Tilings Miscalled Amusements
The- pnj'irlnr arnttsvfneulH r>f the day
or<* gr.evnusly misnamed, 'i hey should
\u! riilled excitements. Tile Anglo Sax
ons and the fc\4ts, the races that give
character to our American civilization
sum! religion know little ot amusements
in its proper sense. It does not con
tent them. The- dance, lire evening
party, the card t ilde, the theatre and
opera, the race course, lli6 billiard sa
loon and the ten pid alley arc either in
their very' nature, or by their almost in
variable associations, Excitements of
the most unwholesome, inordinate and
pernicious sort. Such a party as that
g'ven by a prominent New England
.Representative in Wasbinglon last win
ter, when, after the usual gayeties and
feasting and drinking had extended to
one o’clock in the morning, we are told
“the German” was commenced and
kept up till near daybreak and the
whole was finished by a champagne
breakfast—could this be rightly called
nmuseweot ? By no means. It was a
piece of real business, of the hardest
and most trying nature, cruel to body
and soul, as severe a draft upon the
nerve-force as a forced march, or a to
tal route and pell-mell retreat ot an
army. Nay, we believe the downright
butchery of a battle-field is less barba
rous and more truly amusing than the
orgies of such a first-class all night par
ty at the Metropolis. Tire theatre is
olso the scene of wearying, demorali
zing, embruting excitement, more en
feebling and corrupting than a miasm.
The fierce passions, the gorgeous lewd
ness, the unmitigated seusuahty of
spectacle and costume and situation
and plot of the staple performances of
the drama, —what refreshment is there
in all this, what refreshment inde,d on
the Very crater of hell, inhaling the sul
phurous fumes of the pit? Men do
not go to those places for the innocent
and wholesome thing properly called
amusement, they go for excitement.—
They go not to be entertained, but to
be inflamed.
Bo in games, which of themselves are
iuooceat, and pure, as billiards ami nine
pins, (we cannot include cards, as the
element of chance enters too largely in
to the game) Americans are not c«>n
tdnt until, by connecting the excite
ments of betting, loss and gain of money,
and above all, drinks, with the piny,
they have fairly shut it on. of the list of
amusements and make it a snare to
character and possessions, a swill pack
to dissipation and ruin.
Amusement, relaxation, innocent gay
oty, hiliarity, sportiveness, is a gospel
duty. There is a time to laugh. Bui
it is one of the gravest mistakes of our
age and country, that it knows so little
of amusements, and has gone almost
exclusively into dissipation in their
steud. With that, the true Christian
plainly has nothing to do, but >o dis
countenance, and if the way is hedged
up against reformation, to withdraw
from it utterly. Dissipation is not
among things indifferent. Gay parties
lasting till past midnight, in wflieh ev
crybody is overdressed or undressed, in
vv hich dances handed down from those
of the children of Israel around the
Golden Gulf, are tho main attractions;
theatres,, operas and races, these are
not amusements, but gross abuses,' by
w hich, in the false guise ol amusement,
body and-soul are damaged, spiritually,
rendered impossible and our eternal
well-being put in jeopardy. Toward*
nil these, a Christian has but one sim
ple duty. Touch not, taste not, hand'e
not. Come out from among them a. and
be ye separate, saith the Lord, and
touch not tho unclean thing. —American
Presbyterian.
Rigor for Young Life-
Lite is an cnrnost buttle. It is nu
triflo to have a nature fearful and won
derJ'ully made—strong desires that must
be regulated, enormous exposures that
must bo avoided, fatal urodivitios that
must be resisted and overcome. And
therefore it is that vve so much need
that early training, that early discipline
which it is hard to see whether parent.-
and governors are more slow to apply
or children and youth more reluctant to
receive. Lot the fault lie where it will,
it is a fatal fault. Success, usefulness,
virtue, happiness, peace, salvation, heav
en—all depend upon onr entering life
fitly armed in euitab’e harness; with
proper convictions as to what the expo
sures, dangers and temptations of bodv
and soul are, and with such settled rules,
habits and principles, such h training
conscience, such an established rover
ence for God and duty, as must deprive
the world of all its power to deceive and
betray.
Those of ns who arc parents should
remember that it is we who put the har
ness on our children. They don’t gird
themselves. It is we, then, who are
ma'idy responsible for its strength, its
loose, ill-fitting character. In our ten
rit-rnces wo refuse to draw the buckles
where they vviil hold, and if the sho ,1-
dor chafes or redd..: “» ever so little with
the f rap, we are the ' «t to remove it.
We arc sorry to think that the young
must contract its inspirations beneath
so sturdy a coat. We lift the sandals
an plead for the feet that lira to press
their ruUgh seams ; but where are our
recollections that we do nnt think of the
sharpness of the spear that that heavy
corselet i-i to resist; the weight of t|ie
battle- ixe that leathern head piece is to
annul, the roughness of the hard
road those stout shoes are to make
smooth ? It is not because of the len
derness of the flesh that we need our
leathern mail, and are we to dread our
armor mine thau our enemy ? This is
lice miscalculation of life; the sacrifice
of our lifelong safety to our immediate
convenience; of onr whole usefulness
and honor and triumph as men and wo
men to onr short season of carelessness,
self indulgent, negligent happiness, anu
freedom from self-imposed restarint as
boys and girls, young men and maidens.
The Suez Canal Opening— Suez, No
vnnber 21, via Alexandria. —The iuaugu
ration fleet has arrived here. None
were obliged to employ pilots ; the only
difficulty experienced was in conse
quence of the numbers. Some crowded
upon tho banks, but got off without
trouble, the sandy bottom neiiher hol
ding nor hurting them. On leaving
Ismalin, several steamers fouled with
each other, but with no serious damage.
Tho water in the canal between this
place and Ismalia is twenty feet at its
shallowest point; these points can easi
ly be deepened. Steamers drawing fif
teen feet can navigate the canal from
Port Said to 8m z with ease, in fifteen
hours. The wnte' docs not wash a.way
the banks, as much as apprehended.—
r J he complete success of the great work
escetds all expectation. Tho canal is
now clear of shipping, the entire fleet
having anchored in the harbor of Suez.
On I huisduy the fleet will start on its
return. The Empress Eugine returns
through the canal with the fleet, her
yacht, the Aiglo, taking the lead.

NOTICE. .
DURING my contemplated absence to Louisi
ana or out West, I have made Col. H H
Jones, Cuthbert, Ga., my legal agent.
- F, J. RAGLAND.
A CARD TO THE AFFLICTED,
Dr. M. L. LICHTENSTADT, a resident of Georgia for 21 years, begs leave to
tender his services to the citizens of Randolph and adjoining counties, for the treatment of all
Chror ic Di-eases. but especially those of a Nervous character, such as Neuralgia ©f th. 6
Face and Head, as we h as Sciatica, or paiDS in the Ifip, Joints, Thighs, Knees a(d Ancles.
This method of treating disease in its various forms, by external applications, wasjintroduced
by meia this State, in 1865,up0n my re*urn from Europe, and is, comparatively speaking, a
new one, but has been already sufficiently tested In various parts of this State, to for It
hosts of friends, especially amongst the mativ 1 patients whose.sufferings have been vwmptly aud
PERMANENTLY cured by means of the Biometer.”
I have speedily restored those who suffered from the b’ighting disease of Paralysis, and have
had the gratification to see the return of health in the victims of Epileptic convulsion*, whose
cases have been repeatedly pronounced incurable, by competent authorities.
Gout and Rheumatism yield- to this treatment with wonderful promptness, and sot less re
markable in the fact that all skin diseases, by whatever technical name they may be designated,
have to succumb to my system external medication.
My Certificates, which, amongst others, bear the names of eminent citizens of thisiState and
Alabama, will be distributed by mail, or can be had upon application to me. A patiqut perusal
of the same is solicited.
Until further notice I can be found at the Hotel in Cuthbert, dn CVery
Wednesday and Tfllirsday, of each week, and hope to secute the ap
probation of those who may need my services.
Liberty Hall, Grawfokesvili.e, Ga,, Sept'. 14®, 186!).
I think it proper to state to all who have no experience in the Needle Treatment, as practiced
by Dr M. L. Li-htenstadt, and who desire information upon the subject, that I hake tried it
and think well of it. It has. within my knowledge, in some cases, effected almost marvelous results. It
was the first thing that gave me relief from the most, agonizing pains, after intense severing for
two days from a serious injury in the hip. From this hurt lain not yet restored—am still una
ble to walk—the injury was received more than eight months ago. I have, during (hat time,
resoited to many remedies—none have been effectual, and.none that T have tried seem to have
been more beneficial than the use of the Biometer. It gave me the first relief from intense pain,
and under its continued occasional application, the genenl tone of the nervous systoin, which
was so shocked by the hurt, has been greatly improved. This is my opinion of the effects of
this treatment on myself. In other east’s within rnv knowledge, its effects have been. as I have
stated, almost marvelous. These cases were Chronic Rheiynatism.
Dr. Liebtenstadt I have found to be a man of education, of urbanity and amenity of manners
and in all respects deserving the consideration due to a gentleman.
ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS.
SrARTA, Ga., June 2ls| ISG9.
I certify, that under the treatment of Dr. M. L. I.icmF.NSTAiiT, my wife has been wry greatly
benefitted. For years she has been a frequent and«gi eat sufferer from Nervous Heoilaches. but
sinc3 his second visit, now more than two mouths ago. she has not had an attack of this painful
and prostrating disease, and her general health lias greatly improved.
I do unhesitatingly and earnestly recouitneud h's practice to all sufferers from Nervous af
fections. * , CHARLES W. .DqBCSE.

Waruentox, Ga., September 3, f ISG9.
Dr. M. L. Lichtenstadt — Dear Sir : I consider it a sacred fluty to render yog
my sincere acknowledgements for the marvelous cure you have effected in my
Niece’s case, who has been afflicted with EPILEPTIC FITS, in its v:orst form,
for about twenty years, and will only mention that my object in renderirjf you thiai
elaborate statement is to < all the attention of all sufferers, who are similarly af
flicted, to your method of treatment, and to beg them to lay aside their prejudices,
to try your skill, and be* cured like my niece has been. •* j.
A brief outline of tin’s distressing case, will suffice : My niece, Miss Sarah
Gross, has lived with me from her infancy, and when about 14 years old, she was
quite suddenly attacked with spasmodic affections, which constantly and gradu
ally grew worse in spite of the best medical attention, until the spasms turned in
to Epileptic Convulsions, returning upon the poor victim at shorter intervals,
making her a wreck i body, and seriously affecting her mind. The family, du
ring all these long years, lias spared neither money nor pains to have a cure ef
fected. And when the skill of our local physicians hud been oxhaustedjwe con
cluded to try the science of professional men of Augusta, Ga:, but all proved ut
ter failures, and of the fifteen physicians, under whose treatment she has been for
the last twenty years, not one was able to check- the ravages of this dreadful
disease.
When you came to our village, and promised us a cure, I confess that my con
fidence in its success was very small indeed, but I am now thankful to an Allwise
Providence for the happy deliverance, and am anxious that others whh are simi
larly afflicted in their families, should be made acquainted with all the facts, and
at least give you a trial. • If they do, I am sure they will bless the day, and thauk
me for this statement.
It may appear strange lo every one, to learn that, although my niece lias had
from three to eight Epileptic Convulsions a week, for a period of nearly twenty
years, accompanied by excruciating headaches, that your remedy should be able
to cause a visible improvement from the start, but such is nevertheless, the case,
and can be substantiated by all the neighbors in our settlement- You began your
treatment early in February, and improvement was evident after the second treat
ment. Her fils were getting milder and milder, arid since the 13th day of last
March, she has not had any tits nor symptoms. Her mind is now 7 as goid as ever
it was before her first attack, and she is not only able to take care pf herself,
which she could not do before, but she is competent to perform a grdat marry do
mestic duties, and undergoes a good many fatigues.
I hope aryl trust Doctor, that you may continue in your successes, relieving the
afflicted, and remain, gratefully, your friend, Mrs. SARAH Ej HILL.
Sparta. Ga., June 15tji, 1869.
Dr. Liciitekptadt — Dear Sir: In appreciation of yocr new method-of treating disease. I
cbeertully bear testimony to its great efficacy in relieving suffeur.g whenever properly applied
and persistently continued.
My wife has lor some years complained of'unplensant. sensation, and has offer,’ felt sudden
pai*s about the heart. Ibis was not continuous, but occurred at any time, even when she was
seemingly well. Early in January last,, the began to experience much excited notion of the'
heart, and the whole arterial svsiem, accompanied with great nervous excitement, which daily
increased, distressing and weakening h”r very much, until about tlie middle of February, when
she had become completely prostratid, both in body and mind. 1 culled in a tardily Physician,
a man of skill and science, but she 'continued to grow worse, until I began to disjiair, and con
sidered her case almost hopeless. Hearing of your trea!merit, 1 prevailed upon btr to have you
called in. She consented with gieat reluctance, and only to gratify me, but the result lias been
remarkable. Your first visit was in April Pith. vbui she was so feeble that she had to rest
three times during a very slight application of your remedy. I ouM see that she improved
after every application, and after the fourth treatment her convalescence became evident to all.
for she began to v, alk without as-isiance, aid could take Some nourishment, which increased hei
strength rapidly. She has now been under your treatment two months, and although she is
not entirely well, and perhaps may never be in perfect health again, yet she is eo much im
pioved ns to be able to ride and walk about with much comfort to herself, and car attend to
many of her domestic duties. Her appetite and digosflou are good, aud her sleep greatly im
proved.
With many thanks to you for your succe sfu! treatment (und-’r a kind Providence) of her case,
and sincere good wishes for your professional success, lain, with respects, yours,
WM. FRALEY.
