Giving promise to the reapers, After labor rest shall come Tired hands be camly folded, ’Midst the sacred scenes of home. Patiently the farmer waited— Work’d and waited like a man, Never doubting that the Master Well would end what he began. Now he hath the promis’d blessing, Fruit for all his honest toil; Never lord was half as happy As the tiller of the soil. Vanity. The sun comes up,and the sun goes down, And the day and night are the same as one, The ve r grows green and the year grows brown, And what is it all, when all is done ? drains of sombre or shining sand, gliding into and out of the hand. And men go down in ship* to the seas, And a hundred ships are the same as one ; And backward and forward blows the breeze, And what is it all, when all is done! A tide with never a shore in sight Betting Bteadlly on to the night. The fisherman droppeth his net in the stream, And a hundred str am< are the same as.one; And the maiden dreameth her love-lit dream, And what is it all, when all is done J The net of the fisher the burden breaks, And after the dreaming the dreamer wakes. 0! Pm a Good Old Rebel* Chant to the Wild Western Melody, “ Joe Bowers.” Rested fully Dedicated to Thad. Stevens. O I’m a good old Rebel, Now that’s just what I am; For this “ Fair Land of Freedom ” I do not care at all; I’m glad I fit avainst it— I only wish we’d won— And I don’t want no*pardon For any thing I’ve done. I hates the Constitution, This great Republic, too; 1 hate the Freedmen’s Buro, In uniforms of blue; I hate the nasty eagle, With all his brags and fuss; . The lyin’ thievin’ "Yankees, 1 hates ’em wuss and wuss.' I hate the Yankee Nation, And every thing they do; I hate the Declaration Os Independence, too; I hates the glorious Union, ’Tis dripping with our blood— I hates the striped banner, I fit it all I could. I followed old Mass’ Robert For four year, near about; Got wounded in three placets, And starved at Pint Lookout: I cotch the roomatism A campin’ in the snow; But I killed a chance of Yankees — I’d like to kill some mo’. Three hundred thousand Yankees *• Is stiff in Southern dust; We got three hundred thousand, Beforo they conquered us; They died of Southern fever, And Southern steel and shot; I wish they was three millions Instead of what we got. I can’t take up my musket And fight ’em now no more; But I aint a going to love ’em, Now that is sarten sure; And I don’t want no pardon, For what I was and am; I won’t be reconstructed. And I don’t care a cent. Dalton. —The following is copied from the Cherokee Georgian : Ms. Editor; I have just finished taking the census of Dalton, and find the present popula tion to be 1,352, of which 990 are whites and 962 blacks. At the surrender the population was about 600. Tbe increase has been 752. Os this num ber about 225 are old returned citizens, and 527 new ones, which latter are of the very best class of people. Before tbe war Dalton had a population of about 2,000. She has not arrived at her old nnmber, but is rapidly doing so. Since the surrender over 80 new houses have been put up, at a cost of about $98,000, aud.old bouses have been repaired at an expense of about 130,000. This makes an aggregate of $128,000 spent on the town in solid improve ments. Os the new houses 39 are business bouses. Town lots have increased from 30 to 40 per cent, in value since the surrender. The trustees of the Georgia Memorial Asso ciation having selected Dalton as the place for the Confederate Cemetery, Gen. Duff. Green, with his usual generosity, tendered them that beautiful hill east ol Monument street and southeast of Col. Broyle’s, for said purpose, which has been accepted. The trustees and ladies of Datton design making it the ornament as well as the pride of the city. There are some three or four*thousand Confederates who are to have a resting place here. The prepara tion for so large a nnmber will involve the ex penditure of several thousand dollars. When the Dalton and Gadsden Railroad is completed, and the political condition of the country is settled, which will bring money iuto the country, Dalton, from her past two years’ improvement übder the most anverse circum stances, has a bright prospect ahead of her. J. N. B. Cobb, City Tax Collector. Important Surgical Operation—Success ful Removal of an Ovarian Tumor.— We have seen letters from Bcreven county, Georgia, which speak of the complete success of an operation' by our fellow townsman, Dr. Wm. G. Bulloch, tor an ovarian tumor which filled up the entire abdomen, one of the very first performed in this State, and from the infre quency of the operation, and fatality of such disease, is worthy of being made known to the public generally, and especially to that class of our fellow beings who are most interested, and the only sufferers from these kind ot com plaints. The lady is now perfectly well and re joices in the riddance of a tumor which had been gradually growing for the last ten years, and which resisting all the modes of treatment, is low by this operation cured, and rendered comfortable and happy. W e have good reason to believe that there is much suffering from similar diseases, and that many instead of con sulting and placing themselves In the hands of a sale and scientific surgeon at their own doors frequently make their way North and often fall into the hands of someone of more noto riety but less ability, and ofteu return (if they return at all) fleeced of money and health. For this reason apd many others which we could give, we think we are exensable for making this use of a letter which we have, seen by accident, and trust that Dr. Bulloch and the medical fraternity will so consider it.
