'Trust What Tim* Has Sanctiohko.— 'The maxim that the voice of the people is the voice of the diviuity, may in some cast s, he .open to douht, hut the testimony of honest Alai enlightened witnesses extending through a series of yeais, and all to the same purport, ds worthy of credence, admits of no questiun. Upon such testimony the reputation of Hos tetter’s Stomach Bitters as an antidote and •cure for many ailments is based. During the twenty yeais that, it Ims been before the world, innumerable preparations intended to compet e with it have gone like rockets, and eome down* the extinguished sticks. Menu ■while the progress of that incomparable tonic has been swift and steady—always upward and onward like the eagle’s flight. Its intro duetion produced a revolution in therapeutics, and it proved to be one of those salutary rev otntious that cannot go backwards To-day nortetter's Bitters is one ol the most popular remedies in christen Join, and commands a larger sale than any oilier medicinal prepara tion. domestic or imported, on this side of the Atlantic. Asa cure for dyspepsia, bilious •disorders, nervous affections, gcneiai debility, and as a preventive cf epidemic lever?, it takes precedence of every other remedy. This fact should teach the ambitions country dealers who endeavor to foist their local abor tions ou the public in its stead, how futile their small attempts to cajole the community must necessarily be. Where the game fish have failed there is no chance for the 11 snek ers.” Specialities are tlie Older of the day, and good men who push good specialities are always successful.— This is eminently applicable to the advertising agency of Messi-s. Griffin A Hoffman, the growth and expan sion of which has been almost with out a parallel in the history of Bal timore trade and commerce.—Bal timore American . Wesleyan Female College.— Ecv. Dr. O. L. Smith, the recently elected President of this popular in fltitution, having resigned the posi tion, the trustees of the institution held a meeting yesterday and elect ed as his successor Dr. E 11. Myers, of this city. Pr. M. has long been known throughout the South as the able editor of the • Southern Chris tian Advocate, and we congratulate the trustees of the College upon their good fortune in securing the services of so worthy a President. Wp all feel a deep interest in the welfare of old Wesleyan, and the election of Dr. Myers will be hail ed with delight by not only the members of the Methodist Church, but by the friends of female educa - 1 :on throughout the entire South.— Telegraph. Tub Root and Shoe Trade.—Atlanta is establishing a reputation in this line, which is carrying much of the trade of Southwest Georgia to that city. The leading house in the boot and shoe trade is that of G. 11. & A W. Force, who from long experience, un derstand th'-ir business well, and adopt the sensible way of letting people know they want trade. See their advertisement. Cutting Affray.— A difficulty occurred on Monday evening, between Mr. T. R. Brown, and Abel MeKenny in which, we learn, the former was very severely, though not dangerously wouuded—receiving five or six different cuts. Mr. MeKenny was placed in jail the fol lowing morning to await a hearing. nox. C. B. Wooten*. —This gentleman, who has already won an amiable reputation in the practice of law, in this section, and is recognized as one of the rfsing men, and leading lawyers of the State, has removed from Dawson to Macon, where, doubtless a bright career awaits liira. He will still prac tice in the courts of this section, and it is needless for ns to say that business placed in his hands will be faithfully attended to. From Sire to Son —The reputation of By. ington’s Hotel, at Fort Valley, has been hand ed down from sire to sons For years this has been recognized as the best eating house in Georgia ; and few people pa‘s it witliont testing its merits. We have never yet heard a man complain at the price of a dinner there; but have heard men wonder how such a table could he kept tip. so continual ly. No wonder the tables are always crowd ed at Byington’s Hotel. Another Grand Success. —Mr. W. C llay. <Jr„ who by his extraordinary success in the manufacture of Scupperno g Wine, has made a wide reputation, has presented us with a bottle of this years’ manufacture, which convinces us that he has been success ful again. It is indeed splendid, and in time will be equal to that which has been pro nounced by those thoroughly posted, superior to any they ever saw imported or homemade. Mr. Hav lias a small lot ot the famous wine of last year still on hand. Annual Meeting of Randolph County Bible Society.— The annual meeting of the Randolph County Bible Society, was held in the Presbyterian Church in Cuthbert, Ga., on Sunday, stli October, 1871. In the Absence of the President and Sec retary Rev. R. B. Lester acted as chairman, and J. McK. Gunn as Secretory. Tlie report of the Treasurer, was read and received as satisfactory. An able and interesting discourse was de livered hy Rev. W. A. Parks, Bible agent for the State of Georgia. After the sermon a collection was taken up, resulting iu the raising of about ninety dollars, Cash and subscription, for the bene fit of tbe county society. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Dr. S. G. Robertson, President. Revs. R. B- Lester, J. S . Cosby. Abner Campbell. Vice Presidents. Dr. T. S. Powell. Secretary & Treasurer. Managers- -W. B. Scales. Dr. L. McLester, Elam Christian, B. J. Baldwin, Jr. J.. McK. Gunn. Meeting adjourned with tiie benediction, J. McK. "Gunn, Sec'y. ScPKitiou Court. —The November Term of Randolph Superior Court, convened on Mon day—His Honor, Judge Harrell, presiding and dispatching business with his usual vig or. Col S. Wise Parker is on hand in his old position of Solicitor General. Monday was taken up with the Percy Ann Ozmore divorce case- the jury giving a di vorce, and $2,500 alimony. The case of Cijy Council of Cuthbert, vs. J. M. Brooks, terminated iu favor of the ter mer, replenishing* (lie city treasury to the amount of $447. The docket is being disposed of as rapid ly as could be expected, but it will probably require two weeks to get through with the business. The attendance of legal genllemen from other counties is smaller than common. We have met, Hons. C. B Wooten and S. D. Ir win, from Macon ; Hon. F. M. Harper, and Judge Wiley G. Parks, of Dawson. The grand Jury is composed of the very best men of the county, and otir citizens may rest assured that the affairs of tbe coun ty will not be allowed tp suffer in their bands. The Petit Juries are made up of a high order of citizenship, and justice is sure to weigh down every oth r consideration, while the seale is In tUeif hands. Randolph Agricultural Society.— Tbe regular monthly meeting of the Society was held at the Court House in Cnthbert, on Sat urday, Oct. 4tb, Judge Win. Coleman in the chair. The following resolutions, laid oa the ta hie at tortner meeting, were taken up and passed : Resolved, That E. L. Douglass, H. Fiel der, Geo. Smith, A. B. McAfee and O. I’. Beall, be appointed a committee to confer with Rev. Samuel Anthony. Agent South Ga. Conference for an Orphan’s Home, as to the probability cf locating that institution at or near Cuthbert. Resolved, That each member pf this So ciety pledge himself not to plaVit more than six acres of cotton to each hand employed, the balance of land cultivated to be devoted to other crops. The following preamble and resolutions offered by N. T. Crozier at former meeting, were taken up, amended and adopted. Whereas, It has been the custom of far mers in cur county to give liens upon their growing crops, for fertilizers, provisions, Ac., which action we deem unwise and ruinous to the farming interest; and. Whereas, some in our county are promising and paying al on st any price to secure laborers—even to half the gross proceeds of the entire crop ; therefore be it Resolved. That no member of this Socie ty will U'gin a crop with the expectation of giving liens upon the same for any fertilizers, bacon, corn, or material consumed in the cultivation of the same. Resolved, That no member of this Socie ty will give half the gross proceeds of the crop lor labor. On motien of O. P. Beall, Resolved. That J. B Buchanan, Secretary and treasurer, of this Society, be requested to bring up the minutes, and other records, and have them present at the next meeting. Also, that be make a report of the financial condition of the Society. Adopted. On motion of Elam Christian, Resolved, That it is the sense of this So ciety, that the lien system of cultivating crops, is deleterious to the planting interesls of the State at this time—however necessary it may have been at the time of its adoption —and that our representatives in the present Legislature be earnestly requested to use their utmost endeavors to procure the repeal of tbe law defending tbe same at the earliest possible day. Adopted. The Society then adjourned to meet the first Saturday in December, at 11 o'clock. A. M. Titos. Coleman, Sec'y. Rev. W. A. Parks’ Ser mon, at the Anniversa ry of* Randolph County Rible Society. This discourse was IL-tened to with marked attention hy the large audience present at the Bible Society*’ Anniversary, on Sabbath morning hut. We would not attempt even an imperfect synopsis, hut for the dissemi nation of important information ; and we can not hope to gi> e this in the well count cted aud impressive language of the able speaker : The text was taken from the •Second Psalm, 7th and Bih verses : *' I will declare the decree : the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son ; this day have I begotten thee. “A>kof me and I shall give the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts ot the ea th for thy possession.” Tlie preacher started out with the statea ent that the world had never known anything to progress to such au extent as the Gospel of Christ. It descended to earth as a queen of might, and sent oat its messengers—conquer ing aud to conquer— till millions own her alle giance. The glorious wfl: fare si ill goes on, and will continue till prophecy is fulfilled—till the heathen of all lands listen with joy to the gospel sou id, and the uitermost parts of the earth feel the genial influence of gospel light Tiiis decree teaches the diviuity of the Lord Jesus Christ, and is cor robot ated by revelations that spoke out from Heaven, saying “ This i„ my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” While infidelity denies the divine origin of Christ, it is compelled to admit enough to make Him more than human. The infidel has no stronghold but is weakened by the life of the Savior, though denying his resurrection from the dead. Chrisl satisfied the demands of the law, and tlie promised reward of the Father Was the conversion of the world. It is not only true that this is prophecy, but it is also true that the prophecy is daily being fulfilled. This is tlie brightest day that ever dawned oil the earth because of this fulfillment. The two principal instrumentalities employed by God for the accomplishment of this great work are the preaching of the word and the distribu tion of the Bible lie then spoke of the wonderful preserva tion of the revealed will of God to man. More than -1,0(10 years were occupied ill making this revelation to earth, aud that it might be per fect and nnmistakable, every effort divine wis dom could suggest was exercis' and in making it. It is uot strange that Heaven should he engag" ed to preserve the Bible —Heaven's revela lions to m n, containing the only knowledge we have of the Father. Four hundred and twenty years ago the iiist Bibb; was printed with t.pe—the Bible was the first book print, ed—at Metz, in Germany, in the Latin lan guage. Seventy-five years ago there was not a Bible Sociiey in the world. One hundred years ago, the Bible was uot primed in fifty different languages—to-day it is being printed aud read in 3;l0 languages. 75 years ago the process of priming was very glow—now three Bibles are printed every second of time.- 61 years ago the British and Foreign Bible Socie ty was organized, for printing the Bible in cheap form for the poor. That Society has printed 4,030,000 Bibles, and the American Bible Society, its offspring, 1.500,000 —so that the world is being inundated with the waters of life. The circulation of the Bible has pro gressed more in the last, fifty years than in all time past. It has recently been printed iu the Arabic language—giving it access to mil liors who could not be reached iu any other way. 150,000,001) of Mohammedans have been raised from the cradle to consider this a sacred language; and no matter how hard pressed parents may be with poverty, the child is taught the Arabic language. This is the greatest achievement of those engaged iu this glorious work. These people believe the vowel points iu that language were made by the finger of God ; and within the past four years tlie Society has sacceed -d in printing in that language with the vowel points—so that the True word, is rapidly taking the place of the Coran throughout that benign land. Tbe zeal manifested by these ignorant people is a standing rebuke to those iu Christian lands who take so little interest in the religious training of their children. Even the roaming Turks about Jerusalem are now receiving the Bible—and in Ancient Bethany, so long shrouded in spiritual gloom, the spite of a Christian Chnroli points Heav enward. The Bible is also being printed in the Chi nese language—last year 15,000,000 copie ß wire sent to that land. Notwithstanding the strong opposition—the edicts forbidding the t aching of women in English schools, <&c., the w ork goes on ; ail 1 to day, a Chinaman, convoited in liis own land, is in America, as a Christian missionary to his people in this coun try. Large numbers of the Bibles printed by this Society are bought by the Roman Catholic priests in Italy, Mexico, and tlesewhpre, and burned before the people in the streets. In ete.id of checking its spread, even this is working good to the canse—the people hav ing their curiosity aroused—examining for themselves and being convinced and conveit ea. Let them contiuue to burn Bibles and martyr Christians, as they ever have; it will only enrich Immanuel’* land. There is not fire enough lo burn out the religion of Christ.— Those parents in thi< Protestant land, who thoughtlessly send their children to Unman Catholic institutions, received a witheiiug re buke. Romanism has lost its stronghold, and is getting weaker and weaker iu the Eastern countries, and America is looked to as their promised land. The fight of Roman Caihoii cism and protestantisru will have to be fought over again. lie spoke of the growing pow er of that church in our land, and meutioned oue church in Atlanta with eight hundred members, and oue of the finest buildings iu the State. He theu referred to the work iu India.— They 100 have a sacred i.inguage ; hut the Bi ble has been suited to their understanding and one man has distributed 2,000,0011 copies iu that land. Even without missionaries lo aceompa ny it the Word is accomplishing wonders iu that laud. Russia, Turkey and Mexico are being prot estautiztd. The Sandwich Islands, reclaimed front Herthaaism, is now sending Christian missionaries abroad. There is not now a single nation whose doors are bolted against the missionary and the Bible. Verily, the n termost parts of the earth are open to the reception of the glad tidings of great joy.— Even iu Rome, when Victor Immanuel took possession of the city, the Pope’s Soldiers swore allegiance to the new kiug on the Bi ble, instead of the Crucifix Two Bible men, Methodist and Presbyterian, went with the king’s forces, and spread their tables under the very shadow ol St. Peter’s spire. Indeed there was never a time when divine light spread with such rapidity us the present. The faith of the chmch needs toning np on God’s promises, to complete the great woik un dertaken. The missionary and Bible canse— sisters of mercy—go hand in hand, and even now God is giving His Son the Heathen for an inheritance. Governments may tum ble, and kings fall, but the banner of the cross shall never go down. HRE A T INDUCEMENTS! To People Who Eat!
