A Touching (Story. | Robbing the Heart.
The following story is on no. Dr. X. 15. Richardson, of loin
icss authority than that of G<*n. don, the well-known physician.
John B. Gordon. It occurred in | heard a scholar singing the prais-
thc late years of the war when jes of the “ruddy bnmper.” and
the edge of enthusiastic patriot- i saying he conld not get through
ism had worn away. A soldier in i the day without it. Dr. Richard
the Virginia army heard, through
a letter received by a comrade,
that his family were in great dis
tress—through sickness and des
titution. He applied for leave to
go home, but conld not obtain it.
He laid his petition before higher-
authority and represented Ins
ease with desperate eloquence,
•nit a battle was impending,-every
man was wanted at the front and
his prayer was refused. Then he
went without leave. He stole
away from the command and
reached home, after weary tramp
ing night and day. When he
entered his cottage it was night,
his children slept, Imt his wife
sat by the hearth. She sprang to
meet and clung to him, sobbing
for joy.
“And you got a furlough after
a’!—1 was so afraid—”
H<? shook his head.
“\ou did not desert surely.
You would not, John? - ’
‘ Could I know the fix you and
the children were in and not come
to help you ?” he answered dog
gedly.
Then she threw her arms about
him and begged him to return at
once. She and the children could
get along. If they Fuffercil, why
anything was better than he
should stain himself with dishon
or. Her strong sense of right
prevailed. Though he knew that
to return after desertion meant
court martial and probably death,
he went back. He was tried and
condemned to lie shot. The sen
tence would surely have been car
ried into effect but for the inter
vention of Gen. Gordon. That
kind hearted officer, sought him
out, heard his story, and used his
influence to obtain a pardon for
the condemned man. A few days
I iter the battle of Seven Pinos
took place. Near the close of
that terrible fight Gen. Gordon
was near a battery which had
doue gallant execution, but was
no*v all but disabled. The men
and lioiscs belonging to it lay
dead or dying. Only one man
stood at the guns when the Gen
eral rode lip. Ilis face was black
ened with gnn powder, blood
|ioured from a deep wound in his
side, but lie was loading his gun
with his last strength. He ram
med down tiie charge, applied the
match, and as the ball sped on its
errand, he dropped down living.
“Don’t you know me, General?
he saiil, as Gen. Gordon paused
beside him, struck with admira
tion anil pity. “I am the man
you saved from being shot; the
man with such a good wife.
Write a line to her, please Gener
al, and tell her I died a faithful
soldier, because of her.”
A Deeply Afflicted Wemail.
J he wife of a well known tnittis-
istcr of this State, says a Winona.
Minn., special of the l«Jth inst.,

flic.ted with what is known as

her body are turning to a sub
stance resembling hard chalk —
Several years ago an acquaint
ance in helping her out of a car
riage broke her collar hone. As
soon as it healed one of her arms
broke while some one was assist
ing her from a vehicle. A little
later her other arm drapped help

son said to him: “Will you lie
good enough to feel, my pulse
as I stand here?” He did
so. I said: “count it carefully;
what does it say?” “Your pulse
says seventy-four.” I then sat
down in a chair and asked him to
count it again. He did so, and
said: “Your pulse has gone down
to seventy.” I then lay down on
the lounge, and said: “Will you
take it again?” he replied: “Why.
it is only sixty four; what an ex
traordinary thing!” I then said:
When you lie down at night,
that is the way nature gives your
heart rest. You know nothing
about it, but that licating organ
is resting to that extent; and if
you reckon it tip it is a great dea'
ol rest, because in lying down the
heart is doing ten strokes less a
minute. Multiply that by sixty,
and it is 600: multiply it by eight
hours, and within a fraction it is
5,000 strokes different; and as the
heart is throwing six ounces of
blood at every stroke, it makes a
difference of 30,000 ounces cf
lifting during the night. When
I lay down at night without any
alcohol, that is the rest my lie: rt
gets. lint when you take your
wine or grog you do not allow that
rest, for the influence of the alco
hol is to increase the number of
strokes, and instead of getting this
rest you put on something like
15,000 extra strokes, anil the re
sult is you rise up very seedy and
unlit for the next days’ work till
you have taken a little more of the
“ruddy bmn[ier,” which you say
is the soul of man below.”

“Mamina,” said a small hoy to
his mother, “do you believe every
thing papa says?”
“Of course, my child,” replied
the mother with wifely pride.
“Everything, maxima?”
“Yes, dear, everything.”
“Well, I don’t.”
“Hush, you wicked boy! You
mustn’t talk so. What did your
papa ever say that you couldn't
believe?”
“You know that widow on the
next square who always looks so
sour at us boys?”
“You mean that pretty Mrs.
Bonton?”
“She’s the one. 1 heard papa
tell her yesterday that she was
the sweetest woman in town, and
then lie gave her a bunch of flow
ers; and it made me so ashamed
to hear him tell such a story that
I ran away and wouldn’t let linn
know that 1 had caught him in
it.”
“That will do, my child,” said
the mother, with a peculiar look
on her gentle face. “Run out and
play, and I will tell your father
when he comes in that he must be
particular not to destroy his son’s
confidence in Ins veracity."
A Dentist's Story.
This is the talc of a dentist. It
shows that the tooth carpenters
sometimes hare a kalsomine sort I
of romance in connection :
A yonng man and woman came
into my office the other day. Each
wanted a tooth polled. Every
tootii in each head was sound and
even.
“Which one?”
“A front one,” said the gent
I expostulated.
“I want it out” he persisted,
and I planked out a fine incissor.
“Now, take out the same sort
of tooth for me,” said the girl.
“I did it, and then, to my sur
prise, got an order to make each
tooth up with a gold plate. So
to day the younsr man is wearing
the girl's tooth in his jaw and she
is wearing his. He was going
sway for a year and she wanted a
novel way of remembering him.
She will take that tooth out every
da*', and she won't have a cause to
forget its former owner unless it
drops out and chokes her to
death.”
