And heap the laurels It has won
Above Its place of rest.

Growing Old.
Touch us, oh Timel with light hand as you pas®,
Tempt us to think it a loving caress ;
Tread on our hearts, too, with teverent care—
Crush not the flowers of life blooiring there ;
Furrow our foreheads with care if you will,
But let youth linger within onr hearts still.
’Mid our dark tresses are flbros of pray,
Silent reminders of life’s fleeting day ;
And when wc turn to tho shadowy past,
On its bright altars lay ashes and dust;
All its fair idols aro marked with decay-
All its sweet pictures arc faded away.
Sadly we look for tho friends of tho past,
They of strong heart, and the beautiful trust;
Some we fine sleepirg beneath rcnlptnred stone ;
Some toiling wearily onward alone ;
Pome thro’ ambition grigyrn heartless and cold,
But one und all, savo the dead, growing old.
Oft wc grow weary in watching in vain
O’er hopes that always but shadows remain ;
Weary of counting the joys (bat have died ;
Weary of laying bright vhtons aside ;
Weary of taking but dross for pure gold;
Weary, so woary, of hearts growing eld.
Chase from us, Time, all shadowy fern;
Lift from our lives the slow burden of years;
Shadow onr foreheads and sprinkle our hair,
Bat, oh I shield our hearts from the furrows of
care!
Let not the heart grow selfish or cold.
And we shall no longer fear to grow old.
Why the Robin’s Breast is Red:
[The following exquisite little gem, originally
appearing in The Pacificator, a Catholio journal,
edited in this city during the war by Messrs.
Walsh A B'ome, Is from the pen of Jas. B. Ran
dall, Esq. Mr. R. is decidedly one of the first
poets on this continent, and in this particular ef
fusion very thoroughly and beautifully illustrates
the peculiar sweetness of his muse:]
The Bavinr, bowed beneath his cross,
Clomb un the dreary hill,
And Irom the agonizing wreath
Ran many a crimson rill.
The brawny Roman throat him on
With unrelenting hand—
’Till, staggering slowly ’mid the crowd,
Ue fell upon tho sand.
A little bird that warbled near,
That immemorial day,
Flitted around and strove to wrench
One single thorn away ;
The cruel Bpiko impa'ed his breast,
And thus, ’tis sweetly said,
The Robin has bis silver vest •
Incarnadined with red.
