lion io Advertise.
Never run down your opponents
goods in public. Let him do his
own advertising.
Let your advertisments have
something of the uash in them, with
out exaggeration.
You can’t eat enough in one
week to last you a whole year, and
you cant advertise on that plan ei
ther.
It’s,as true of advertising as* of
anything else in tbo world —if it is
worth doing at all, it is worth do
ing well. .
Handbills and circulars are good
of their kind, but cannot take the
place of newspaper advertisements.
Injudicious is like
fishing where there’s no fish. You
need to let the lines fall in the right
place.
No bell can ring so loudly as a
good advertisement. People will
believe what they hear.
Small advertisements and plenty of
them, i> a good rule. We were all
babies once, yet we made considera
ble noise.
When you advertise, see that you
do it on the same principle that you
buy goods. Get the most that you
can for the money.
We don’t recommend advertising
as the best way to get a wife; but
we know that it is the best way to
get a good trade.
A constant dropping will wear a
rock. Keep dropping your adver
tisements on the public and they
\fift soon melt under it like rock
salt.
According tp the character or ex
tent of your business set aside a lib
eral percentage for your advertising.
Keep yourself unceasingly before
the public, and it matters not what
business -of utility you may be enga
ged in, for if intelligently and indus
triously pursued, a fortuno will bo
result.
The man who advertises shows
not only a business talent above his
neighbors, but lie may bo at once
reckoned among the independent,
generous and public spirited of the
community. He who hides his
light under a bushel, when such ad
vantages as those at present affor
ded are so freely offered him, docs
not deserve to succeed.
A Singular Crowd. —The other
day a very singular crowd assem
bled betore the Ministry of Justice
at Paris. It was composed of all
the executioners in France—every
one of whom had been thrown out
of employment by the decreo estab
lishing only one executioner for the
whole country, and each one of
whom hoped that he might get tho
place. There were thirty in all—
men who make it a business to kill
people—yet in their outer mien the
mildest men that ever cut a throat.
Most of them have been educated
to the work of the scaffold—from
boyhood up—and looked forward
to the possibility of gettiug the
place latterly vacated by “M. de
Paris” with the same joyous antici
pation that our office seekers look
to a prospective Government clerk
ship.
An Eloquent Passage.- -Man
dice, but nature is eternal. The
seasons keep their appointed time;
day returns with its eloquent mys
tcresty. The same stars that lit the
ghastly battle field of Troy, rough
heroes —which shone on the marble
streets of Rome, and on the sad
eyes of virgil sleepers in tho liviug
glew of inspiration—the watch fires
of tho angels which, through centu
ries of devastation and change, have
still burned on unceasingly, speak
to us as they did to Dante and
Shakespeare and Milton, of the di
vine glory, the omnipotence, the ev
erlasting beauty and love of God.
Mark of a Gentleman. —No
man is a gentleman who, without
provocation, would treat with in
civility the humblest of his species.
It is vulgarity for which no accom
plishment of dress or address can
ever atone. Show us the man who
desires to make all around happy,
and give causo of offence to no one,
and w« will show you a truo gen
tleman, though he may never have
worn a suit of broadcloth, nor ever
have seen a lexicon. We are proud
to say, for the honor of our species,
there are men in every throb of
whose hearts is a solicitude for thg
welfare of mankind, and whose ev
ery breath is perfumed with kind
ness.
lt is told of a young gentle
man whom a maiden liked, but
father didn’t, that at a reasonable
hour the old gent mildly intimated
that tho time for retiring had ar
rived. “ I think you are correct,
my dear sir,” answered the nine
teenth century, modestly, “ we have
been waiting over an hour for you
to put pourself in your little bed.”
■Father retired thoughtfully.
The lightning played a queer
trick at Newark, N. J., tho other
day. Striking a well, it not only
expelled the water but partially
filled it with sand, much to the con
sternation of those who depend up
on the jvell for their ordinary bev
erage.

FOR 1872.
TELEGRAPH&JESSENGER
The campaign for 1572 will be a
gigantic and convulsive struggle.—
Nothing like it has been seen since
1840, and in the momentous and
fundamental character of the issues
involved, wo trust nothing like it
need occur again in the history of
the United States. We hope it
will result in the re-establishment
of tho great foundation principles
of civil and personal freedom, and
its time-honored muniments—of the
local independence of the States—
of the freedom of the ballot—of
the impartiality of public justice—
of the integrity of Executive ad
ministration—of the inviolability of
the habeas corpus—of the triumph
of law and the Constitution—and
in the complete victory of peace,
conciliation, national harmony and
tranquility over the demon of dis
cord, usurpation, tyranny, hatred,
and the great moral and sectional
war proclaimed by Grant, Morton
and Butler.
In Georgia, however it may be
elsewhere, the result of this contest
is not at all problematical; but an
intense and overwhelming interest
will nevertheless be felt in its pro
gress and result, and the giand me
dium of information here will be
the different editions of the Tele
graph and Messenger.
