CONSTITUTIONALIST Independent of the merit* which the follow ing poem possesses in a literary point, the moral which it convoys cannot fail to have a most beneficial eflLct upon the minds of the young and unsophisticated. Perhaps over sen sitive persons may object to its publication, but as our object is the public good, in the broadest acceptation,, we are willing to incar the dis pleasure of a few for the benefit of the many: Paul Rowland’s Ghost. Which of ns sinned ? Was it you that yielded, Or I that tempted, or both that fell? Alas 1 the regret is with each as well, Bat yoa are abnerred and 1 am shielded. Folks loek down upon yon with scorning ; The bonnets and beavers nod tome; Last night we were friendly as we could be— But 1 do not know yon at all this morning. Did yon blush as I coldly cut you to-day, Having rued and cozzened so close betore ? I have used and need you, my sweet, no more; For I have my purpose, and yen your way. It pained you last night when 1 spoke of gold, And yon hid yonr tears on my breast. I think— While 1 gayly jested, and bade you drink ; You will love it, my sprightly one, ero you be old. Ton are pretty. Indeed, snd may marry vou know! There’s a fellow—a shoemaker—did you not state ? Who used at the shop-door of nights to wait, And follow yon home with his cheeks ag’ow. I think he loved you, if euch folks can, But you saw my gold seals as I smiled and spoke, Did you say that the clown’s soft heart was brok", Pshaw 1 1 did nothing to grieve the man. Only the bine ryes kissed by your cnrl, Only the little feet under your gowp, Only the full arms btromnd, brown— I saw as I said : “ I must Snow that girl!’’ Did you dream of weddings with children fraught? Ah t not all the little ones know tbeir sires, Did you read in my face the wild desires, Though yours were as pure as a baby’s thought ? I gave you presents—trifles and rings— And your lingers trembled the gold beneath ; I praised your rich color and beautiful teeth; Perhaps you believed the ridiculous things! I woke the woman wifbln the child— How ysu lay in my arms with yonr Hds aflame, Never dreaming such passion led to shame, bosom was high with its heaving? I whispered the mysteries dimly known— Your face lay burning on mine the while, As I spoke or Haidees in far-off jslp, And of hearts that beat for each other alone. They boiled your blood till the springs were dry; They brought you delirious dreams by night; And yonr father's hearth, in old days so bright, Grew cold uad mean in your scornful eye. Hen were not the beings they used to seem, Nor purity pleasure, nor love a truth, Nor labor honor, nor glory youth, Nor sin the terror that young hearts deem: You have not forgotten—ol if von might— Ihe walk In the wind when tho leaves blew by, nd a few pale starlets peeped from the sky, And the shop-windows glared with a grinning light. You were walking with me to your grave, my dear; And the door that shut was your coffin-lid; And when in the lazar-place we hid. The oarvtd couch wts your shroud and bier 1 Never again In the sunlight swoet Bhall the old, old peaoe lo your bine eyes come; Nor in the calm evening's wildering bum Your step ring as musioal down the street. But what of it all I l know th it yon wept And spoke of your mother with bitterness; And said tbat'you feared 'hat tlight to press Your brother’* cheek ero he fondly slept.. Pish I Somebody else would as much here done, And smiled at the triumph, as I at mine; When I toll it so gleefully, over my wine; And the boys say, in short', it was wonderful fun. 1 wPh that the deuced thing would not recall, When I sit at midnight beside mv bed; And f.mrv I hear a light footstep trend Down the stilly floor of my lonesome hall I Your far.*, very pale, and spectral, flits Down the aisles of my fancy, and somehow glides On the lofty ho -esof my even side s ; 1 must drink tome pale sherry to met and my wits. Zounds! You trouble ma still; Eureka, her,’a gold; And the Treasury note* will buy ribbons and dress. I must write you n letter of tenderness, That will stttle the matter for new and old ! How ever that girl’s face around me roams 1 My knees are trembling, my voice is thick: How blue elimha she flame on the candle stick! God pity us both in our haunted homes 1 Themed Petticoat ami the White. HT CHARLKB MACK AY. O, the red. the Haunting netticoaf, That courts ’he rye of and y. That loves to flare and be admired, And blinks Irozu far array; It may delight the roving sight, And charm the fancy free, But if its wearer’s half as bold, I’ll pass and let her be ; With her red, flaunting petticoat, She’s not the girl fur me. But tb* whits, th* modest petticoat, As pure ns drilled -mow, That shuns the gate in crowded ways Where tollies come and go; It stirs the primrose on tho path, Or daisy on the lea; And if the wear- r’s like the gatb, How beautiful is she. Relics of the Bombardment of Sa vannah A countryman standing on the sidewalk on Bay street, near she eu“tom bouse, a few davs since, was at'raced by the operations of a gang of negroes on the other side of the street, who were engaged with shovels cleaning out the gutter. Every now and then a negro would 6toop down and pick up a cannon ball and throw it on one’ side, and then resume his digging for a minute or so, when be would pick up another ball and throw it down in like man ner. All the negroes were similarly engaged. “Weil, well.” exclaimed the countryman, ‘‘l never had no idee that the Yankees piled so many cannon balls and bombshells into old Sa vannah before. Why, they must made ’em whiz about the old burg like a swarm of bum ble bees when they can dig ’em out of the ground as fast as that. No wonder the swell heads gin in at last.” His curiosity having been raised to the high est pitch, be walked across the street to get a nearer view of the interesting process of ex huming the Yankee bombshells. As he approached the gang of negroes he saw, wbat he had not observed before, that a chain was attached to each shot, and on a little closer examination he discovered that the other end of the chain was attached to the leg of the negro. His astonishment was now greater than ever. He looked on for a minute tn silent amaze ment. At length, as one of then groes near him picked up his ball and threw it on the ground again toe length of the chain to the right of him, he ventured to ask : “ I say, Buck, what upon yeath is yon all doin’ with them cannon bails?” " Jist takin care of’em," replied one of the negroes. “ Well, what have yon got ’em choined to yonr legs that away for?” “So the enssed rebs can’t steal ’era,” re plied the intelligent freedman. “Heaps of thieves aboutbere, boss ” “ Well, well,” said the unsophisticated in dividual from the rural districts, “I heam Savannah was a monstrong thievin’ place, but I didn't suppose cannon balls had to be chain ed to people’s legs to keep ’em from bein’ stole.” To prevent the repetition of such impositions upon, the crednltty of unsuspecting persons the Authorities have bad the chaps who sport the ball and chain in our streets labeled with con spicuous placards —Savannah Herald. Diabolical Attkmpt at Murdek byNegroes. —George and John Lee, and George and John Patterson, all negroes, were arrested yesterday on the charge of having attempted to murder tho son of Mr. H Porterfield Taylor, who re sides on the Meadow BrWge road, about three miles from town. Mr. Taylor, Jr, a young man of about eighteen fears old, was standing in his father! s yard playing with a dog. when two shots were fired, the first killing the dog, and the second wounding Mr. Taylor in the shoul der. An alarm was given, and Mr! H. P. Tay lor ran out and succeeded, with assistance, in arresting the four negroes we have named. Mr. W. E. Wade, one of the justices of the peace for the county of Henrico, issued a war rant for tho arrest of the negnes. and consta ble A. J. Waldron went out to Mr. Taylor’s and brought them to the city. They will be tried to-day by Judge McEntee. No motive whatever is assigned for the attack made upon Mr. Tnylcr ; it was prompted by nothing but pure and savage malignity.—Richmond Exam iner, 30th. A gentleman from New York, who came down the road yesterday, ’reports that at Opeli ka a negro girl, some sixteen or seventeen years old came in, with her ears cut off close to her head, and alleged that it was done by a man in United States uniform, because she would not let him do violence to her person. No no tice had been taken of the outrage by the mili tary authorities. Such inhumanities should he ferretted out. and th- guilty parties punish ed severely who ever they may be. Where the civil authority hag not.power to act, the military certainly has, and we trust Between the two no acts of the kind will be allowed to disgrace the community.
