The extreme diversity of the
papers is whal should slrike the

treat of high polities and of great

questions of disputed inheritance;
others again are the reports of

A Remarkable Story.
Philadelphia Record.
A rcm.akahlc story was told to
tlie reporter this morning by a
well known lawyer residing in this
city, and doing business here and
in New York. The lawyer lias
among his clients a eolored wo
man, who is in charge of a male
child of white parentage, now in
its la:It year. This child is tlie
heir lo a large estate, anil the law
yer sots tliat several attempts have
been made to get rid of it, and
that he believes that tlie murder
nf the boy lias been attempted.—
The story told by the colored wo
man, who is known as Cbariotlc
i’oto and lives in Bridge street, to
her lawyer, is in substance as fol
lows:
Fifteen years ago Charlotte Po
lo lived on the island of Cuba.—
Josephine B Pinto, a wealthy la
dy, came to Cuba, where she gave
birth to a child. Charlotte Polo
was the larly’3 nurse. The lady
seemed surrounded by a mystery
which the negress could not pene
irate. After a few days the child
was given into tiic custody of lilt-
nurse and the lady left Cuba.—
Prom time to lime Charlotte Polo
received sums of money for the
child’s support and maintenance,
lint suddenly the payments slop
ped. Then the nurse and child
came In America and Charlotte
found that Josephine B. Pinto was
living in a fashionable mansion on
Lexington avenue, New York —
Tlie nurse began an action to re
cover for her service to the boy
and got judgment against the lady
hy confession for $1,223. That
sum was paid over and the nurse
and child came lo Brooklyn to
live.
Josephine It. Pinto died in her
elegant home in ISS3, leaving
$300,000 behind her. The nurse
lie^pn another action against the
estate to recover for her services
and for the support of the lioy up
lo the time of beginning tbe suit.
The action is now on trial before
a referee in New York city. Now
comes the remarkable part of the
story.
Several limes when the boy has
iiccn playing outside his home on
Bridge street attempts have been
made by unknown parlies lo kid
nap him. On one occasion he was
spirited away and taken on board
an outgoing ship. At the last
inoment*he was rescuer! hy his
faithful nurse. The night before
last the boy was playing in the
street. Suddenly, his nurse says,
lie was struck on the head with
some blunt instrument ami severe
ly injured. He was carried home
and physicians summoned. One
doctor said the boy had bad a nar
row eseafie from death, and the
case ought to be reported lo the
police. Tlie authorities will prob
ably be notified of the assault to
day. The boy is said to be one oi
tiie heirs to tlie Pinto estate.

A Day’s Bar Basal Retard.
Atlanta Commonwealth.
Ten “drunk on tbe streets” cas
cs were maria by the police one
day last week. This is bnt a com
mon specimen of a day's bar room
work in this city, but wbat a lim
illessarca ol misery, shame, deg
radation and depravity these dai
ly occurrences illustrate! Add tn
these tbe numerous cases which
tlo not get into the clutches ol tbe
police, anti those which are quiet ly
hidden Crum public view daily by-
agonized wives and weeping chi!
tlren and pitying friends, and we
can easily imagine the picture of
woe and distress which the bar
rooms and llieir victims paint with
blood and shame daily in Atlanta.
Ami all this in spite of the rig
orous and unflinching fidelity with
which our excellent Recorder.
Judge Anderson, dispenses the
penalties of the law- against this
class of transgressors. For in
stance, here :s tlie record of one
day’s dealings, all against victims
of the bar rooms:
Don Tolon. wife beating, $20or

A few days ago a young man.

raleiffoit to commit suicide by
swallowing laudanum. Tbe ter
rible attempt was made at a bouse
of ill fame whose inmates succeed

fatal result. He was finally re
moved tn his home, a wrecked and
ruined man. Tlie ease did not
come under police cognizance.—
.Many of a like kind occur but arc
kept from public nolle?.
This is but a small fragment, a
day’s sample, so to speak, of the
degradation and ruin which “high
license” whisky and betrguzzling
is bringing upon the victims of
liar rooms since these pests have
been again opened and legalized
in the capital ot Georgia.
In tiie name of God, justice and

that this expectation does not
produce the agonizing terror
which most Europeans under tlie
circumstances would experience.
In the lime not very far distant,
when cannibalism prevailed in
New Zealand, it was occasionally,
at all events, the custom of a chief
when starting on a war expedition
to take with him, fastened togeth
er, a number of men whom he al
ready held as captives; these men
served as a living larder. Each
of them knew that his turn tn be
killed and eaten would come; nev
ertheless with the certainty of this
doom before him he partook of
each of bis fellows whose death
preceded his own; and Capt.
Wilkes, in bis account of his ex
ploring expedition, staled that

Every man imprisoned there knew
that he would ultimately serve as
a food for Ins majesty, and snch

Capt. Wilkes as to their feelings

it was quite proper that the king

Some lime ago, in my readings,
I learned of a lest made among
some lumber men in the far north.
One bad given an account, silling
around the camp fire, of how a
companion had committed snicide
in an ingenious way. He had ta
ken a board, probably six inches
wide, and, lying fiat, face down
ward, bad placed it upright under
his throat, then stretching bis
arms straight alongside bis liody,
had borne down with his neck.
Unconsciousness followed in a few
seconds, and he died an apparent
ly painless death. The story was
received by the lumbermen with
incredulity, and I suggested it be see?’
tried. One of tbe party volun
teered, and the arrangements were
made and carried out as 1 bad
mentioned in relating tbe suicide.
Tbe man bail remained in tlie po
sition only a very few seconds
when we hurriedly raised him and
let tbe plank fall. He was nncoo
scions, and it was some little time
before be responded to onr labor* 1
to revive him and opened hie eyes.
We were greatly relieved, 1 can
tell yon. In describing bis feel-
ings, he said be had experienced
a rash of blood to tbe bead and a
suffocating sensation, bnt wan

Dr. Mary Walker and tbe Small Bey,
St. Louis Republic.
Some of tlie pages at the cspf->
lol seem to take keen delight in
worrying Dr. Mary Walker when
she makes her appearance there.
The doctor is a terrible enemy of
tobacco smoke, and it makes hef
as mad as a wet ben when any
body smokes in her presence.. To-
day a page named Johnson, who
is a protege of Congressman
Amos Cummings, and who is not
in the habit of indulging in cig
arettes, procured one of these “boy
j killers” for the express purpose
of annoying Dr. Mary. She, or
“it,” as this eccentric person is
quite frequently called, was at the
house document room for the pur
pose of procuring several bills Sad
reports. The youngster with cig-
arrette in hand marched up tn
Dr. Mary and asked for a match.
The latter grew while with rage
and raised her umbrella to chas
tise the little fellow. Tbe boy
with squirrel-like agility sprang
up a sleep flight of steps leading
to the loft. When he bad reached
a safe distance he took a match
from his owd pocket and anon
had raised a cloud of smoke.
Dr. Mary abused him roundly
and said he was r. disgrace to kin
parents, and added that if she
coaid get bold of him she would
take the cigarette away. Tbe
boy, as he sat gazing at this fe
male crank attired in a man's
complete outfit, including a silk
hat, said:
“Now look here, Dr. -, didn't
you use to smoke when yon were a
boy?”
The youngster became bolder,
and in a moment or two descended
from bis place on tbe iron stairs
when the doctor seized the cigar
ette, threw it on the floor and
stamped iier bool heel on it. Then
she strutted off as if she bad ac
complished a great deed.
