Sanctioned.— The maxim that the voice of the people is the voice of the divinity, may in some oasis, be ■open to doubt, but the testimony of honest and enlightened witnesses extending through a series of years, and all to the same purport, is worthy of credence, admits of no question. Upon such testimony the reputation of Hos tetter’s Stomach Bitters as an antidote and cure for many ailments is based. During the tweuty years that it has been before the world, innumerable preparations intended to compete with it, have gone like rockets, and come down the extinguished sticks. Mean while the progress of that incomparable tonic lias been swift and steady—always upward mid onward like the eagle’s flight. Its intro duction produced a revolution in therapeutics, .And it proved to be one of those salutary rev -olutioiis that cannot go backwards To-day Hostetler’s Bitters is one ol the most popular remedies in Christendom, and commands a larger sale than any other medicinal prepara tion. domestic or imported, on this side of the Atlantic. Asa cure for dyspepsia, bilious disorders, nervousi.fT ctions, geuciai debility, and as a preventive of epidemic fevers, it takes prtCedence of every other remedy. This fact should teach the amtii'ious country dealers who endeavor to foist their loeal abor tions on the public in its stead, how finite their small attempts to cajole the community must necessarily be. Where the game fish have failed there is no chance for the “ suck ers.” A snakk, said to have been at least five feet long, and as thick as n man’s wrist, was killed in the la dies’ car of the train going from Nashville to Chatauooga, near that place last Monday night. The rep tile was discovered crawling along the aisle, aud created a terrible sen sation among the female persuasion before he was dispatched. THE CUTHBERT APPEAL, Home Affairs. After a long spell of disagreeable cloudy weather, we are now enjoying de lightful fall weather. We hear of a great many of our citi zens making preparations to attend the Elate Fair, which opens on Monday. Fine Potatoes.—Our friend, Wm. Irvine, has left at this office some of the finest sweet potatoes we have seen this year. His crop is splendid. A. B. McAfee offers some valuable property in Cnthbert, and a plantation a few miles out, for sale, through our advertising c 'olumns. The thieves in these parts must ex pect to change their business shortly and go to work. They are supplying themselves with axes, boes, spades, etc. The cigars we have been testing for Jones & Fort, are delightful. If you would enjoy a good smoke, at a small cost, cal! on Jones and Fort. Sot.D.—Some two hundred people were badly sold at the Baptist Church last Monday night, by a travelling humbug with a few poorly gotten tip pictures. TtSS* A considerable number of hands have embarked from this point recently to work on the Blakely extension of the South western Railroad. We learn that work is progeseing vapidly. We und< rstand two of onr enterpris ing planters nre going to have a show of sweet potatoes at the Court House, o n Wednesday of the first week of Randolph Su perior Court. “ Smali potatoes ” will have a poor showing, you b-1. tW" “ Send the little ones happy to bed.” and the best way to accomplish this is to go by Gillespie's, and get a pretty toy or something good in the confectionary line. If yon want to send the old one3 happy to lied, get a bot tle of that old Whiskey, and the thing’s did. Tiie County Jaii..—This institution is well patronized, having n’neteen inmates. Em braced in this number are two females—one white and one black. Os the men there are twelve black and five white. Th-cc of the men arc from Terrell county. Leaving.—The large force of Messrs. Lions A McT emlon. which has been engaged on the Bainbridge, Cuthbert & Columbus Railroad for sometime, passed through this city on Monday. They go to work on the Grifin A Madison Railroad. We learn that the force of Col. Griffin, re cently on the B. .t A. Rond, will i#o pro ceed at once to Griffin to work on the Griffin & Madison Road. Our Rui.koais.— The work on (he entire line of the Bainbridge. Cuthbert & Columbus Railroad was suspended last week. Various rumors are afloat ns to the cause, and it is difficult to ascertain Hie facts in the case. Up to this time the Brunswick and Albany Rond is progressing satisfactorily. We learn the track is being laid from Albany in this direction. The trains are running between Brunswick and Albany, and the road is pro nounced very good. Demorest’s Monthly for November presents ns with a full aud varied choice of Winter Fashions, so essential to our climate and the tastes of the ladies. The present is sue has its usual variety of Music, Literature. Household, and other useful articles, and the new list of Premiums for 1872. The terms for clubs are very liberal, and should be ex amined by ail who require—anil who does not ?—a family magazine. $3.00 per year. Published at 838 Broadway, New York. Jon Printing.— We invite the business men of Cuthbert. and the surrounding SJouth west Georgia towns, to call aud examine our specimens of Job Printing. We guarantee satisfaction in every instance ; and many business men who have been having their work (lone at other places, are perfectly sur prised at the low prices of our work. Send us your orders for Letter Heads. Bill Heads, Cards. Circulars, Posters, or any kind of printing desired. Removed to Macon—Col. 11. 11. Jones, formerly editor of this paper, and now one ol the editors and proprietors of the Macon Telegraph and Messenger, left with his fam ily on Wednesday morning for their new home. Col. Jones is a citizen which our city can ill afford to part with. He was always alive to tiie material welfare of the community end was always found in the lead in public enterprises, lie leaves a vacancy in busi ness, social and church circles which will be felt for a long time ; and the good wishes and servant prayers of many an honest heart go with him, his amiable wife and courteous, lovely children, to their new field. We congratulate Macon upon this valua ble acquisition to her citizenship, and heart ily wish for the Colonel a full fruition of his brightest hopes in all the relations of life. Business. — Despite tlie prevailing com plaint of hard times and money stringency, our merchants seem to be driving a pretty fairtrade. Those enterprising shrewd busi ness men who know from experience, the value of libera! advertising in the home pa per, arc, ol course, having the largest share of the trade, as they should. Some of our merchants have not yet got their stocks quite in order, but will have their names in the Ap. peal in a short time, and let the public know what they propose to do. There are some close fisted squatters, who have uo interests in thocommunity, except their goods— whose plan is to make every cent they possibly can out of our people, and then bundle up and go to bleed some other community.— They never patronize home papers, schools, or anything else, are worthless to the commu nity, and should not receive the patronage of people who wish for the prosperity of our city and county. They are draluing the purses of the people, making money scarce, without building up or improving anything but their own pile of greenbacks. On the othei hand, there are merchants in Cuthbert, who are ahv .ys alive to the inter ests of the city—who build up and improve onr educational advantages—who foster and neourage onr home newspaper—the mouth piece of the community and the index by which people a distance judge our country and our people. They do not palm off rot ten and worthless goods on the plea of cheap ness, because they expect to remain here— they hope for future patronage from our peo ple, and know the people have a means of redress. It is not wonderful that liberal advertisers prosper, and we are rejoiced to see our adver tising patrons, outstripping others in business prosperity. Since the business seasou has opened, we expect in a short time, to have the business of all our enterprising and deserving bome piPtchants, represented in these columns. Jurors. The Campaign Opened. A Washington dispatch of the 181 h says : The President, by proclamation, suspends the habeas corpus in the following South Carolina districts : Spartanburg, York, Marion, Ches ter, Laurens, Newberry, Fairfield, Lancaster and Chesterfield. The suspension extends to all arrests by the United States Marshal, his dep uties, and Federal officers, soldiers or citizens acting under the orders of said marshal, his deputies or a military officer. Rev. F. M. Daniel.— The last issue of the Newnan Herald says ; This divine, formerly pastor of the Baptist Church of this city, lately of the Cuthbert Baptist Church, was recently chosen pastor of the Fourth Baptist Church of Atlanta. When the good man and his family arrived to take posses sion of their new home, they found, greatly to their surprise, that the female members ot bis flock bad furnished the parlor in neat and tasty style, supplied their table with a prepared meal, and placed a stove and many other serviceable articles in their proper places. The news of Mr. Daniel s flatter ing reception was highly gratifying to his many friends in this city. We feel that he is worthy of such a flock, and his Church deserves such a good and working pastor as Mr. Daniel is known to be. Deaf, Dumb, Blind and Insane. —From statistics obtained at the census office, it appears that the to tal number of blind persons in the United States is 20,320, of which 96 are blind also deaf and dumb ; 75 blind and insane; 105 blind and idiotic; 7 blind, deaf, dumb and in sane, and ll blind, deaf, dumb and idiotic. The number of deaf and dumb is 15,892, including 59 deaf, dumb and insane, and 140 deaf, dumb and idiotic. There are 36,- 629 persons-who are simply insane, and 24,271 simply idiotic. C ai:s for B. & A. R. R.—Four fine Passenger coaches and a bag gage car for rived at the rleppfe of the Macon & Brunsaiick Railroad on Monday night last. The ears are all neat, elegant and comfortable, and will compare favorably with ar.y run ning on American roads. Regular passenger trains will, we presume, soon be running between Brunswick and Albany and we expect soon to see numbers of the Albanians on a visit to our city. —Brvnsicick Ap peal.
