BE A HUS. Exceptionally long lieards have always attracted a good deal of attention, and history records many instances of this kind, ltaubor von Talberg, n German Knight, and Councillor of Maximilian 1L (d. 1575), rejoicod in a beard whieh reached to his feet, and from thoro again to his waist. John Mayo, a celebrated painter of the sixteenth ooutury, who accompanied Charles V. in his campaign, had a beard so long that, although ho was a tall man, it would hang upon the ground when he stood upright; he wore it, therefore, fastened to his girdle, George Killingworth, sent by Queen Mary as one of her agents, in 1655, to Czar Ivan the Terrible, is said to have had a beard flvo feet two inches long. In the olden time, when every part of the body had its price, the beattl was valued at 20 shillings—a large sum for the timo^-while the loss of a leg was only estimated at 12 shillings. Y/o can easily imagine that, at periods when the board and wluskers were looked upon ob ornamental, false boards were ' substituted for the gemiino article. Pe dro IV., of Aragon (1351;, found himself compelled to prohibit Ills Catalonian subjects from wearing false boards. But the most singular substitute is the gold en beard which, Chrysoste mus says, was worn by the Kings of Persia. Buotouius says the same of Culigula, the Uoinon Emperor. According to Andreas Favyn, the Kings of France of the first d; nasty wore beads entwined with gold threads. Duke Benatus, of Lorraino, was the lost, and it is related that he wore at the fu neral of Charles of Burgundy, who died at Nancy, in 1477, a beard of gold thread hanging down to his girdlo. Beards used to be taxed in England. In Europe and a portion of Asia boards prevail, until we go beyond India, when they gradually disapwr. tub cubbb oif pooh rRJWTtyo. fihort-sightxincAs, or myopy, is in creasing to an alarming extent among civilised nations. It is commonly sup posed that only a few persons ore thus afflicted, but the truth is that a large portion of every community is more or less troubled with iinjwirfeot vision. Myopy among school-ch ildnen and at- endants at higher institutions of learu- ug in this -nd other countries hna l>oen horoughly investigated by Prof, Her mann Cohn and n immlier of other emi nent oculists, who have examined in all more than 40,000 scholars. Prof. Cohn cites among the principal causes of myopy, badly-constructed school-benches, bad writing and bod typo- The latter evil, he says, dosel-Ves especial attention, and for remedying it he makes some valuable suggestions, of whieh the following are the most im portant: " The most important point is the size >f the letters. We cannot determine ‘his by the measurement of the cm, as -ho printers do, for that rognrds the shank of tho type, of which readers know nothing; but it must Iso judged by a special measurement of the visible let ter. I have adopted as the standard of measurement the letter n, that being the most regular and symmetrical in shape in both the Roman and German alpha bets. I have found that the n in pearl type is about threo-one-huudredthn of an inch high, in nonpareil about oue-twen-* ty-flfth of an inch, in brevier about one twentieth of an inch, in long primer one-seventeenth of an inch, and in pica one-fourteenth of an inch.' We have hitherto no definite rule concerning the smallest size of letters which should bo permitted for the sake of the eyes. The distance at whioh a letter of any partic ular size can be seen does not afford a guide to it, for it does not correspond at all with (he distance at which matter printed Ik the same type can bo read steadily at the usual distance in reading. I believe that letters which are leas than a milli meter and a half (one-seventeenth inch) high will finally prove injurious totheeye. How little attention has liithorto been paid to thia important subject is exem plified in the fact that even ocouliatie journals and books frequently oontaiu nonpareil, or letters only a millimeter (oue-twenty-flfth inch) high. Many of the text books required by the school authorities are badly printed. The of ficers should go throngh every school book with millimeter rule in their hands, and throw out all in which letters are t'oWPKBfa rvMount nrMtr. Cowpor, it will Ik- remembered, v bs of a melancholy turn of mind, and his mind Inx-ame morbid on tho subject of religion. In fact, at times ho had fits of insanity. In Ijondon, while ruminal- tug on the uselessness of human life, he was seized with the ettdden impulse to destroy himself—to go at onoe and drown himself. He ordered a hackhey roach to lie brought to tho door. When it arrived he rushed down stairs and into it without giving ordera where it wns to be driven. Waiting some little time, the driver asked when# he would liko to lie taken to. "To the Thames,'* The manner and look ih which these words were uttered convinced the driver, who appears to have had more than the usual intelligence of men of his class, that his occupant was deranged. Ho drove off, but not to the river where Oowper had ordered him. He drove up one street nml down another for a long time, while Oowper sat back in bis seat in mental abstraction, which convinced the driver that ho was crazy. After a long, rownd- almut drive he drove up to the poet'a lodging and told him he had |rrived "whereho was ordered.” Oowper de- -cendod from the vehicle, entered the house and went to his room. Then in his returhing consciousness the trnth of the entire transnetiou entered his mind, and be found that he had not seen the river at all, nor had he drowned himself 11s he had intended when he left the chamber two hours lieforo. The distance between the lines is an important factor in respect to ease of reading. As is well known, tho compositors often insert thin leads between the linos so that the letters project above the average height and those that fall tielow the line shall not touch. Every oue knows that legibility is improved by contrast; tho lorker the print and tho clearer the paper, eo much easier is the reading. When the lines are close together, or ■lie matter is printed ‘solid,’ the eyes >ecome tired sooner, because the con trast is lessened. The linen tend to run ogother, and the effort to separate them will tend to lessen the evil nhould be undertaken without delay. Negloet in this matter will result in everybody's woering glesses, aud in seriously imped ing the performance of all the world’a work, especially those branches whioh particularly require the exercise of good eyesight. In the mntter of printing, es pecially, reform is called for. There is no reason why small typo, or type ar ranged in lines having inadequate space between them, should be tolernted, nnd the public should stoutly refnso to countenance the twe of any Hcliool books or patronize papers nnd periodicals that are printed without regard to the best interests of the students' or renders' eyes. SYRUP Among the scientific and mechanical novelties of recent note mention tnaiy be made of a method for ascertain ing the depth of the sea by means of it glass tube, closed below by a plug, and provided above with a capillary or ifice. The tube, being full of air, is low ered into tho sea, when the air becomes compressed and water trickles in, the quantity of water admitted furnishing the datum or evidence from which tho depth may be calculated, An extraordinary and almost incredi ble story of cruelty comes from Jersey City, where a mother is charged with deliberately starving her ohild to death and announcing its death, providing a coffin and actually arranging tho lxxly as if for burial before it had breathed its lapt. When its condition wan discov ered, starvation was so far advanced that life oould not be saved. This remarka ble parent is charged by her own sister with having lost three other children in the same way. Is there no law in Now Jersey for suck crimes ?
