COLUMBIAN CENTINEL. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4. » MARRIED , on Sunday evening, the j 81/i ultimo, by Jphn R. Brown, Esq. Mr. ! Robe nr R. Cox , /o MAs Eljzj Mol- j jo Lit, both of Franklin county. Savannah , January 26. Died, this morning Levi Sheftall, . esq. United States’ Agent, fur the state / of Georgia. An old and respectable in habitant and native of this city—leaving behind him a numerous family, by j whom, and many other relatives and acquaintances, his loss will be long and sensibly felt. On Tuesday last, in obedience t%gen eral orders, the military of this city pa raded for the purpose of furnishing the quota of ufflitia under the new requisi tion fur the service of the United States. About 40 of the number cf men requir ed of this regiment were obliged to be , drafted, as no volunteers would lie ac-1 ' copied from ihe ununifurm companies. { The Artillery, under capt. Wall; the j Guards, under capt. Marshall, and the. Hangers under capt. Ansley ; immerii- 1 airly on arriving on the ground, in aj most patriotic and handsome manner, volunteered their Services,to the colonel- ■ commandant, and were accepted. 1 lie ! Guards and Artillery were volunteers: also under the old requisition. January 27. Extract of alettir from a respectable cominer- j cial house in Bermuda, to their friends in i this city. The opportune:?! which they I j possess of acquiring the best information on I such subjects, should give much weight to i to their opinion of the destination of the Bri- j tisk forces, jast embarked for the VVest-In- ! dia sea*. “ Two American vessels, fully loaded i with provisions, were detained and scut ! in here lest week, by Ins Majesty's ship Atalante, and are under adjudication in the court of Vice Admiralty. They had no papers on board—for what other cause they were captured, is not known —Both are irom New-York. II your port-intercourse measures, (which, at the present crisis, we don’t think will be considered of sufficient provocation) should produce a war with Great-Bri lain there maybe some policy in it. “On the 24-it utt the 13th regiment embarked for the Barlmdoes, to co-ope rate with the forces there, (it is said) in the reduction of Martinique—3ooo troops have alsoembarkcl from Halifax, ; destined for the same purpose. So con- I fid cut arc we that this expedition (which will consist altogether ol upwards of 10,000 men) is togo against Martinique, and as confident of its success, that we are already induced to in kc prepara-j tiuns ! >r forming a commercial estab lishment there, in that event. “ No accommodation has as yet tak en place between the Governor and House of Assembly, who have been at vatir.nce, [as you are already informed] for some time past. The governor stili manager to delay the meeting of the Id mse, whose speaker' yet remains m gaol.” * ..**■■■ New York, January 14. | -V'-ws Reflected —A Spanish ship, in j a short passage from Cadiz, bound to J this port, has arrived at New-London, j JilMr. Lawrence, of this city, is on board, ■ and will probably reach town to-day. As he is a young gentleman of infor mation and veracity, what lie commu nicates, may be depended upon. We wait his arrival with anxiety. We are informed by a gentleman who left New-York on the 13th inst. that a • great number of vessels have lately left that port for the East Indies, Europe, the Wist Indies. See. The day before i he sailed Irom that city, there were nine 1 square-rigged vessels went to s- a, seven j ships and two brigs. Some of these I vessels have gone without clearances, j and others have cleared out in ballast, for other ports in the United States, and afterwards taken in cargoes from boats. The nine sail which went to sea on the i 12th, were m >stly h«den will) cotton, j lice and flax-seed. A number of vessels j had dropped down to Amboy, in Jersey, where they had taken clearances for Bos ton and other ports, in ballast, and af terwards received cargoes on board and proceeded to sea. J.a/i, Lorenzo Dow. —A report of the death of this celebrated nietho Ist npostle, in the Missisippi Territory, being in cir culation in the papers, it may gratify i his friends to be informed that he has preached in Hudson several times since lie is stated to have deceased. Hudson Lee. \ t j It is with pleasure we announce the ’determination of General MOREAU, the Hero of Hohenliden, to Deco me a citizen of this state. He has purchased an estate in Bucks county, and forward ed a petition to the legislature, praying that a law may be past to authorise him, 1 he being an Aiien, to receive a legal ti j tie. In a disputation, in presence of the su perior court at New-Orleans, between Mr. Grimes, district attorney for Or leans, and Judge Workman, the attor ney threw two inkstands full of ink at Judge Workman. Both the parties were fined and imprisoned by the court. Judge Workman had, in the interval between the battle and the commitment, privately challenged Grimes, who de clined the proposal. Co!. Troup,on Monday, in the course of his remarks on the expediency of fit ting out our frigates, which he adyocat- ; ed, after reading the letters from Sa- ; vann.ih in our last, (for which we were ! ! indebted to him) observed, that “ in I i addition to these facts, letteis had been | J received in the course of this morning, | j containing further particulars, which he j ! begged leave to stale to.the house. At- j ; i<-r the officer (commander of u British ; armed ve:- r t!) had been forced on board ' j ids Vi-s'L !, and whilst lying in our \vu ; ters ami within our jurisdiction, be had , fired several shots ?t pilot boats passing [ and re passing, had been very abusive, ! and threatened lb* town with what ire ■ culled vengeance , and in addition to ; these facts, letters had reached Savan- I riah from Liverpool, giving satisfactory | information that vessels of 1 j or 20 | guns had been fitted out for the purpose j of forcing n cotton trade with South Ca ! rolina and Georgia. This information | Mr. Tmup said came from imquestion- j able uuthoiity.” Jq’. Intel. j Georgetown, ( S. C.J Jan. 25. FIRE !—On Monday bst, between 2 and 3 o’clock, p. m. a fire broke cot in the range of Stores upon Bay-street, oe longiug to Mr. Solomon Cohen, and oc i cupied by Mr. Dowdney,cabiitet-rriakt r, and Mr. Phillips and Sursidus, mer chants. It is supposed to have, origin ated from the stove in Mr. Dowdncy’s apartment.. The citizens, being general ly at dinner, the fire was not discovered until it made considerable progress, & the wind being extremely high, and blowing directly upon a thick settled part of the I ! town, there appeared on the meeting of the citizens, but little prospect of sav ing it from a general conflagration ; but by the great exertions ol the citizens, j and many strangers who were present, and who deserve the thanks of the town i for their active assistance, the fire was prevented from doing any consider able injury, except to the range of stores in which it originated ; which were entirely consumed, with much val uable property. The loss is estimated at between 6 and 8000 dollars* During the conflagration, owing to a fortunate change of the wind, but two other build- ! ings took fire, o» the lower side of: the street. The other side w a% n‘>t I jso fortunate. Eleven buildings to- k j fire, and one of them at a great j distance. We notice with regret, tli t | Capt. Gorham Smith, who arrived here j | a few day 3 past, in making an exiraor- < I clinary exertion to reach the topof Zuill’s j Tavern, by the pillars of the balcony, j fell from the eves of the house to the phtf rm of the steps, owing to the shin gles giving way as he mounted the roof. We are happy to learn, that he receiv ed no very serious injury from the fall. Shocking to humanity l—A duel was ' fought on Monday the sth inst. between i ; lieutenant William Littlejohn «f the ar i my of the United States, and Dr. Pey ! ton, both natives of London county, Virginia—f night without second*. | The circumstances which gave rise to this unhappy affair, are of a nature too delicate for publication. 'Hie mo ment lieutenant Littlejohn received the information which gave rise to the mis understanding, he prepared i is pistols ; and rode in pursuit of doctor, (who i was that morning gone to the country, on a visit to one of his patients)—met him in the road, within one mile of j Leesburg, and immediately demanded j satisfaction. The doctor replied that j he would give him the satisfaction de manded, but requested permission to go i and see his family first, which request . was refused by the lieutenant, who de-{ dared most positively that if the doctor d.d not immediately accept one of the pistols, he would blow him through, j The doctor accepted one of the pistol*, they took their stand* at about 24 feet ; distance, the doctor’s pistol went off first j and missed the lieutenant, who then de liberately walked up to the doctor and shot him through the It-ft breast—the doctor expired in a few minutes. We are infjrmeti a jury was called, j who brought in a verdict of wilful mur der. Staunton Eagle. Mr. Weems has just published a new Life of Washington, which he calls hie firivutc life.
