St, Patrick at Carrig-O-GtinnelL BY MISS MARY S. CONCANNON. [The legend of Beamon’s Candle, said to hare given a name to the“ Rock,” is a very famous legend! In ancient times a hut stood where the castle (Carrfg-o- Gunnelf) now stands, and the only dweller in it waa an old witch named Reamon. Every night a candle flung its gleams around the adjacent countrv; and whoever chanced to see it became a corpse before morning. Even to this day the peasant, when he passes it, after the sun is down, will turn his eyes in an opposite direction.— Halts Ireland ] God save us 1 ’twas in Ireland, The land of Saint and song, Saint Patriot [.God be with the days 1) Lived—honest man! so long, As meek as any snow-white lamb, An* as a lion sthrong! Ah. thin! a blessed Saint he was ! An* walked from door to door, Without a speck of dirty pride, Among the common poor. An* O, the wondrous miracles I Saint Patrick did them, sure! God save us I every miracle He did, was and >ne without A love of grandeur, or of power ; *Twas kindness all, no doubt. Ah* sure it was the blessed act That put the candle out l You know, thin in ould ancient times, Upon that Rock so gray, That overlooks the counthry round. Where Shannon’s waters p*ay» (May God be with the sun that lights Its lovely waves to-day!} Upon ttia Hock, where, dark and high Carrig o Gunnell stands, Once stood a hut o*erlooking all The lovely Limerick lands, An* Oratloe*s daik woods, that from for Wrung their despairing hands l Bad luck to Beamon l *iis herself Lived in that hut so small, An’ each night took her candle ont. Lit at the Devil’s call. The ug'y witch 1 her dirty light darkness for us &l!! For he who looked upon her light, (Bad Inek to her I) between The setting an’ the rising sun, (An’ what Ught would be seen At any other time than this ?) Right never move again 1 Ah thin 1 its many a fine goreoon (Ood rest their sowls 1 Amin!) That got a blink o’ Beamon’s light, An’ never spoke again I , O, heartß wor’ broke, an’ tears wor’ shed. O’er Beamon’s wicked sin! Ba[nt Patrick, dear, had other things To th riK of : so he stood Benighted, at a cabin door Hear Cratloe’s frowning wood: 11 Let a poor traveler in!” the Saint Says to the woman good 1 “ I would, an’ kindly welcome, sir, But for the dhread an’ fear Os Beamon’a Candle, which yo’l see Shines from the Rock so dear. Its ould I am, yet Life to me Is ewate an’ lovely, dear!” No word the Sa'nt (God bless him) spoke, Bnt fixed his holy eyes . Upon the Candle where it burned, Against ihe evening skies. That blessed minute It went out I An’ loud wor’ Beamon’s cries. Bo great her other , that it moved The country all around I The Shannon threw its waves on high— The lofty Carrig frowned; An’ Oratloe’s stormy branches bent Until they kissed the ground I Saint Patrick was too wise to lave An evil Sprite about; He bid It come out of the Witch; But ’tis beyond a donbt They e ula not live apart, an’ so Together they went out 1 No blame, thin to the Saint for that 1 With good Saint Peter’s kays He turned the Witch’s house into A place of prayer an’ praise, An’ holy monks an’ abbots thin Dwelt in it a 1 their days I An’ many asked the blessed Saint To name the place again; Bnt, No; the power of God,” says he, •* Through me has now been seen, Hock of the Candle it shall be, While Ireland still is green 1” An’ unforgotten still the tale, Fos io this very dat The pe <sant, passing after dark, Will turn his eyes away From Rook an’ Castle rnin'there, An' for protection pray I Bt. Louis, March It, 1869. A Girl’s Life. In Six Chapters. CHAPTBR I.—BARTBOOO. The dearest of dimples, the tiniest face, With a baby’s bewitching, inscrutable grace, Can we fancy just now she will go the whole pace,-' When her wee head has known seventeen sum mers t For now she’s a laugh and a kiss and a smile, Looking np at mamma with shy glance all the while; A coquette in her cradle she’,l sweetly beguile With a childish flirtation all comers. CHAPTER It.—SIRLHOOB. A gird—sweeter far for the shy little look, As she bends o’er a novel, or some lesson book, At some nice little boy, Ms her earliest “ fluke,” In a game that will end in her winning. Though cynical Byron might sneer at a girt Who enjoys bread and butter, the tiniest earl On her head can set young thoughts in amorous whirl, And the loves of a life are beginning. CHAPTER III.—KAIDRHHOOn. Grown older, she grows also sweet and serene, There’s a halo of love around pretty nineteen, And she mles o’er a court, an imperious queen, Whose commands are so pleasant to follow. Fair lady, I counsel yon, bring down your bird * While he sighs 'or a smile, while he hangs on a word, For a man’s heart, as, coubtiess, you often have heard, Is terribly vacant and hollow. OHAPTIR IV. — HATROSHOOD. You’re married,—now throw off the fltmay disguise, He'll look on you now with far and fferent eyes, And you’ll feign the politest, serencst surprise, If he ever expects wi’ety duty. What’s the use of a husband but ;his, so you’ll say, Just to hear all your whims, and to grin, and to pay, He’s a bore, too, sometimes, when be stops In the way Os a victory Woo by yoor beauty. OHAPTER V.—MOTHERHOOD. You’ve children 1 Ah, well I keep them safely up stairs, Let them play with the nursey tab'es and chairs, They're a source of annoyance and infinite cares, If onoe you begin any nursing. You've 100 many visits to make and receive, And you'va too many pleasures from rooming till vve, And you've 100 many halls, where you'll dance and deceive In a pan that needa little rehearsing. OMAPTKB VI —tag ago, Is lbs tale well nigh (old I lias the cod come at lasi, When the pleasures ami alas of your life are all put. And a ■emedilng Is creeping your heart rwtmd eo fast That you gasp far a breath I With stem faoe l,„ Chimes In who will sirlp ell lire Uaeel and gold, And your heasl Will aease psui faav will grow cold, And th« and and 'he dgfefet upon mu be rolled - And I etfh H jreyufsssar fa pies ’’ List of Acts Passed by the Last Legisla ture, which have Beoome Laws and of Resolutions wMoh have Received Execu tive Approval. Bnt it was expensive scratch ing for the telegraph company; and there, In deed, was the rub, for the bison* shook down miles of wire dally. A bright Idea struck somebody to send to Bt. Louis and Chicago for ail the brad-awls that could be purchased, and these were driven Into the poles with a view to wound the animals and cheek their rubbing Eropeuslty. Never was a greater mistake. The uffaloes were delighted. For the first time they came to the scratch sure of a sensation in tbelr thick bides that thrilled them from horn to tail. They wonld go fifteen mile# to find a brad-awl. They fought huge battles around the poles eoutlining them, and the victor would proudly climb the mountainous heap of rump and hnmp of the fallen, and scratch him self into blits ontil the brad-awl broke or the pole came down. There has been no demand for brad-awls from the Kansas region since the first invoice. The greatest enemy of this snake is an immense llzzird, five and six feet long. It Is said that when tbs snake succeeds In ofiscl ing a bite, the lizzard, rushing Into the woods, eats some herb, and returns to the conflict, which almost invariably terminates in its favor.
