Whilst these operations were carry
ing on against our right and centre, the
enemy advanced two very strong co
lumns against the front of our left posi
tion, and at the suvne •moment, a very
numerous corps of sharp shooters [vol
tigeurs] advanced under cover of the
howitzer sr. 1 four-pounder, and got pos
session cf a wood, which ascended from
the rend to within musket shot of the
right flank of the left position. This
obliged gen. I’iguma to throw back one
, or two battalions upon his right, to op
pose the enemy’s light infantry. Nu
thing could be more gallrnt or more or
derly, then the enemy's of this post;
he advanced in the greatest military re
gulaiitv, under a most tremendous fire.
The gallantly of the enemy’s attack
could only be equaled by the intrepidity
of the defence mads by the Ist division.
It is impossible for me to do justice to
the soldier-like < omluctof this division.
Attacked on their side by a very supe
rior force, and occasionally lirctl on by
t!ie howitz -r tiiu! four-pounder, they de
fended their post with determined obsti-

division was thus engaged, the enemy
kept up a heavy fire c i shot und sr.ell,
and sooir musketry [lroni the woods in
our front] on the centre *iivision and the
reserve. The guns were suppoitcd by
two very large olutmtSi and a disposa
ble reserve.
Nothing could exceed the soldier-like
steailmi.s# with which ihc4ili Uiuiaionlk
reserve remained on their post under
this heavy fire ; this courage will not be
wondered at when I mention that the
commander in chief himself, was at the
h ead of the centre division, animating
the soldiers by his presence and exam

general Make repaired, and placed his
horse on the very spot, displayed liis di

the enemy had received very great re
inforcements, and having been enabled j
by the assistance of his cannon [of;

movements. By eleven o’clock on the
night of the SOth October, the most
part of the troops arrived at Biiboa.
