PEAKS OUTNUMBER
VALLEYS FOR 1973
ATLANTA BRAVES
It was an eventful year for
the Atlanta Braves, to say the
least.
Hank Aaron provided the
key drama with a superb
season for any baseball player,
let alone one who is 39 years
old. Aaron hit 40 home runs
and now has 713 for his career,
one away from Babe Ruth’s
previoudy unapproachable
record.
Phil Niekro pitched the
National League’s only
no-hitter. The Braves became
the first team in history to
have three players with 40 or
more homers (Dave Johnson
hit 43 and Darrell Evans 41).
Carl Morton developed into the
Braves’ big winner and ended
the season with four straight
complete games. Atlanta led
the major leagues in nearly
every offensive category. After
a slow start the Braves enjoyed
a very respectable won-loss
showing over the last couple of
months.
But, when you finish fifth as
the Braves did, there are some
areas that could stand
improvement. The Braves’
defense and pitching
admittedly were not always up
to par.
“Our pitching staff took a
lot of abuse," manager Eddie
Mathews said, “but it’s tough
on the pitchers when you lead
the league in errors. I admit we
need help in the bullpen, but,
overall, our staff is not that
bad. And, offensively, we did a
good job. I still feel we had a
better team than our record.
We have to be better next
year.”
Mathews believes the Braves
already have the nucleus of a
good pitching staff in Carl

Wilt "The Stilt” Demeans Black
Women, Prefers Whites; Blasted
By Thilly’ NAACP
Wilt Chamberlain has joined
the ranks of male pig
chauvanism, along with his
shorter, equally obnoxious
Caucasian counterpart, Bobby
Riggs. And both got their
comeuppance recently. Riggs
got his on the tennis courts as
he was demolished by Ms.
Billie Jean King, and
Chamberlain got his verbally,
only from another man. Their
verbal attack on Chamberlain
came as the result of
Chamberlains’ recent
comments detailing his
preferance for white women.
Alfonso Deal, a
Philadelphia police officer, and
president of the North
Philadelphia NAACP, said in a
letter to the press, “It is
unfortunate that a person of
(Chamberlain’s) stature would
do such a disservice to the
image of Black women. But for
the high price paid by them,
we as a race would not today
enjoy the meager crumbs
allotted us from the table of
democracy...
“With all (his fame), wealth
and big house, he seems to be
immature, insecure and
frightened that (he) will not be
acceptable to the white
community unless (he)
demeans our beautiful strong
Black women. I hope and pray
that Chamberlain’s mother and
sisters have not read the
statements attributed to him.
In fact,” he wrote to the
basketball player, “If you no
longer like our beautiful Black,
strong and compatible women,
I have only sympathy for you
and a little advice for you. You
should use a little more soap
and water, some of the Brut
you advertise, good manners
and less ego-tripping. And then
Morton, Roric Harrison, Ron
Schueler, Phil Niekro and Gary
Gentry and Ron Reed, both of
whom were injured much of
1973.
To review the
accomplishments of this past
season-Aaron, in a word, was
remarkable. On June 21 he was
batting .219; he hit .369 the
rest of the way to finish at
.301. He drove in 96 runs in
just 392 at bats. Aaron’s
slugging percentage was .43, his
second highest ever and among
the best in baseball this season.
Aaron set a major league
standard for career extra base
hits (1,393) and extended
hiscountless other records.
Johnson, who never before
had hit more than 18 homers,
snapped Rogers hornsby’s
51-year-old mark for home
runs by a second baseman.
Evans matured into a bona fide
star with his 104 RBIs and 114
runs, in addition to his home
run output. Niekro baffled the
San Diego Padres, 9-0, on Aug.
5 for the first no-hitter of his
career Morton would up with a
15-10 record and had two
shutouts in his last four starts.
All in all, then, there was
much more good than bad in
the Braves’ 1973 season.
Hopefully, 1974 will hold even
more of the same.

remember, it’s all right to play
white, but just don’t foiget
from whence you came.”
Chamberlain, in a book
written in collaboration with
another sportswriter, who is
allegedly white, claimed that
Black women lack education
and sophistication and are not
serious contenders for his
affections-a statement that has
led several local lasses, to ask
“What’s the big deal about
‘contending’ for the bearded
giant’s affections in the first
place?”
Chamberlain further stated
that Black women are sexually
repressed and “unable to fully
respond to a man” because
they have been brought up in
poverty which in turn forced
them to live in crowded rooms
where they learned that sex
was something ugly.
Defection from Blackness is
nothing new for Chamberlain
who was one of President
Richard M. Nixon’s big
supporters in the president’s
shameful 1972 campaign for
re-election.
In addition to the insulting
remarks made about Black
women, Chamberlain has also
outlined some rather amusing
attributes of his which,
according to his curious value
system justifies his evaluation
of Black women. He has said,
in part, “I have a good
education, I have traveled and
I’ve become a knowledgeable
businessman. I have learned to
appreciate good food and art.”
The above claims are best
substantiated by the fact that
he spent a year and a half at
the University of Kansas,
where basketweaving was one
of the courses available to
outstanding athletic
performers. And he has
traveled with the Harlem
Globetrotters and various NBA
teams, but athletic schedules
are notorious for the fact that
they leave little time for visits
to local musuems.
Chamberlain’s unfortunate
comments are not likely to win
him any new friends on either
side of the color or sex line in
Los Angeles where he plays for
the L.A. Lakers. Too bad he
didn’t think about his racist
slur before it fell out of his big
mouth.

For The Remainder of the Month:
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) - A very ambitious person may try
to persuade you to enter a financial scheme. Have none of this
and make it clear enough that such a matter will not come up in
the future. Keep your money situation a personal matter and
trust only a loved one about it.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) - You may spend these days in
attempting to come to a decision which involves quite a lot of
money and has an effect on your standing in the community.
You will undoubtedly be right to go ahead in a positive,
charitable fashion.
GEMINI (May 21 • June 21) - You can be bored with work and
home life both. If you quit on either it can be a long time before
you meet with a situation equally good to what you have now .
Stick it out and discard all selfish, childish and expensive ideas
immediately.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22) - Be thoughtful when giving
something to a neighbor and guard your valuable possessions. A
preoccupied air now can cause you some regret should there be
any breakage as result. You may find someone becoming serious
about marriage possibilities this cycle.
LEO (July 23 - August 23) - You will be in a state of growth
where understanding for people is concerned, and tolerance will
increase. Dutiful action connected with a person who has
befriended you must not be undertaken with a grim visage..
VIRGO (August 24 - September 22) - You could slip from the
tracks during this cycle, go to unwise excess and bring some
trouble upon yourself from lack of promptness or excellence in
work. Try to just go along in routine fashion without resenting
the fact that you are quite tied down.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) - Do not find fault with the
appearance of a lifemate or romantic companion. Be patient
about seeing your own tastes carried out. Love may seem
inseparable from a willingness to be groomed as you like and to
dress as you like where your loved one is concerned. Avoid too
much stress on this.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 22) - If you undertake a new
responsibility, you may be sorry before the year is over. Be sure
to call an elderly friend before the month is over. Let lonely
Seople know you are thinking of them and show willingness to
evote time to those who need you. Give you some personal
pursuits for time being to be dutiful instead.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) - A peculiar brief
dream you have can be humorous. Your insight and powers of
self-analysis are heightened. Talk with a friend may help to
explain to yourself some of the inner trends over which you are
puzzling. A very interesting time for the occult.
CAPRICORN (November 22 - January 20) - Accept a special
invitation, be at your best in diplomacy and yet be very honest
and straightforward in speech. You will make a friend who falls
under the spell of your rather enigmatic personality and
practicality of speech in general.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) - You will be well
impressed by someone who stops in casually to talk with you and
this can set the trend for a future set of circumstances that will
make quite a few people happy.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20) - Your appreciation of a unique
situation makes you happy and cheers other on to larger efforts
to bring happiness. Keep busy carving out your world and see
how destiny has been bringing you all along just what you want.
