Is My Beat

OBSERVATIONS IN
COVERING THE
NIGHT-BEAT: A case of
mistaken identity proved to be
a bit embarrassing to
pro due er-dire ctor-star
Raymond St. Jacques at the
Dallas location site of the
Joseph E. Levine and Brut
presentation of “Book of
Numbers,” an Avco Embassy
release.
The company was filming at
the historic Waxahatchie
Courthouse in Judge Roy Ed
Benson’s chambers when St.
Jacques asked a shortish, no
descript man in spectacles to
please move out of the
camera’s line of view. The little
man bristled, then informed St.
Jacques that he was, indeed,
Judge Benson and that the
“blasted movie company”
would leave before he did.
St. Jacques, ever the
diplomat, apoliogized and,
appealing to the ham in even
the most austere judiciary,
offered His Honor a part as a
spectator in the sequence
depicting St. Jacques’ trial on
gambling charges.
Rosanno Brazzi and Lena
Horne were recently table
neighbors at The King of the
Sea. He said: “You should play
over in Rome and Milan. You’d
be the big sensation among the
Italians.” He then toasted Lena
with Teacher’s Scotch to
celebrate a forthcoming
project.
Lovely recording star, Freda
Payne, who has three gold
records to her credit, may get
the chance to become a
princess. The lucky guy who
proposed to her is Prince
Hassen Durrani of Afghanistan.
The prince is in exile from his
own country and now lives in
New York.
If the monarchy returns to
power, Hassen will be King and
Freda will be his queen. “It’s
going to keep me busy thinking
about it,” she told me. In the
meantime, Freda is a very busy
gal with a movie career to
think about. She’s co-starred
with Raymond St. Jacques in
“Book of Numbers,” which has
just been released across the
country. As for the prince,
Freda has not given an answer
yet. But she said he’s her
number one man in her life at
present.

had a gourmet soul palate,
finally discovered escargots this
year. One taste and Flip
flipped over the delicate sea
creatures. By his own estimate:
“I have eaten more than 2,000
snails this year.” Peggy Lipton
(Mod Squad) and musician
Quincy Jones are in tune.
TV Newscaster Carl
Stokes-once mayor of
Cleveland, Ohio-and his wife of
15 years have split.
When you consider that he’s
doing deoderant commerials,
it’s hard to accept that report
that Muhammad Ali actually
refused to appear in the
all-black screen remake of
“Here Comes Mr. Jordan”
because it was contrary to his
Black Muslim religion.
The Don Mitchells (she’s
Judy Pace) expecting again.
Flip Wilson may indeed be
marrying Rosylin Taylor, as she
announced, but that isn’t
keeping him from dating
others occasionally. The latest
is Sheila Frazier of “Superfly
II”.
Actress Diahann Carroll’s
most convincing dramatic role
may have been the year-long
charade she played pretending
to be in love with TV
personality David Frost. The
fact that it was a performance
was obvious when Diahann
married Las Vegas businessman
Fred Glusman two weeks after
she broke her engagement to
the British star. The script was
as old as show business: Girl
loves boy A, but boy A doesn’t
respond, so she uses boy B to
make boy A jealous. And it
works all the time.
