The Wild Men of Arizona.
Noar the hxUe wliorcin we were
quartered Wfts tire topee, or wig
wam, of a venerable looking medi
cine man, who, having ascertained
that we belonged to the same pro
session, manifested a stoical but un
mistakable interest in our welfare.
An opportunity soon occurring, we
exercised a bad spirit from the liv
er of a young chief. In short we
checked a severe attack of chills and
fever, but it still remains a mystery
to that grayheaded savant why the
blue pills produced the effect, for
he evidently mistook them for
buckshot. lie was surprised at this
novel manner of administering
them. If he adopts our practice
the bowels of his people will in
truth be heavy, and will yearn to
ward the medicine man. It was
from this venerable man that we
learned through our interpreter the
cause of the bitter and unrelenting
cmnity towards all white men.—
Thus tlu? : legend runs ?
Many winters ago I ho young men
of the tribe who had been to the
Southward brought hack strange
talcs from the tribes which lived
up?>n {W great salt water. Large
vessels with white and wide-spread
skins above them had appeared, and
they were filled with white men
who wove long knives and shining
breast platas, dug in the ground
and washed the earth in search of
yellow lumps. As the months wore
on stories came of great cruelties
practiced by these men upon all
who offended them, and naught
wdtild satisfy them but gold. Soon
a message came that the strangers
would visit the tribe for the pur
pose of bestowing upon them valua
ble presents in return for the privi
lege of parsing through their conn
fry. The of meeting was in
tire bend of a deep narrow valley,
where the rocks formed a natural
ampbitcatre, and at the appointed
day the tribe to a man, proceeded
to the place with their women and
their young. The strangers had
already arrived, and vast piles of
the promised gifts lay covered with
a canvass.
The Indians were instructed to
gather in a dense ma-s at a particu
lar point, while the wonderful
strangers, with banners streaming,
trumpets braying, and armor flash
ing back sunlight, formed a scene
not soon to be torgotten by tliesim
pic red men. The medicine men of
the whites, in long, flowing robes,
with crosses and other emblems,
performed some strange and mys
terious rites. Butin an instant all j
was changed. At a given signal a
dead silence prevailed. The can- ;
vass was snatched from its place re
vealing iron tubes on wheels.—
Again the trumpets gi .-untied, and
thunders and lightnings and sulphu
rous flames filled the valley. The
dead and dying filled the air with
shrieks and and ies which no cannon
nor musketry nor trumpet could
drown. Then came the charge of |
horsemen with their swords cleav
ing through ihe eagle’s feathers and
sainted scalp-look, and thepikemen
finished the work of butchery. But
few of the tribe escaped, and they
fleeing to the mountains nourished
the memory of this inhuman wrong.
As the tribe increased slowly with
the years, the story was told to the j
children, and deep in their heart of i
hearts was planted a desire for von
gcanec, and in their weak way, at
every season, time and place, have
they visited the punishment upon
their traditionary enemies and with
what measure they meted, so has it
been measured unto them again.—
Such is the legend, as we heard it,
and the flashing eyes of the “old
man eloquent” told how well he
had learned the lesson. Doubtless
it has much of truth in its origin.
The Spanish invader believed in
compulsory civilization and ixein
nlified his creed upon all ohcarsions. j
Tradition says that this army never i
returned to their vessels, internal
disseiitions divided them into
hands, disease attacked them, and
the natives completed at the stake
the work of extermination.
Temperance lecturers and writers
on the evil of intemperance will
find ample material for essays in
the report of Mr. Edward Young,
Chief of the Bureau of Statistics.
He estimates from the data in his
possession the cost of the liquor
consumed in the United States dur
ing the last fiscal year at six hun
dred millions of dollars ! Os course,
as the report says, all assertions as
to the cost of liquors consumed be
ing sufficient to pay oft the national
debt were reckless exaggerations ;
hut the trustworthy figures given
are sufficiently startling even with
out the ingenious estimates of the
miles of wagon loads of flour or
acres of bank notes which they rep
resent, with which the statement of
Dr. Y'ojing is garnished. The in
formatiou that the influx bf Chi
nese to this country lias caused an
annual consumption of $1,926,915
worth of prepared opium suggests
an additional point, which is that
this despised race pays the $963,457
per year ak duty on the drug, or
one-half the net first cost of the ar
ticle.
Bleeding at the Jsosk. — Some
two years ago while going down
Broadway, in New York, blood
commenced running from my nose
quite freely. I stepped add and ap- I
plied my handkerchief, intending
to repair to the nearest hotel, when
a gentleman accosted me, saying:
“Just put a piece of paper in your
mouth, chew it rapidly, and it will
stop your nose bleeding.” Thank
ing him,.,rather doubtfully I did as
lie suggested, and the flow of blood
ceased almost immediately. I have
seen the remedy tried since quite
frequently, and always with suc
cess.
Twenty-three thousand persons
have left Strasbourg to settle in
France, Switzerland and America.
The Pittsburg Commercial thinks
the peach crop lias realized to the
State of Delaware this year very
nearly a million and a half of dol
lars. !
A Foob Bov.—Don’t be ashamed,
my lad, if you have a natch on your
elbow. It is no mark'of disgrace.
It speaks well of your industrious,
mother. For our part, we would
rather see a dozen patches on your
jacket than hear one vulgar or pro
fane word from your lips; No good
boy will shun 3*oll because you can
not dress as well ns your compan
ions : and if a bad boy sometimes
laughs at your apj earanee, sayrtioth
ing, ni) r lad, but walk on. W e
know many a rich and good man
who was once as poor as you.—
There is our next floor neighbor, in
particular, now one of our wealthy
men, who told me a short time
since that when he was a ehild he
was glad to receive the cold pota
toes from his neighbors’ tabic.—
