To Our Farmers.
A correspondent risks what we
think of late plowing. Plowing
should not be continued later than
tun or eleven o’clock at night. It
gets the horses in the habit of stay
ing out late, and unduly exposes the
plow. We have known plows to
acquire spring-halt and inflaraatory
rheumatism from late plowing.—
Don’t do it.
Tt> another con espondent, who
wants tfs to suggest a good drain
on a farm, wo would say, a heavy
mortgage at ten per cent, will drain
it about rapidly as an} thing we
know of.
When you make cider select
nothing hut the soundest turnips,
chopping them into sled length be
fore crad ing them. In boiling your
cider use plenty ol ice, and when
boiled bang it up in the sun to dry.
A piek as should never be used
in picking apphs. It lias a tenden
cy to break down the vines and
damage the hive.
In sowing your winter ap, li-ja k
a horsc-rake will he found prefera
ble to a step-ladder. St< pladd» rs
are liable to freeze up, at and are h ird -
ly palatable unless boiled with su
gar.
In cutting down hemlock trees
for canning, select only the largest.
Don’t throw away the chips,as they
make fine parlor ornaments, encas
ed in rustic frames of salt and vine
gar.
The coming cold weather should
suggest to the humane farmer the
necessity for a good cow-shed. The
following is a receipe for making
a good cow shed: Pour a pailful of
boiling hot water on her back, and
if that don’t make a good cow shed
—her hair—then we are no prophet,
to anybody.
Now is the time for planting your
winter hay. The pink eyed South
down is probably the best variety,
as ik-don’t need poling and begins
to early.
A Beautiful Incident.
On a beautiful sr miner’s day, a
clergyman was called to preach i
a town in Indiana, to a young Epi.v
copal congregation. At tlie close of
his discourse, be addressed bis
young hearers in such words as
these:
“ Learn that the present life is a
preparation for, and has a tendency
to, eternity. The present iB linked
to the future throughout creation,
in the vegetable, in the animal, and
in the moral world. As is the seed,
so is the fruit; as is the egg, bo is
the fowl; as is the boy, so is the
man ; and as is the rational being
in this world, so will lie be in the
next; Lives estranged from God
here, is Diiei estranged from God
in the mxt, and Enoch walking
with God here, is Enoch walking
with God-in a calm and bettir world.
I beseech you, live then, for a bless
ed eternity. Go to the worm that
you tread upon, and learn a lesson
of wisdom. The very caterpillar
seeks the food that fosters it for an
other and brighter state ; and more
wisely than man builds its own sep
ulchre, from whence in time by a
kind of resurrection, it comes foith
anew creature in almost an augelio
form. And now that which crawl
ed flies, and that which fed on com
paratively gross food, sips the dew
that revels in the rich pastures, an
emblem of that paradise where
flows she river ot life and grows the
tree of life. Could the caterpillar
have been diverted from its proper
element and mode of life, if it had
never attained the butterfly's splen
did form and hue, it had perished a
worthless worm. Consider her
ways and be wise. Let it not be
said that ye are more negligent than
worms, and that your reason is less
available than their instinct. As
often as the butterfly flies across
your path, remember that it whim
pers in its flight, ‘ live for the fu
ture.’”
With this the preacher closed his
discourse; but to deepen the im
f pression, a butterfly directed by the
* Hand which guides alike the sun
and atom in its course, fluttered
through the church as if commis
sioned by Heaven to repeat the ex
hortation. There was neither speech
nor language, but its voice was
heard saying to the gazing audience
—“Live for the future.”
Never forget what a man has
Baid to you when he is angry. If
he has charged you with anything,
you had better look it up. A per
son has often been started from a
pleasant dream of self-deception by
the words of an angry man, who
may wish his words unsaid the
next hour, but they are past recall.
The wisest course is to take home
this lesson with meekness to onr
souls. It is a saying of Socrates
that every man had need of a faithful
friend and bitter enemy ; the one
to advise, and the other to show
him his faults.
Economy in Fattknig Animals.
—lt has peen proved by experiment
that the more rapidly an animal is
fattened the less quantity of food is
necessary to sustaii its mere vital
ity. Thus, an animal ean be more
cheaply fattened by consuming tea
bushels of corn in two months than
if four months were occupied in the
process. Liberal and abundant feed
ing is the most economical, and a
saving of time in producing the same
result is a gain in the profit.
Charcoal or Earth for lions.
—Hogs that are pnt up to fatten, as
well as store hogs,.should have same
ohavcoal or earth given them occa
eionally. We have found it a good
plan to dig a few sods from the fence
corners for them, which they will
oonaumo with much selish. In a
state of nature, the hog, which roots
for his living, must necessarily take
into his stomach a large quantity
of earth. It is advisable to allow
him to do this when penned up.
Tfcp long street costumes have
been made fashionable by those
who have large-shaped feet and ug
ly ankles. A woman with a pretty
toot thinks it really wicked, as well
as extravagant, to drag a handsome
silk dress over dusty streets and
muddy crossings.

Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Fancy
Drink. Made of Poor Ram, Whiskey,
Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquors, doc
tored. spiced and sweetened to please the taste,
called “ Tonics,” “ Appetizers,” “ Restorers,” Ac.,
that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin,

Alcoholic Stimulants. They are the
GREAT BLOOD PURIFIER and A
LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLE, a perfect
Renovator and lurig-orator of the System, carry

to a healthy condition. No person can take theso
Bitters according to directions and remain long
unwell, provided their hones arc not destroyed
by mineral poison or other means, and tbo vital
organs wasted beyond the point of repair.
They are a Gentle Purgative as well
as a Tonic, possessing, also, the peculiar merit
of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Conges
tion or Inflammation of the Liver, and of all the
Visceral Organs.
FOR FEMALE COMPLAINTS, whether
in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of
womanhood or at the turn of life, these Tonic Bit
ters have no equal.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Rhea
matism and Gout, Dyspepsia or In
digestion, Bilious, Remittent and
Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the
Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder,
these Bitters have been most successful. Snell
Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood,
which it generally produced by derangement ol
the Digestive Organs.

the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Bilious

the Lungs, Pain in the regions of the Kidneys, and
a hundred other painful symptoms are.the off
springs ot Dyspepsia.
They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate the
torpid Liver and Bowels, which render them of
unequalled efficacy in cleansing the blood of all im
purities, and imparting new life and vigor to the
whole system. \

Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its
impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples,
Eruptions or Sores; cleanse it when you find it
obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it
when it is foul, and your feelings will tel! you when.
Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system
