SPORT CAPSULE

With blacks appearing more
and more on he managerial
level in sports, one major
breakthrough remains -- sports
admin stration. This
breakthrough could occur on
the commissioner level,
especially in basketball, where
lawyer Simon Gourdine holds a
vice-presidential post under
59-year-old NBA commissioner
Walter Kennedy. Kennedy is
expected to decide soon as to
whether he will retire when his
contract expires in 1975. The
principal obstacle in
Gourdine’s way is his obscurity
due to having never been a
player.

If there ever was news that
an incoming pro-football
defensive line coach wanted to
hear, the Baltimore Colts’ Dick
Voris heard it recently when it
was announced that All-Pro
Defensive End Bubba Smith
had reconsidered and would be
playing for the Colts next
season. Smith, who tore knee
ligaments in an exhibition
game last year and missed the
entire season, was disgruntled
over new general manager Joe
Thomas’ housecleaning of
seven veterans, including
quarterback John Unitas. But
the 6-foot-8 veteran’s
rehabilitation has been
excellent and in six recent
meetings he has expressed a
difinite desire to play for the
Colts.
*****
In the latest sports chapter
of the rich getting richer, the
NCAA basketball champion
UCLA Bruins signed Portland,
Oregon’s Richard Washington,
at 7 feet tall considered to be
the best big man in high school
basketball. Washington is
expected to move right in
when junior center Bill Walton
graduates next year and to add
more national titles to the
seven straight already won by
the Bruins.
*****
F or former Princeton
basketball star Brian Taylor his
first year in the pros marked
the end of hardship which
caused him to pass up his
senior year to sign with the
ABA New York Mets. Not only
did the 6-foot-3 guard receive a
lot of money but he was
named ABA Rookie of the
Year by a two vote margin over
Jim Silas.
