally for the
production of thut great com modi
ty, except those sections where the
cultivation of sugar and rice are
more profitable. The evil then that
troubles us esnnot be too much cot
ton or too little corn, for supply aud
demand and other things will always
regulute the production of tins.-
great crops; but the evil consist* in
a mistaken financial policy. The
credit mjntem end eatravmjame in our
expenditure are the cause of the
trouble. Low prices for whni w>-
aell, whether it be corn or cotton, und
a ruinous per cent, on whut wc buy
on time, whether it be food or mi-
ment, or both, is what is making:
claves of us all! No class of people
cau pay from sixty to u hundred pci
cent, on everything they eat or wear,
or use in any wuy, ami he anything
but “hewers of wood uud druweis ol
water” for n shrewder clsss. ll ul
would live within their means ui.J

cud of our troubles ; or it those who
have money to lend could be secured
in loaning it ut even tweuty live per
oent., it would be u saving business
for the poor furmer to borrow snd
buy whut he needs at reasonable pri-
oes; and lean not see why the man
who lends his money should not have
the same protection us the muo who
lends his goods or family supplies.
