It is a remarkable fact that while in the Southern and lower latitudes of the Union an unprecedented quantity of rain has fallen during the past two months, and large sec tions of country have been inunda ted, causing serious injury to the crops, au extraordinary drought has prevailed in the Northwest, where large areas of country are involved in one vast conflagration. There seems to have been some dis turbance of the elementary equilib rium affecting the meteorological phenomena, and preventing the uni form distribution of the rain dis pensing vapors, so that while we ot the South Atlantic Sea board have had an excess of rain, an area em bracing portions of the States of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and lowa has had scarcely any rain dur ing several mapThs. Elsewhere we publish a telegraphic account of the fearful ravages of the great fires in Wisconsin, where the flames have extended over some three thousand square miles of territory, destroying crops, dwellings, fences, timber, animal, and human life. Our dispatch says : “A heavy rain alone can stop the conflagration— the country is as dry as tinder.”— News. Rev. W. P. Harrison, D. D. — The last number of the New Month ly Magazine contains a letter from the Rev. W. P. Harrison to the members of the Book Committee, in which he tenders his resignation as editor of that periodical, on the ground that his failing health and the difficulties in the way of the publication of that periodical ren der it necessary for him to resign. He desires again to return to the work of the ministry in his own conference. The cars at Dawson recently cut off one of the ears of an aged color ed female. It was a right close shave. THj CUTHBERT APPEAL. Home Affairs. Money at 7 per cent.—Sec advertisement. ■sea- The bird crop in this section is very large, and pointer dogs are at a premium. 7p&~ Several articles, among them two clever poems, are necessarily crowded out. E. McDonald is building a large store house on the corner of his warehouse lot on Depot street. £3£jr* We hear considerable complaint of the condition of the streets in the Southeast ern portion of the city. An improved lot of land near Ward’s Station is offered for sale at a bargain, by Elam Christian, Agent. See advertisement. f3T" Trade is looking up a little. Large stocks are being received by oar merchants in every branch of trade. Yesterday morning we had a touch of winter, and the walking barometer of our city predicts frost this morning. Mr. J. McK. Gunn returned from his fall trip to the eastern market l : last Saturday. He lets our readers know what he bought while absent. The meeting of the Agricultural So ciety, last Saturday was very sliraly attended. It is painful to note the small degree of in terest manifested by our farming friends in matters of such importance to them. Hooking.— One of the most scientific *' hookists ” we ever hoard of visited our city last week, and left two clerks, who slept in stores comfortless. The windows were left up, and bars nailed ncross them, to keep on* thieves; but this fellow evidently stole a march on them by nr ana of a pole with a hook on it, and successfully fished out what he wanted. Cotton. —Cotton still comes in at a slow rate; although the receipts of past week were the largest of the season. Priccsranged during the week from 15 to 17 1-4. Yester day prices were off a litte, and very little cotton was offered for sale. artistic friend, Allen F. Hall, is in the field for the fail campaign. This is fine weather for taking pictures ; and now is a good time to give him a call. ITe will give you any style of picture desired,; t low pliers. Now Ain't They I’rkttt !—Our lady friends will find it very interesting to look through the handsome stock of millinery goods, furs. Ac., now offered by Mrs. E. Gib son. She offers the choicest furs, at remark ably low prices ; and an cndle-s variety of collars, cuffs, ribbons, corsets, handkerchiefs, and all the little fancy doings that go to “set olF’ our loved ones. Ota S.mitiuT Night. —This is the title of a very handsome eight-page paper, recent ly startled at Macon, by Messrs. Lines, Wing A Smith—three practical printers, and work ing m n. The first numbers make a very favorable impression, and we think it is des tined to he one of the most popular literary publications of the State. Success to you. gentlemen. Chance fob a Bargain.— -Dr. A.I. Pol lock offers his farm near Coleman’s Station for sale through our advertising columns this week. It is a very desirable place, conven ient to churches, schools, stores, Ac., and is a splendid ocation for a practicing physician there being none nearer than Cotton Ilill or Fort Gaines. Read the doctor's advertise ment. Still on the Market.— Mr. A. F. More land called on us the other day. lie informs us that his three splendid planta ions adver terieed in the Appeal, arc still on the market, and that he is determined to sell. Parties wishing to buy good places, with splendid accommodations for th ■ family, will find it to their interest to consult with Mr. Moreland. Such places are not often placed upon the market. Goon Timclars.— The Good Templars' Lodge in this city, is now in a flourishing condition. A considerable number have joined recently; and we hope to see the num ber increased from week to week, till the number reaches what it ought to be. The Cold Water Templars are also doing a good work, and the liffle* fellows enjoy their weekly Saturday evening meetings hugely. Rural Southerner.— The publishers of this excellent monthly are determined that it shall command a place in the front ranks of agricultural journals. The October number which lies before us is, itself worth the yearly sub-enption of one dollar. In connection with its usual interesting correspondence and editorial miscellany, illustrations become, in future, a striking feature} of ils publication. If is a live, practical, progressive journal, and furnishes more for the money than any monthly in the country. Published in At lanta atone dollar per annum. Returned.— Our friend J.S. Anthony, re. turned from New York last week. lie bought while absent a very large stock of Hardware and Housefurnisking goods of all kinds, with which be proposes to 911 the counters and shelves of the new aud magnificent, store room just being finished up for him in Stand ley’s new rock building. His stock of stoves is by far the largest ever brought to Cuthbert; while his supplies of everything else in his line will always be kept lull and complete. We copy from the “• News,” the following notice of a useful citizen, of Eufaula : Coi.. Thomas J Fkrkixs, has returned from his annual business trip to the Northern anil Eastern cities, and a visit to his relatives in Tennessee. He looks much improved iu health, and is ready to renew his shipping business with his planting friends. His houses have large experience, and world-wide reputations, and we know their capital amounts to millions of dollars, and they can hold cotton for any length of time. Col. Perkins has had long ex perience in the cotton business, and has resi ded in Eufaula for six or seven years, and is well known as one of the most quiet, straight forward and honorable business men we have ever had among us, aud as hie plan for ship ping cotton shows a large gain to the planters, we have no doubt that his business will in crease from yaar to year. He is also a pur chaser of cotton for account of American and English spinners aud is one of onr most liberal buyers. We cannot have too many such men. and we wish him success. Cotton. —The following were the reported prices by telegraph Wednes day night. Macon, Hi. New York, 19$. Savannah 18?. Jones «Jfc Fort. —The Senior of this firm returned to bis home last week, after an ex. tended sojourn in New York, Baltimore, and ether guod markets, where he purchased a magnificent stock for the handsome new rock store now occupied by this enterprising firm. Our friend, Fort, who has recently embark ed ill this house, seems perfectly at home be hind the counter, and has a smile, a kind word and—a bargain to offer every visitor He is a thorough business man—polite, ener getic. obliging, liberal —and is destined to make one of the most popular aud successful merchants of our city. • Our old reliable friend, Rev. J. B. Ward law, is always at his post, and ready to give better bargains than ever to his hosts of friends ; while Col. Goodall, the clever little youth, w ho never lets even crusty old bache lors leave him without a laugh—is as ready as ever to play the agreeable. The house is ready, in every particular, to receive and supply their many old cn tomere. and make lasting friends and cits' turners of all who will call and try them. See their advertisement. Fashion Items. Large loose trousers are coming in fashion again. The gypsy shape in bonnets is preferred to any other this season. Collars for open dresses are made of plain muslin with embroidered edge. White tarlatan, worn over cerise silks, is very popular for evening toilets. Large bends of frosted silver and of carved tortoise shell, are now worn as necklaces The new s’.yle of lace veil is heavily cm. broidered around the edge with floss aud beads. Jet will be much worn this winter, both for ornaments and in passmenterie trim ming. Black martin and sable furs will be used for trimming sLk and velvet costumes this winter. Honiton lace is used on all kinds of dress es, and lias a most beautiful effect on light evening silks. Crintsnn silk or satin velvet are very ele gant worn with a black silk dress tor dinner dress or houseeostume. Handkerchiefs for gentlemen with colored borders, are the mode ; some are worn having dark brown centres. Anew lace is meeting with much favor. It is called den telle laine. is made of wool and is manufactured in Belgium. Double capes of gray and tan-colored cloth trimmed with embroidery and fringe a shade darker, are very stylish for fall wear. Bonnets have attained to a size this winter quite visible to the “ unclothed eye.” The Cottage shape appears to be the favorite. All dresses are now made slightly trained, hut on the street they are to be looped up so as to clear the ground by at least an inch. The handsomest neckties this season are of raw silk, ornamented by a double row of bell shaped tassels of a pretty contrasting color. Suits of dark cloth trimmed with bias folds of silk and fringe will be the most popular street costume lor the morning walk aud shopping expedition. Gauze veils are much worn, as well as the new style—a large square piece cf plain black net. with deep hem above, which is let in apiece of black lace insertion. Ornaments or the hair are beetles, biTtter flies, and snails, made of small, gray-colored feathers, fastened in the centre of a large ribbon bow. with three long ends. The Sub-Treasury at Chicago lost $2,000,.000, of which $500,000 was in gold. Savannah Repuislican Foe Sale. —The Savannah Republican is offered for sale by its proprietor. The Republican is too well known as a journal of character and influ ence to need extended commenda tion.
