"There's a lieautiful atorv about n

Well, I road the story. It told all
about a good Ixiy whose name was James,
aud hrn father wa« jioor, so lie kept a pig
that cost him 25 cents, and when it grew
up he sold it for $30, and lie brought the
money to his fattier and said:
“Here, father! take this. Oh, how

old and not gixxl for much,” ami his
father burst into tears, but I don’t
kuow what for—I wouldn’t burst into
tears mnch if anylxxly gave me $30—anil
said:
“Bless you, my noble boy; yon and
your sweet pig have saved me from a
watery grave,” or something like that.
It wus a real good story, aud it ruado

solved that I would get a little new pig
for 25 cents, and keep it till it grew up,
nnd then surprise father with $29, and
keep oue for myself as a reward for my
gixxl conduct. Ouly I made up my
mind not to lot anylxxly kuow about it
till after tho pig should be grown up,
ami then how the family would be de

said James’ act was.
The next day I went to Farmer Smith,
and got him to give me a little pig for
notiiiug, only I agreed to help him wtxxl
his garden all summer. It was a beau
tiful pig, about as big as oar baby, only
it was a deal prettier, and its Jail was
elegant. I wrapped it up in an old
shawl, and watched my chance and got
it up into my room, which iH on the
third story. Then I took my trunk aud
emptied it. aud l>ored some holes in it
for air, and put the pig in it.
1 had the beet fun that ever wus, all
that day and the next day, taking care
of that dear little pig. I gave him one

THE HI, A PE OP THE EAHTH,
Admitting tho Arctic ocean to lie
open, navigable, and that a navigator
had inntle a circle and sailed around
both continents, this fsot would not
prove the earth round, any more than
yon leaving your office anil traveling
around the four squaroH leading to aud
from it aud arriving at the namn start
ing |xiint would prove tho ground and
houses ooniixising suiil block round and
revolving.
The six divisions composing the
earth represent six persons lying on
their hocks in a vast laxly of wator
with their faces upturned to tho sky;
North America—A man on his back,
his head ixiiutiug north, his feet south ;
Month America—His wife on her bock,
her head ixiiutiug to his feet; lier long
hair, resembling Mury Magdalen’s at the
foot of tho cross, twicted around his
feet, representing the Isthmus of Pana
ma, connecting North aud Houth Amer
ica. Three thousand miles distant to
the east, Europe, another man, lyiugou
his back, head pointing same. At tlieir
feet, Africa, a negro, his short hair
leaving a space between his head and
their feet, representing tho Htraits of
Gibraltar that scparati-H Euro|x) from
Africa.
To the southeast another mini lyiug
alone (Australia), his head |xiintiug to
the north, his feet south. To mnke
these six persons round uuil revolving,
tile left hand of Australia should grasp
the right hum! of North America. Thera
are but two ways of doing it: First, to
bend the earth outward, downward and
under ; second, to bend inwuril, upward
and ucross. You must either put the
contiuents back to buck, or face to face.
In the first position, yon would have a
continent turned upsido down, which
common sense will teach you cuunot be
the case. *
In the other, you would have the iu-
habitants of the two continents like
Harry Bobs, bobbing their heads against
each other. If you would keep travel
ing west from Bethlehem, and George
W. Oliilils, Esq., east from Ixiug Branch
until you would reach your offices, you
would never get there. When Gen.
Grant was in Pekin, he was in the same
position as the Irishman in Cork. He
was in Pekin’s own town, head up and the
sky over him. No difference whore you
go on earth, you aro standing on your
feet, head up und sky over you—proves
the earth flat. See Messrs. Eaton and

A little loss than three years ago—in

day or two ago, also at current prices it
wimill have taken $19,196,000, and this
alter a stock dividend of 100 per cent.
Rock Island, one of the steadiest of
stocks, could have been bought up en
tire for $29,375,000 in 1878; now it
would take $60,742,000 to buy the out

at the same time in 1878—and it was not
then ut its lowest point—would have
cost $7,773,500; to-day, with a heavier
debt before it and very little increase in
property, $18,950,000 would be needed
to buy it. Bimilar instances might be
