THE CONSTITUTIONAILST Cottage and Hall, Baby has crept to hi* sheltering nest, Now that tie day is done, And with wee head piitowed upon my breast, H»* gonc to sleep with the son. Roses and dimple* are hurled quite, Under the snow of my bosom white, A nd over my heart creeps a ringlet bright— A beautiful golden one. Baby is king in our hum Ye eot, Enthroned in oar hearts sits he, And never a king had merrier lot Than baby, it seems to me; For Jove in his presence waiting stand*, With tremulous feet and willing hands, Beady to fly as each whim commands, And his humble slave to b«. Baby is heir to no title old, Nowhere hoarded away, Arc deed* of acres and heaps,of gold, Which are to is* his, one day; But hi* Is a heritage better than fame, The well-earned wealth of an honest n.'imtc, Which never has known the brand of sKfeone ; 4 God grant they never may. Bo when my household task* are o’er, And baby, tired is he, 1 (it down here in the cottage door, In the shade of a giant tree, And watch where the broad roads wind away, TUI somebody comes through the gloaming gray, And a loving hand In mine own doth lay, And kisses baby and me. There’s a rich man’s mansion over the way, And through the curtains of lace, I sow, in the arm* af Its nurse to-day, A baby with a wee pale face; And I saw through tears, what I saw beside, Kor not all the trappings of wealth and pride, The little misshapen form could hide, Bor clothe it with simple grace. And a lady oft at the window standi, I have dreamed of those as fair, But I wonder if ever the jeweled hands, Tlie gems of affection wear. Or the golden curls, over her brow which stray, Are ever for kisses brusltcd away; Her husband has other loves, they say, And his heart has a home elsewhere. Bo I love to sit In the cottage door, With baby upon my knee, And count to my heart the blessings o’er, Which have guided my life for me; For there’s many a heart which knoweth not The joys and loves of my humble lot, And would rather be queen of a simple cot, Than a lady of high degree. An EcoenthicGuntleman.—The Now York correspondent of tiic Philadelphia rress jfives the following account of the gentleman lately robbed of a million and a half of dollars in New YArk: “ Mr. Lord, the millionaire In question, Is a very old gentleman, with some of the eccen tricities of age; that ho has frequently gone borne, leaving his safe open, with sueh valuable documents as those now lost within the reach of the dishonest. On one occasion the janitor found the safe in this way, locked it find re stored the key to its owner on the following morning. On another occasion he found the same key in the wash-basin, and speaks of the remarkable trustfulness of the old gentleman in matters generally. If sueh forgetfulness in the matter of the key of the safe wore oi fre quent occurrence, it is not difficult to under stand that the opportunity may have been watched and taken advantage of. Doubtless the matter will be so cleared up in a day or two that something more definite may he written on the subject. As it is, it is sufficiently interesting; the amount of the loss, the immense reward offered, and the alleged comparative Indiffer ence with which the owner bears the loss, of whom It Is said that he remarked ho would pre fer losing the money rattier than have a news paper fuss made about it.” Ladies’ Fair Disturbed.-- Last night, about hull-past eight o’clock, considerable excitement —during which one lady fainted—was created In the rooms corner of King and Royal streets, in which a fair for the benefit of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, is now being held, by the appearance there of a large squad of sol diers, who marched In, preceded by the United States flag. They demanded the instant re moval of the pictures representing Generals Lee and Stonewall Jackson, which were on cx himtlon there, threatening, in case of refusal, to tear them down themselves. Fearing a dis turbance, aftd wishing to avoid anything out of which political capital could possibly be manu faetvred in this transition stage in the country’s history, the managers of the fair compiled with the demand, and the obnoxious likenesses were taken from their positions on the wall. [Alexandria Gazette, IGfA. niBADVANTAOBS or Bring VViutb.—Tho President of the Opelousas railroad has ordered that negroes pay the same fare on the road that white folks do. That is right. Why did the Federal officers who controlled the road let the negroes pass over it at half price ? White la borers going from New Orleans toAttakapas to get work were charged live dollars (or passage on the curs—negro laborers were charged two dollars and a half. A white passenger was taxed two and a half dollars for being white, or a negro was credited witli two and a half dol lars lor being black. Why did the Federal officers make this odious distinction between black and white people ? Do they not claim that no distinction should be made ? [Planters' (Louisiana) Banner. Seigfried, Pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church, Philadelphia.] Gentlemen : I have recently been laboring under the distressing effects of indigestion, accompanied by a prostration of the nervous system. Numerous reme dies were recommended by friends, and some of them tested, but without relief. Your Iloofland’s German Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried them, and whose favorable mention of these Bitters Induced me to try them. I must confess that 1 had an aversion to Patent Medicines from the “ thousand and one” quack “ Bitters,” whose only aim seems to be to palm off sweeten and drugged liquor upon the commu nity in a sly way, and the tendency of which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard. Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal preparation, I took it with happy effect. Its action, not only upon the stomach, but upon the nervous system, was prompt and gratifying. I feel that I have derived great and permanent benefit from the use of a few bottles. Very respectfully, yours, W. D. ÜBiaraiiD, No. 254 Shackamaxon st. A [From the Rev. E. D. Fendall, Assistant Editor Chris tian Chronicle, Philadelphia.] I have derived decided benefit from the use of noof land’s Gorman Bitters, and feel it my privilege to re commend them as a most valuable tonic, to all who are suffering from general debility or from diseases arising hom derangement of of the liver. Yours, truly, E. D. Fssdall. [From Rev. D. Merrige, Pastor of the Passyunk Bap tist Church, Philadelphia.] From the many respectable recommendations given to I)r. Iloofland’s German Bitters, 1 was induced to give them a trial. After using several bottles I found them to be a good remedy for debility, and a most ex cellent tonic for the stomach. D. Mmrkicb. [From Rev. Wm. Smith, formerly Pastor of the Vin centown and Millville (N. J.) Baptist Churches.] Having used in my family a number of bottles of your Hootlaml's German Bitters, i have to say that I regard them us an excellent medicine, specially adapt ed to remove the diseases they are recommend lot They strengthen and invigorate the system wtien de bilitated, and are useful in disorders of the liver, loss of appetite, &c. I have also recommended them to several of my friends, who have tried them, and found them greatly beneficial ill the restoration of health. Yours, truly, William Smith. 900 Hutchinson st., Pliiia. xw [From the Rev. Joseph 11. Kennard, Pastor ol the Tenth Baptist Church.] I have been frequently remiestcd to connect mv name with commendations of different kinds of medicines, but regarding tho practice as out of my appropriate sphere, l have in all cases declined; but with a clear proof in various iustaujos, and particularly In my own family, of the usefulness of Dr. Hoofiand’s German Bitters, I depart for once from my usual course, to express my full conviction that, for general debility of the system, and especially for Liver Complaiut, it is a safe and valuable preptvrntion. In some cases It may fall; but usually, I doubt not, it will he very beneficial to those who sutler from the above causes. Y ours, very respectfully, J. H. Kknkari\ Eighth, below Coates st.
