FUN + LEARNING = EBONY JR!
Publisner John H. Johnson has announced April 26, 1973 as
the official publication date of EBONY JR!, an educational and
fun magazine for young black children “carefully selected
materials in EBONY JR! are designed to motivate reading
mastery at an early age,” says Johnson.
As the first national publication completely devoted to
speeding the learning of young black children, EBONY JR! is
expected to gain immediate acceptance in the juvenile field.
Publisher John H. Johnson
has announced April 26, 1973
as the official publication date
of EBONY JR!, an educational
and fun amgazine for black
children. “EBONY JR! is not a
younger version of EBONY,
but a new and completely
different magazine,” says
Johnson.
Carefully selected materials
in EBONY JR! are designed to
motivate reading mastery at an
early age. Training in
comprehension, vocabulary
building and perceptual
exercises are presented in the
magazine as a productive,
fun-and-learning package.

EBONY JR! is on reading
because today’s culture and
technology demand that
children become prepared for a
highly literate future.
Biographies of famous people,
stories, games, science projects,
puzzles, black history, and
other contents are all
child-centered and black
oriented.
A controlled vocabulary is
used in each story. Words that
may be new for the beginning
reader are set in bold type and
repeated at the bottom of the
page with a definition.
Games featured in EBONY
JR! stress the learning of
phonics as a reading skill and
are designed to build
sight-vocabulary. For young
readers who have their phonics
and sight-vocabulary under
control, EBONY JR! offers
games that take words
apart-showing them in their
structural and meaningful
prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
For comprehension, the real
“biggie” of reading skills,
EBONY JR! provides articles
that give children practice in
following directions or
understanding what they read
well enough to perform a given
task. Attacking reading
comprehension from yet
another angle, the magazine
features projects and skits that
deal with scientific matter.

I’m a slow learner and they

Counselor Janie
Washington told the

three percent of the Junior and
high school drop-outs return to
school from the Out-of-School
Neighborhood Youth Corps
program.
The Out-of-School
component of The
Neighborhood Youth Corps
began in April of 1971 for
school drop-outs. According to
officials of the program a
youngster has to be a drop-out
of at least three months and a
resident of Richmond County.
The official Said, “This is not
to encourage dropping out but
to work with drop-outs.”
