About Cuthbert weekly appeal. (Cuthbert, Ga.) 18??-???? | View Entire Issue (Oct. 20, 1871)
For the Appeal. For tbc gratification of my little g'rls. I publish this simple poctn, in memory of “Little Willie Moody.” who died on Sun day, Oct, Ist, at his father’s residence, in Ctithberr. Willie was a good hoy ; at school he aas obedient to his teacher, faithful to his dl.tier, nnd generous to his school-mates. 1 never knew a boy more generally beloved. Tiu* history of this little boy has its morel. Every one, it matters not how humble his walk in life, has his influence ; a.ud “ dying leaves behind him footprints on the sand of lime.” Although surrounded by the sturdy old oak. and the majssti c pine, wo love the modest little violet, and the aroma which it sends forth in the forest air, attracts she wanderer, to its humble hiding place : Thou ’i t gone, Willie, to the spirit land, Thy life pased out as the hour glass sand ; That voice which so oft brought joy and love, Is chanting the liyms of praise above. Thy virtuous life, in modesty, Was radiant with humanity ; Tbo’, bereft of ostentations show, Thou liad’st thy influence here below. Thou was’t ever innocent and kiud, And all thy manners too refin’d, Poiiteness with its magic power Beguiled the school boy’s lonely hour. Thy teacher loved thee. Willie too, For thy duty always thon wouldV, do ; And frequently have I heard her say, “ Willie is faithful, and will obey,” His classmates, Jobnie, Bobbie and Clyde, May each one, as down life's hill you glide, Remember that if you would be loved, You must by charily be moved. Willie is not lost, but gone before, Mother the kind Savior will restore. To thy fond embrace that darling boy, Who is laid away from earth's alloy. Father be comforted in thy grief. For in Jesus thou call’st find relief, E’en as a father pittieth his child, He in Ills mercy chastcncth mild. Pence to thy ashes, brave noble boy , No more will the c res of life annoy, Thou art ever free from pain and strife, Thou’rt enjoying now immortal life. ILvsskltixe. C*eese—Their Value. Editor Plantation : To the far mer, geese are the most valuable of all domesticated fowls. Ten gos lings are fully equal to the besthoe baud in the cotton patch. They will keep ten acres of ground per fectly clean of grass, it the plowing is properly done. The most care ful hoe hand will bruise and skin cotton more or less, but geese will carefully pick all the grass from the young cotton without injuring it in the least. lam surprised that tar mers do not make more and better use of them. They pay for their keep many limes over in killing grass upon which they fatten; are 'saleable in market and a luxury up on his table. A farmer in my neighborhood, who knows their value, was offer ing four dollars a pair for common geese, to put in his cotton fields. Since the war I have raised all the geese I could, conveniently, and principally, for the purpose of working cotton. And more than once, when it would have been im possible for me to have saved my crop with the labor at my control, they saved it. I find the large white Eremin not only the most beautiful of all varieties, hut the best workers, and easily raised. I would advise every farmer to have his flock of geese, ami pure Eremin if he can procure them. They will work his cotton well without watch ing, and will save him a deal of tedious work or money. It is a beautiful sight to see thirty or for ty Eremin geese in a field of cotton carrying their rows almost as reg ular as hoc-hands. Any farmer who plants twenty or thirty acres of cot ton, will never be without geeso al ter once testing their viatic. The greatest objection to them is that they have not forgotten that deaf ening quack with which their ances tors saved Home. Any unusual sight or noise about the premises will put the whole flock so quack ing. L A. 11. ISt. Georg is, S. C. ■ ■ ■■ ■ - Tiie Time to Skim Milk. —Milk should he skimmed as soon a-s all the cream lias arisen, ami before the milk has thickened. The exact time required for the cream to rise, will of course depend upon the temperature, hut a. little experience will soon enable one to tell. At the time the cream should ha removed, it will have a bright, healthy up- j pearance—a rich, yellow, uniform, i and snch adherency of particles as will enable one sometimes to re move all the cream at one dip of tl.c skimmer. If allowed to stand too long with out skimming, both the quantity and quality of the cream M ill be seriously affected. The surface will become discolored, blotched, and knobby, while underneath tne cream is rapidly yielding to the cor rosive tendency of the acid in the milk. The thickest ci\ am may be as surely destroyed by standing on the milk, as would the finest fabric in a hath of sulphuric acid. When thus destroyed, the cream is re placed by a thin, watery substance, having no resemblance to milk or cream. Those facts which may he easily verified, show how essential it is that the cream should be taken oli before the milk has acquired any great amount of acidity, let in order to make the largest amouut of butter, care must he taken not to remove the cream too soon. Many neat and thrifty housewives make a practice of skimming up the milk at stated intervals, so as to he through with the job. This is, of course, very pleasant, hut it in volves considerable loss, as they, dp not get the full cream from the newest milk. The milk should he skimmed at the same age, provided it has had the same conditions as regards temperature, etc. It fol lows, then, that some milk should he skimmed every night and morn ing. Drumming vs. Advertising. A correspondent comphiinsfof the way in which.busincss is done, and the euormom-rWpenses nicrtfem to the “army of drummers” lie is compelled to employ. With all proper deference to his statement, wo still question its t uthfulness. We do not think lie is compelled to employ the leeches Ife describes. We are sure that if he woukl drop the whole tribe, and advertise his goods liberally, he would thereby save a considerable sum in ex penses, and reach a large business. The vicious system of drumming up the trade is demoralizing, aim costs too much to he profitable. The man who advertises instead can afford to sell at lower rates, and thus he can surely fasten to himself the trade he attracts by his an nouncements in the newspapers.— The eld fashioned way of telling the public what 3 on have to sell in plain simple terms', is worth more than nil the nqw inventions, and traders will have back t'dit A r e*o York Journal of Commerce-. “ Many a word at random spoken, may sooth or wound a heart that’s broken.”—Scott. , ‘OC’jbLe jßost Perfumery, Hair Oils, Lilly White, Ladies’ Toilet Articles, Stationery, Blank Books, etc., etc., At .1. j.
