Let every quarter of the county be represented. Remeinb.r the time, Saturday, Nov. 2d, at 11 o’clock, A. M. A Fixe Guitar, can be bought very cheap by early application at this office. Going Off.—Notour 1 ' lucky store, ’’Gunn, but the big stock ot goods be has on hand. Tlie sweet potato and turnip crops in this county are very good. The toy setts at Powell's beat anything lately brought out in that line. If yon want a good horse or mule, call on Mr. Lew. Poacher, at the Livery Stable. The News Counter at Powell’s is always attractive. The mast popular periodical lit erature of the times is regularly received. If you want a good cheap buggy or wagon, read tlie advertisement of W. B. Mc- Ilan, and go to him for a tr .de. Last Friday. Saturday and Sunday were quite warm, and reminded us of April with its gentle showers. A majority of the farmers of this and adjoining counties, have made corn enough to do them till another- crop is made. Some few will have a little to spare. Owen & Sealey are adding a large room to the rear of their already commodi ous store house. It takes plenty of room for their huge stocks. \q.. We are having a touch of genuine winter, and wood and liglitwood find ready sale. 'Sspq, We saw fine sweet potatoes selling on the streets yesterday at torty cents per bushel Now, it o’possums would just come down a little ! Let us have rousing meeting at the Court House to-morrow, and show our ap preciation of tlie return of our State Govern' ment into the hands of Georgians. We understand there is some talk of tlie Baptist Sabbath School giving the children a Christmas tree, liy all means, let them bave it. The Thieves made a haul on W. D. Sheridan’s stock one night last week, and succeeded in making off with a quantity of rations. Tlie Trustees of the Cushbert Male Institute have resolved to open the school on the -15th of January next. A communica tion from the President ot the Board was re ceived too late for this issue. £s#" There is one clever Warehouse man in Eufaula, who desires to cultivate the ac quaintance of Georgia farmers, and who is sure to do the lair tiling with them in every particular. But just then it was announced that there was r.o fire. Look out for the Circus.—We went to Gillespie’s show the other day, and we were delighted with it. We were particularly pleased with the •* riding round ”on horses. A ring master sits in the centre, and the horses “ git up and git ” at a twp-forty rate. Tliis is tile cutest trick in the toy line we ever saw. Really, it, is an interesting show to look through the huge stock of Christmas ■ loin's now on exhibition at Gillespie’s. If you don't believe Gillespie is 0. K. for Christmas, just go and “ see how it is your self.” We take pleasure in directing attention to tlie Card of Messrs. Palmer & Canterberry, in another column. They are clever, sober hardworking young men. and deserve a lib. cral patronage. Tliey will give customers entire satisfaction. It you want a good sett of harness, or a good piir of shoes, at low figures, give them a call. Mrs. E. Gibson makes an announce ment through our advertising columns, in which our lady renders are especially inter ested. The first question generally is “ what, shall 1 wear ?” and the next is *■ where can I get it the handsomest and cheapest?” Be sure and read what Mrs. Gibson lias to say. Mayor and Council. — It will not be loug befoie our citizens will be called upon to elect a Mayor and Council for 1872. Let us begin to ascertain who will serve, and who will be acceptable to our people. We hope there will be no lack of harmony in making the choice—no ring-work, or wire-pulling in the premises ; and in order that everybody may be satisfied, we should hold a conven tion of the voters of the city at an early day and bring out an acceptable ticket. We propose Monday, the 10th of Decem ber, as a suitable day tor said convention. What say the people? A CARD. CASH! CASH ! COST! CASH! CASH! The Committee of citizens jijake! the following report to the Legisla ture about the Books: Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 25, 1871. To the House of Representatives now in session : Iu compliance with a correspond ence which wo herewith enclose, marked exhibit A. We took for mal possession of the books and pa pers of the Western and Atlantic Railroad on the 28th day ot Au gust, 1871, and bave been engaged since that time in bringing up said books for the purpose of showing the balances. In view of the short time we have been engaged, and the vast amount of labor necessary to be be stowed, we bave to regret that we are able only to make a report to the dose of the fiscal year ending September 30, 1870, as you will find from statement annexed, made up by the General Book-keeper in charge, which we respectfully sub mit with his report, marked Exhib it B, in accordance with a resolution of your honorable body passed No vember 24,1871. In addition to the work done on the books we have carefully record ed all the vouchers taken during Mr. Blodgett’s administration of the road, beginning January Ist, and ending December 24tli, 1870, (the day lessees took charge.) Except vouchers No. 6, dated February 15th, 1870, from Jose phine Beck, for $4,000 00. Voucher No. 20, dated March 27, 1870, from James Sprouls, for sl,- 500 00. Voucher No. 71, dated March, 1870, from William White & Cos., for $3,000 00. Voucher No. 60, dated July 30, 1870, from J A I Whitaker, for $5,587 50. These four vouchers were never turned over to our committee, and as yet, we have been unable to trace them. We have thought proper to copy these vouchers, which has taken no small amount of labor, in order to facilitate such investigations as might be determined by the Legis lature into the late management of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, and for the further purpose of more effectually securing the records of said administration. The vouchers are copied into blank books and properly indexed so that they become ready and valu able references, in the hands of an investigating committee. Referring to the books and pa pers of the Western and Atlantic Railroad it were perhaps proper to say that they show a liberality in general expenditures, by the admin istration in question of gigantic pro portions, the heaviest of which took place from October Ist to Decem ber 27th, IS7O. As partial evidence of the pecul iar liberality in disbursing the peo pie’s money by Ms. Blodgett’s ad ministration, we give the following comparative statement of receipts and disbursements under the man agement of the road by Major Campbell Wallace, Colonel E. Ilul bert and Captain Foster Blodgett: statement. Johnson & Cos., October 30, 1970 47,01 K) (0 $lO2 563 35 Amount expended by Blodgett over and above that by Campbell Wallace £762,430 11. Add to the £762,436 11 expended by Mr. Blodgett over and above the ex penditures made by Major Camp bell Wallace for the year 1867, the $109,131 82 turned over to Mr. Blodgett by Col. E. Ilulbcrt in cash, and cash assets and about three quarters of a million of debts com tracted by said administration, paid in part by railroad commission with the balance yet unpaid, and you have the grand total of about eigh teen hundred thousand dollars as the proximate sum which has been recklessly and unwarrantably ex pended or complicitly and illegiti mately appropriated. Considering the fact that only the small sum of forty-five thousand dollars was paid into the treasury by Mr. Blodgett during his administration of the road, and that $109,131 82 were turned over to him from Col. E. Hulbert’s administration the in creased business of the road for 1870, the careless and irregular manner in which a large number of the vouchers have been taken, which can be readily pointed out to your committee, and the sudden af fluence of so many who have been connected with the late administra tion of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, it shows a reckless misap propriation of the hard earnings of the people, which amounts to prima facie evidence of fraud and de mands, in the judgment of this committee, the most thorough in vestigation. We respectfully sug gest that it shall be the pleasure of the committee in charge to turn over all the books and papers of the Western and Atlantic Railroad to the Legislative committee when appointed and to give all the infor mation in our power relating to the books, or that may be of value in the investigation. Respectfully submitted, C. L. Redwing, C. C. Hammock, E. E. Rawson, Committee in charge. [exhibit il] Atlanta, Nov. 22, 1871. Messrs. C. L. liedwine, C. C. Hammock, E. E. Rare son, Com mittee in charge of the books and papers of the Western and Atlantic Railroad: Gentlemen —I have the pleasure to hand you herewith statements of the Earnings and Expenses, also a Financial Statement of the Western and Atlantic Railroad at the close of the Fiscal Year, ending Septem ber 30th, 1871 Having been appointed General Book keeper in charge, September 15t,1861, with competent assistants, the duties involved in making up these reports have been onerous.— Upon an examination of tlie books, 1 found they had not been balanced since January 3lst, 1870, (which is the date of the last balance made by myself.) Several attempts had been made, showing forced balances, which necessitated a thorough inves tigation by checking over the books of the road from February 15t,1870, to September 30, 1870. In doing this numerous errors were found, which will affect some of the ac counts. I find that no settlements have been made during a period of eight months after 4he road was leased, with the Atlanta, Kingston, Dalton and Chattanooga agencies. The different agents, since my appoint incut, requested a settlement, but I have informed them, that owing to the condition of the books of the road, nothing could he done with their accounts until the books were thoroughly examined up to the time of the lease, at which time their ac counts would be in a condition for adjustment. The labor of adjusting and com pleting the business of the road from September 30th, 1870, up to, and beyond the lease of the road, will be very arduous. The accounts with agents and connecting roads will require a thorough investiga tion, and will consume several months to perfect settlements, etc. Thanking the gentlemen who have assisted me in these labors, and your committee, I am, very respectfully, your obedient servant, B. F. Moore, General Book Keeper, in charge. The Champion Monster Discov ered.—A Boston dispatch to the Herald, of Sunday, from Lynn, Massachusetts, says that a barber of that city named John G. Clinton, was arrested Saturday night, charged with first beating his wife in a most shocking manner, and then pouring kerosene over her and setting her on fire. She was liter ally roasted to death. Her body was still burning when found, and presented a sickening appearance. There were marks of violence on her head consisting of two or three cuts, looking as though they had been made with some dull instru ments. On her breast were also wounds, which appeared to have been caused by something besides the flames. The features were ren dered unrecognizable, and the hair was burned close to the head, leav ing the skull bare and horribly crisped, and black flesh was drop ping from her hands arms and body.
